Wireless sensing and control has never been easier...
Welcome to the March edition of Jennic's customer newsletter. In this issue, we'll tell you about the latest developments from Jennic that will improve your time to market and cost of development for your latest IEEE802.15.4/ZigBee based product designs.

Our wireless microcontroller modules are aimed at helping you develop wireless networks, whether it is for monitoring and control of environments in the home, office or in industry. We provide both the technology and the full on-line developer support to get your network up and running.

We have a comprehensive solution to enable your next wireless sensor network design based on the IEEE802.15.4/ZigBee standards.
locostmodule
Cost is usually a key driver in the design of electronics based systems and ZigBee products are no exception. Whilst large sums can be saved in installation costs by using wireless sensors in place of wired ones, the costs of the wireless nodes still contribute heavily to the final choice of system.

To meet these stringent cost requirements, Jennic has developed an ultra low cost wireless microcontroller reference design for our JN5139 chip products, with a total BOM cost of less than $5. This enables manufacturers to implement all the microcontroller and radio related functions of their system at the lowest possible price whilst also achieving excellent radio performance. In achieving this reference design, we have taken into account both the main radio performance parameters of transmit power and receive sensitivity, as well as the issues to be found when introducing a product into production, including spurious emissions.

evalkit
January 2007 saw the launch of Jennic’s second generation wireless microcontrollers, the JN513x family – raising the stakes not just in the performance of single chip solutions for IEEE802.15.4 and ZigBee applications, but also creating a series of low cost price points that make this technology a compelling choice to even the most cost-sensitive of applications.

Supporting the launch is a range of IEEE802.15.4 and ZigBee evaluation kits based on the JN5139 wireless microcontroller, containing all of the software tools and hardware components required to allow developers to rapidly evaluate the technology and to develop products.

module
Jennic's JN5139 wireless microcontroller modules now pass all regulatory approvals in the USA and Europe, with full certification for FCC and ETSI now received. This means system manufacturers implementing Jennic’s modules in IEEE802.15.4 and ZigBee applications can save weeks of time and costs in performing the RF regulatory testing, resulting in products being commissioned quicker.

In the USA, a modular approvals certificate is available, stating that an end product which incorporates an approved module does not need to perform RF tests again to receive FCC certification for the end product. In Europe, a test report is available stating that the modules comply with ETSI standard ETS 300 328, which can then be used as part of the technical construction file to demonstrate compliance with the radio sections of European EMC regulations.

Visit us at the Embedded Systems Conference (ESC) on the ZigBee Pavilion (booth number 6025). For more information about the event, click here

Running in conjunction with the Embedded Systems Conference is the ZigBee Developers Conference, where several Jennic papers are being presented.

Jennic’s Robert Cragie is presenting a paper entitled, “ZigBee Security Specification Overview” on Tuesday, April 3rd at 1:30pm. Details here

Girish Apte is presenting a paper entitled "ZigBee Systems for Environmental Monitoring in Historic Buildings - a Case Study" on Tuesday April 3rd at 5.30pm. Details here

SPYMAC PAYS OUT ANOTHER $100,000 TO UPLOADERS – BEATS YOUTUBE

- Comedian Wes Borg uses Spymac.com to Earn Money from his Videos and Starts Monthly Short Film Contest

Spymac today announced it has paid out nearly a quarter of a million dollars to uploaders who contributed original pictures, videos and music to their new international Web 2.0 media portal located at www.spymac.com. Canadian Comedian Wes Borg is one of many celebrities who have announced their support of the innovative new site.

With a 20-year live performance career, Wes loves doing live shows but, like other comedians, needs additional channels to reach a broader audience in order to make a living. After first recording and publishing his shows online at deadtroll.com, he soon realized that the web generally works completely opposite of the real world in terms of earning money for popular content. Although his videos became popular and were viewed by many users, the online portal owners were the only ones making a profit.

“I won’t put my stuff on sites that don’t share the money they make of my content,” Wes said. “It’s not fair to make millions off other people’s creativity without sharing. So I started looking for a site on which you can earn money if you have quality content. Most portals are full of content people copy from somewhere else, and amateur videos like granny falling off a chair at a party, which is fine. But comedy is my art form and being a professional I work hard at it. So it was wonderful to find Spymac - they truly reward creative original content.”

With Spymac’s revenue-sharing model, the most active, creative and popular content providers earn the largest amounts of money. The dividend payout-system is based on an exponential curve similar to lottery payout-systems: the daily and monthly winners receive the lion’s share, the next best content providers earn a sizable amount of money, and the rest earn smaller payouts. In the first month, Spymac’s most popular uploaders received approximately $5,000. The payouts continue to grow along with user numbers and the related advertising income. In its first two months of launching its new site, Spymac has paid out almost a quarter of a million dollars.

After uploading his content to Spymac.com, Wes started earning money based on the unique revenue-sharing model, and was also booked to perform on events in the United States, Canada and even Europe. He recently launched a short film contest called “Metro TV” that’s a cross between a film festival and a raucous “idol-Style” talent show. The best short films are shown on the big screen at Metro Cinema in Edmonton, Alberta and of course worldwide on www.Spymac.com .

”Spymac feels like a community of cool people,” said Wes. “It’s the interaction of people with similar mindsets, tastes and interests that result in a very exiting  creative exchange which is why Social Networking communities are so popular today.”

“We’ve designed Spymac to be completely impulse-driven,” explained Kevin April, Co-founder of Spymac. “Our members spend hours browsing the site because once they find something they’re interested in, they’re presented with links to videos, music and other members that we know they’ll like. It’s like channel-surfing, only better.”

Versatile recording tool delivers premium large capsule sound and performance

El Segundo, CA… MXL Microphones, the professional audio division of Marshall Electronics, is pleased to announce that the MXL 190 cardioid condenser microphone is now shipping and available exclusively through Musicians Friend (www.musiciansfriend.com). Featuring low-noise FET design, balanced transformer coupled output, and Mogami wiring, the new 190 is a premium cardioid condenser microphone that is priced well within reach of the home and project studio recordist.

The MXL 190 is well suited to capture everything from the airy tones of the piccolo to the slap of the bass guitar—making it an exceptional choice for a wide range of recording application, thanks to a frequency response of 20 Hz-20 kHz. The microphone’s custom chamber has been tuned to complement the capsule's response, delivering an open, airy sound that is transparent without being overly bright.

To ensure studio quality performance, the versatile MXL 190 uses a six micron condenser pressure gradient capsule and features a low-noise FET (field-effect transistor) preamp with balanced transformer coupled output. Contributing further to its pristine audio quality is the fact that this microphone is internally wired with Mogami cable—the choice of recording professionals everywhere.

The MXL 190 utilizes a six micron condenser pressure gradient capsule with a cardioid polar pattern—enabling the microphone to be extremely versatile for a multitude of recording tasks. To help make level matching easy, the 190 incorporates a 0/-10dB attenuation switch—making it a snap to adapt to any signal source.

MXL’s new 190 cardioid condenser microphone has a champagne colored finish and ships in a protective metal case. Adding still greater value to the package is the inclusion of a hi-isolation shockmout—enabling the microphone to be isolated from floor vibrations and the resulting noise.

Wayne Freeman, MXL’s Director of Sales and Marketing, commented on the new 190, “The new 190 microphone is remarkably versatile recording tool for home and project studio recordists. The microphone offers superior electronics and is fully wired with Mogami cable. Simply put, it delivers tremendous bang for the buck.”

The MXL 190 cardioid condenser microphone carries a street price of $149.99 and is available now at Musicians Friend.

Give Your iPod a Longer Life

Fort Collins, COLO—Since the introduction of the iPod® in 2001, Apple® has ruled the MP3 market. Last quarter, sales reached 21 million, boosting revenues by 50 percent. For iPod lovers, the concept of “taking your music anywhere” is revolutionary. However in reality, most iPods cannot withstand elements of daily life—water, dust, dirt and drops.

The most popular reason for broken iPods, especially in newer models, is broken LCD screens. Some are sensitive enough that sweat and humidity can break the unit.

So What do you do if your iPod breaks?

If searching Google™ for “iPod Repair” or “Broken iPods,” you will find around 3 million related sites. Repair prices vary depending on the model and parts. LCD screens range $35-119, harddrives $70 to almost $200 and batteries another $26-89. Damaged faceplates range $69-79. In many cases, this doesn’t include shipping and professional installation. Bottom line, repairing or replacing an iPod is not cheap.

Why not add rugged protection from the beginning?

When you add up the cost of your iPod, songs, photos and videos, it’s scary to think you could lose your entire investment with wrong move. Otter Products, LLC., located in Fort Collins, Colo., offers a sort of “iPod insurance” with OtterBox for iPod case line. These rugged, interactive cases are waterproof, dust-proof, dirt-proof and drop-resistant. Cases add protection and longevity at a fraction of repair costs.

With an OtterBox for iPod, users can go hiking, biking, rock-climbing or even swimming without ruining their device. Cases available for the iPod nano (1st and 2nd generation), video, photo, mini, 20GB, and shuffle (1st generation).

The OtterBox for iPod mini, 20GB, photo, nano (1st and 2nd generation) and video enable user interaction with the iPod Click Wheel through a clear membrane on the front of the case. A hard screen cover shields the display and offers drop-protection and screen visibility. An included belt clip allows hands-free carrying and integrated headphone cable management. For more flexibility, an armband is available.

Slightly different, the OtterBox for iPod shuffle 1st generation enables iPod control access through a flexible, rubber button on the front. On the back, a clear window offers visibility of the on/off switch and a rubber button for battery check access. The case also includes a removable neck lanyard. Optional armband available.

Otter Products, LLC. offers a complete line of rugged cases for PDAs, Palm® Treo™, RIM Blackberry®, notebooks, Tablet PCs, cigars, Zippo lighters and other valuables. For more information call 888-695-8820 or visit http://www.otterbox.com.

Adverse Effects of Materialism on Youth Lessened With an Attitude of Thankfulness and Gratitude

Researchers at Harris Interactive recently collaborated with several marketing professors to provide a more accurate portrait of materialistic youth by examining the role of thankfulness in offsetting the negative social effects of materialism. The results determined that increasing materialism among youth does not immediately translate into less generous behavior; rather, gratitude plays an important role in influencing their level of generosity.

The research shows that youth (ages 8 to 18) who are more likely to be materialistic are less likely to be generous. Those who are materialistic but not thankful or appreciative for the things they have are more likely to not display generosity.

Responses regarding "buying things" indicate:

bullet76% of tweens (ages 8 to 12) and 62% of teens (ages 13 to 18) say they really enjoy going shopping
bullet71% overall say they would be happier if they had more money to buy more things for themselves
bullet51% of tweens and 48% of teens say that when they grow up, they'll be happier if they have more money

Happiness is defined differently by teens and tweens:

Much of the teen focus is on technology, such as

bulletCD's (67%)
bullettheir own cell phone (65%)
bullettheir own computer (63%)
bulletmoney (74%)

Tweens are most likely to say

bulletmoney (65%)
bulletpresents (63%)
bullethaving popular video/computer games (60%)
bullettheir own computer (57%)

Mom is still an important figure in the lives of both tweens and teens, as majorities (91% of tweens and 77% of teens) say that Mom makes them happy. Overall, Friends (85%), Grandma (69%), Dad (67%) and pets (58%) round out the top five of those people and pets that make youth happy.

Although youth seem focused on money and possessions, they also enjoy helping others and are appreciative of the things and people in their lives, says the report. They:

bulletLike to help new kids at school (91% of tweens, 81% of teens)
bulletRaise money for needy people (86% of tweens, 79% of teens)
bulletSpend time helping others (83% of tweens, 81% of teens)
bulletShare their favorite things with other people (81% of tweens, 75% of teens)
bulletDo favors for friends or family even when they're busy (77% of tweens, 75% of teens).
bulletHave a lot to be thankful for (Tweens:92% vs. Teens: 86%)
bulletCan think of a lot of people who have helped them (81%)

Aric Rindfleisch, Associate Professor of Marketing at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, summarizes the findings by saying "... although parents may be able to do little to squelch materialistic messages, they may be able limit the adverse effects of materialism by cultivating a sense of thankfulness and gratitude in their children

DIGITAL FOCI “IMAGE MOMENTS” WINS 2007 HOT ONE AWARD

“Image Moments” Digital Frame Honored by Professional Photographer magazine for Advanced Technology, Innovation & Superior Usability

Digital Foci, Inc. (www.digitalfoci.com) announced today that it has won The Professional Photographer 2007 Hot One Awards for their “Image Moments” digital photo frame.  “Image Moments” (Model IMT-081) lets you display and share photos directly from digital camera memory cards at home or at the office on a selection of beautiful interchangeable picture frames.  “Image Moments,” also featured in Time Magazine’s “Person of the Year” December 25, 2006 - January 1, 2007 issue (http://www.thomas-pr.com/136/photos/digitalfociintimemagazine2.html), lets photographers and consumers alike insert any digital camera card into the frame’s sharp, vibrant color big 8-inch high-resolution digital LCD screen to bring memories instantly to life.

“Our team of judges chose this year’s crop of winners based on quality, usability, innovation and, in many cases, value for price.  These judges are all working professional photographers, and their endorsement of these products indicates that the items work not only on the conceptual level, but on the practical level as well. The 2007 Hot One Award winners can be proud to call themselves the best the business has to offer,” said Jeff Kent, Hot One Editor, Professional Photographer magazine.

The prestigious Hot One Award honors the photography industry’s best new products for professional application. The mission of the award is to provide Professional Photographer magazine’s readership with a compendium of the newest, hottest, most innovative products available.  Each year, Professional Photographer editors oversee a submission and judging process that calls on companies in all subfields of the photography industry. This year, more than 125 companies competed in just shy of 50 product categories. There were well over 200 total products entered in the contest.

Hot One Award Judging Process

For the 2007 Hot One Awards, a team of 15 judges, all of whom are practicing professional photographers, voted on products that ranged from picture frames to posing tools. The judges were asked to vote only on categories that fit within their areas of expertise. For example, some judges voted on digital cameras, software and lighting equipment. Others voted on film, paper and presentation devices. By conducting the judging in this manner, Professional Photographer was able to provide a premium level of expertise for the judging of each category.

Winners were chosen by a plurality of votes in each category. The 2007 Hot One Award winners will be highlighted at Imaging USA in San Antonio, Texas, January 14-17, 2007. There will also be a special Hot One Awards magazine write-up appearing in the February issue of Professional Photographer. All winning products will be detailed in that article. Additional information on the Hot One Awards and the 2007 winners will appear on Professional Photographer’s website: www.ppmag.com.

VDS DELIVERS HIGH-DEF TICKER SYSTEM TO MSG NETWORK

MELVILLE, NY, January 12, 2007—VDS, a leading developer of broadcast automation software, content design and plug-in products has delivered a high-definition, lower-third ticker system to MSG Network.

Launched with the start of the NHL season, the ticker system provided by VDS is dynamically used to display live scores, stats, league and team news, network promos, sponsors and other information on the MSG Network on a 24 x 7, year-round schedule. Scores and statistical data for the ticker system are being provided by PA SportsTicker (www.pa-sportsticker.com). All data is being processed by the VDS Gametrak Client/Server system and stored in the Sportbase central database developed by VDS to support clients throughout the sports broadcast industry.

The ticker system features multiple operational modes, including a standard, lower-third format, as well as a special “live event” mode, during which the size of the ticker is reduced to provide maximum screen real estate for live, HD game coverage of New York Knicks and New York Rangers games, as well as other MSG Network events.

A key requirement for MSG Network was the ability to remotely create playlists of data to be displayed in the ticker. Using the VDS Authoring tool, complete ticker playlists can be scheduled from MSG’s facilities in New York City, for immediate or future playout at MSG’s uplink facility at Rainbow Network Communications (www.rncnetwork.com) in Bethpage, NY. Scores and stats information are updated live as the playlists are displayed on-air.

“We’re pleased to be continuing our relationship with MSG Network. With the delivery of our native HD ticker system, MSG will be able enhance the viewing experience with the display of up-to-the-minute scores and information, in the highest possible graphics quality ”, said Larry Mincer, President of VDS.

Towerswitch Introduces New  "Talking Alert!™" Audio Device To

Reduce Workplace Accidents and Employer Liability

- Towerswitch LLC, an award-winning engineering firm based in Deerfield Beach, FL, has introduced Talking Alert!™ a new digital audio device designed to dramatically reduce accidents in the workplace via automatically triggered loud, audio safety messages and emergency alerts. Based upon a product initially launched to prevent mishaps by telecommunications workers climbing tall broadcast towers, the device now addresses the safety concerns of a broad cross-section of applications such as cell phone towers, industrial plants, public venues, refineries, water and electric utilities, oil and gas pipelines, fuel storage tanks, mining operations, and hazardous waste sites. The original concept was acknowledged for innovation by Radio Magazine as one of only 15 "Pick Hits" awarded at the 2006 National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) convention in Las Vegas, NV.

Packaged in a customized, compact (8”H x 6”W x 3”D) self-contained weatherproof housing, the solar-powered Talking Alert! delivers up to 10 minutes of customized audio messages in any language by simply pressing the Information Button. The Emergency Button immediately notifies staff and security.

Using a built-in microphone jack, messages can be recorded, erased and re-recorded. Audio playback is initiated by pressing one of the front panel buttons, or by triggering an external input, such as an optional motion detector or magnetic contact on the door leading out to the antenna rooftop.  A special magnetic contact is available for tower elevator applications.  An on-board relay can also be set to notify security, or set off alarms. The solar power feature has battery backup for redundancy, or it can be powered by AC electricity.  A built-in Datalogger automatically records activations to verify scheduled maintenance and inspections, or site visits can be logged manually with a watch-key. Data is downloaded directly from the unit to a laptop or PDA.  An economy model of the Talking Alert! without the Datalogger – “Talking Alert! Mini” - will soon be available.

“Talking Alert! has already received rave reviews from industrial safety experts who view it as an effective means to prevent workplace injuries and fatalities by providing timely alerts as well as its capability to monitor visitors,” states Gary Minker, Managing Partner and co-designer.  “In addition, the device gives organizations leverage when negotiating attractive liability rates.”

Talking Alert! conforms with OSHA-mandated hazard communications standards, and because of the unit’s potential to dramatically lower employer liability, major insurance carriers are considering Talking Alert! for safety-related discounts.

Towerswitch also offers several other Talking Alert! models, accessories and software programs geared for specific industrial applications such as RF (Radio Frequency) compliance for FCC and OSHA requirements for broadcast and cellular antenna towers. The Company’s Talking Diamond™ targets chemical and HazMat safety by delivering on-site custom audio information for MSDS (Material Data Safety Sheets), and NFPA (National Fire Protection Association) standards.

Towerswitch products are available directly from the company, or through distributors.  Visit  www.TowerSwitch.com for contact information.

JADOO POWER N-GEN NAMED PRODUCT OF THE YEAR
BY ELECTRONIC PRODUCTS MAGAZINE

N-Gen Garners Award for Innovative Advancements in Fuel Cell Design

December 27, 2006 – Jadoo Power Systems Inc. (Jadoo) www.jadoopower.com, the leading supplier of portable fuel cell systems, announced today it was honored with an Electronic Products’ Product of the Year Award for its N-Gen Fuel Cell Power Unit.  The Jadoo N-Gen is an easy to use fuel cell system generating 100W and 12VDC of clean fuel cell energy.  Power support is critical when grid power is either unavailable or unreliable and many applications, including portable radio and laptop battery recharging, law enforcement surveillance installations, critical off-grid communications devices like satellite phones, walkie talkies, modems and network repeaters, can take advantage of the features of the N-Gen.

Utilizing the company’s patented N-Stor Fuel Canisters, the N-Gen power unit has multiple fuel runtime options.  For example, using Jadoo’s N-Stor360 can provide 360W-h (30A-h) of predictable continuous runtime.  There is no degradation or memory effect as exists with a standard battery.  When used with the company’s award winning XRT product, upwards of 2200W-h (180A-h) of runtime and 110VAC support can be achieved.

“Fuel cells show great promise in driving devices off-grid without the environmental, bulk, or weight penalties of batteries and generators, but required design-in for their particular application. The N-Gen Fuel Cell Power Unit is the first prosumer fuel cell system, with industry-standard battery connectors for easy integration into consumer devices,” said Alix Paultre, Executive Editor, Electronic Products Magazine.  “These power systems use 130 and 360W-h fuel cartridges with onboard intelligence to provide accurate state-of-fill information for ease of use and predictable operation.”

The editors of Electronic Products, a leading trade publication for electronic design engineers, evaluated thousands of products launched in 2006 on the basis of innovative design, significant advancement in technology or application and substantial achievement in price and performance.  The 2006 Product of the Year Awards will be announced in the January 2007 issue of Electronic Products with a cover feature and a brief description of each product.   2006 marks the 31st anniversary of Electronic Products’ “Product of the Year” Awards, which began recognizing the best products in the industry in 1977.

“We are honored to be chosen by the editors of Electronic Products Magazine for this prestigious award,” said Jack Peterson, VP of Sales and Marketing at Jadoo.  “Our team has worked hard to deliver the highest quality, best value fuel cell products available today.  Providing critical power support for emergency preparedness, law enforcement, and other off-grid applications is our company mission and to be recognized for these efforts is outstanding.”

 HAPPY BIRTHDAY, Pokemon!
Pokemon Fever Starting to Reach Retailers

mime star It was ten years ago that a Japanese guy named Satoshi Tajiri created a world of creatures led by a little yellow guy that took Japan by storm. It took 2 more years before the storm hit our part of the world, but when it did, it hit HARD! Today, Pokemon is a global pop culture phenom that shows no signs of stopping!

For example...did you know....that Pokemon is the #1 show for Boys ages 6 - 11, and is shown seven days a week on Cartoon Network? Or, that there will be over 100 toy items released on January 1st, with retailers like Target and Walmart giving Pokemon at least 2 feet in shelf space. Or, that Nintendo will release 2 new video games (Pokemon Diamond and Pokemon Pearl) in Spring 2007, and that, when these same games were released in Japan in 2006, they sold 1,586,360 units in just four days (and, consequently, demolished the previous record of 865,024 units of Super Mario Bros. sold in a week!) Or, that sales of the Pokemon Trading Card Game are expected to be up by +100% over 2005 sales...Or, finally, did you know that all of this great stuff going on with Pokemon will be supported by a multi- million dollar marketing and advertsing campaign starting in Q1 of 2007...?! Whew...That's a lot of Pokemon excitement!

Ah yes....but how does this all relate to Brand Old, you ask...?? Well, given that this brand is so well loved, and is showing signs of longevity, it is fully expected that Pokemon will be a leading children's property that is popular for generations to come. Everyone - parents and kids - seems to have a favorite character, whether it be Pikachu, Bulbasaur, Sandsquash, or Pidgey...just to name a few...And wearing a Pokemon t-shirt allows parents to share a special connection with their kids. Plus, the Pokemon characters just look so darn cute on our t-shirts!

Be sure to look for our new Pokemon designs on the brand old website, at www.brandoldonline.com!

 More Pokemon Fun Facts

It can take months to complete an entire Pokemon computer game. In 2004, Forbes magazine named Pikachu, the most popular Pokemon, among the "Top 10 Earning Fictional Characters" with an estimated net worth of $825 million. Pikachu has appeared in the annual Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade every year since 2001. « One of the most prominent Canadian designers of his generation, Andy Thê-Anh made his mark with the POW label in 2001. Four years later, with Athêlia, his new financial backer and manufacturer, Andy launched his new label, simply called ANDY by Andy Thê-Anh. Andy has been serving up very trendy and ultra-feminine styles for the modern career oriented woman exuding refinement and glamour. Andy is especially known for his impeccable suits, his ultra-feminine blouses and his drop-dead gorgeous dresses. Spring 2007 will also see the first ANDY belt collection, produced in Canada.

Born in Vietnam, Andy came to Canada in 1981 and studied fashion at LaSalle College after finishing a degree in science. Over the years, he has won several fashion awards.Through the years, he has dressed some of the most admired Canadian stars. More recently, Jerry Hall and Molly Ringwald have bought pieces from his collection while staying in Toronto. His clothes have also drawn the attention of a new generation of Canadian socialites, ladies such as Sophie Grégroire, wife of Justin Trudeau, son of Canada’s former Prime Minister.

Romanticism, femininity, mystery and strength are the words that best describe Desperately Different , a clothing line masterfully designed by Ukrainian born fashion designer, Katya Revenko. Motivated by all different types of strong intelligent women, the main focus behind each collection is to establish a mold for the ever evolving woman, and to create clothes that evoke a certain effortlessness and feeling of relaxed, everyday luxury.

Revenko who immigrated to Canada in 2002 from Ukraine, After two years in Toronto to establish her own clothing line and within the line’s first season, Desperately Different was picked up immediately by Holt Renfrew and featured in the World Design Lab. Revenko won Elle Canada New Labels Fashion Award First Prize in March 2006.

Her collection is timed perfectly to capture the mood for fall/winter 2006. "It's rich and romantically melancholic," said Elle Canada's editor-in-chief Rita Silvan, her retro-modern silhouettes inspired by historic femme-fatales like Joan of Arc and Josephine Bonaparte. "The colour palette -- rich burgundies, emeralds -- has a grownup glamour, for women who like classic, elegant fashion with an edge," she added. Read full article

NEXTFEST

Virgin Galatic team photograph Virgin Galactic was the main attraction at Wired Magazine's NextFest annual technology and innovations exhibition which was held in New York from the 29th September to the 1st October. In all, over a hundred individual exhibitors presented unique inventions, prototypes, designs and interactive experiences.

Conceptual Interior of SS2 Revealed to the World's Press!

Front of SS2 and conceptual interior of SS2During the exhibition, Virgin founder, Sir Richard Branson unveiled the conceptual interior of SpaceShipTwo to the world's press in a blaze of media coverage. Virgin Galactic exclusively showcased its first representative mock-up of the astronaut interior of SpaceShipTwo (SS2), while an exact replica of SpaceShipOne (SS1) hung directly overhead.

The mock-up gave some indication of the scale of SS2 which will be around three times larger than SS1. Its carrier aircraft WhiteKnightTwo (WK2) will be larger than a Boeing 757.

Designed by Seymour Powell, leading British product designers, the conceptual interior featured six astronaut seats with two pilot's seats forward of the bulkhead. Seating in SS2 will uniquely allow the astronauts a comfortable ride into space and back, utilising cutting edge design, including fully reclining seats to minimise the impact of G force on the body. This design will also allow our astronauts to leave their seats and enjoy their period of weightlessness. Amazing views of our blue planet will be enabled by large windows strategically placed all around the cabin including the floor.

Let the Journey Begin........
Virgin Galatic experience animation Press conference
A packed press conference listened to presentations by Will Whitehorn (Virgin Galactic President) and Stephen Attenborough (Virgin Galactic's Head of Astronaut Relations) and watched an impressive new animation which gave an insight into the Virgin Galactic 'experience'.

Sir Richard Branson commented: "This is an exciting day. Construction of SS2 is underway at Burt Rutan's factory in Mojave California and this is the first opportunity for the public to get a sneak preview of the sheer scale of what is under construction there. Some of our pioneering astronauts are here with us in New York today to share in the excitement."

Virgin Atlantic Frequent Flyer Trades Air Miles for Space Ticket
Richard Branson and Alan Watts
Amongst the Pioneers present was Virgin Atlantic Airways customer Alan Watts, who joined Richard on stage as the first Virgin Atlantic Flying Club member to trade 2 million Frequent Flyer miles for a Virgin Galactic Space Ticket.

Take off from around the world!
Will Whitehorn, President of Virgin GalacticWill Whitehorn, President of Virgin Galactic added: "Although not visible in today's mock-up there has been considerable technological development in the design of SpaceShipTwo and its carrier aircraft WhiteKnightTwo. One of the exciting features of the new system will be the ability to transport it globally from its home base in New Mexico to any location in the world where we get permission to operate. Discussions are already underway in several countries including the UK, Sweden and Australia."

Richard, Will and Stephen then answered many questions from the journalists before Richard officially opened NextFest along with Mayor Bloomberg and the most recent NASA shuttle astronauts.

Buzz Aldrin and Founders Richard Branson and VIPs The Virgin Galactic team hosted a private drinks reception for many of our customers and various VIP's including Buzz Aldrin, Brian Binnie, Philippe Starck and Governor Pataki, in front of the SS2 mock-up and SS1 replica.

Head of Astronaut Sales, Carolyn Wincer, says of the group, "Virtuoso was our first choice for the U.S. As the leaders in luxury travel, we knew Virtuoso's members would understand and embrace this new opportunity. Their consultants possess three key assets that make them the ideal ambassadors for Virgin Galactic: they are at the forefront of exciting trends in travel; they are adept at selling exceptional experiential travel; and, they have a clientele that represent ideal candidates for space travel."

STAR TREK AUCTION - FOUNDER ASTRONAUTS BOLDLY GO WHERE NO MAN HAS GONE BEFORE!
Star Trek auctionIn celebration of the 40th anniversary of Star Trek, Christie's International held a remarkable auction (October 5-7th, 2006) of official Star Trek contents from the archives of CBS Paramount Television Studios. Over 1,000 lots from the never-before-released archives of CBS Paramount Television were auctioned, including material from all of the Star Trek television series and movies, encompassing costumes, props, weapons, set dressings, detailed models of the Enterprise and various alien ships and space stations.

Christie's Auction House arranged an exclusive private viewing of the Star Trek Auction for our Founder Astronauts on September 29th at the Christies Headquarter's, in the Rockefeller Centre, New York. Many of our customers are true Star Trek fans and were thrilled to be taken on an amazing tour of models, props, sets and costume by Michael and Denise Okuda, the original graphic art supervisors and technical consultants for all the Star Trek films.

TODAY SHOW LIFTS OFF!
Virgin Galactic at the Today Show
Following the amazing publicity at NextFest, Virgin Galactic were invited to take part in the Today Show as part of an announcement by Nieman Marcus who featured Virgin Galactic as part of their Christmas catalogue.

GO GREEN!
Richard Branson and Bill ClintonSir Richard Branson's recent announcement of Virgin's $3billion 10 year investment program in renewable energy technologies attracted significant press and media. The investment program demonstrates the Group's commitment to tackling the issue of global warming. Virgin Fuels have also recently taken a major stake in Cillion, a California based ethanol manufacturer who have a distillation process which significantly reduces carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions. Additionally there are proposals to manage Virgin's aircraft movements in ways which would dramatically reduce fuel usage.

Virgin Galactic is committed to developing as an environmentally benign operation as possible. Its planned spaceport and headquarters at Spaceport America in New Mexico are being designed with the aim of drawing all it's power from sources of renewable energy. Both SS2 and WK2 will be manufactured with ultra light, ultra strong composite materials, which will minimize the use of energy in the deployment of the vehicle to space. This is complimented by use of the latest technology in hybrid rocket motors and next generation turbo-fan engines for SS2 and WK2 which will radically reduce the environmental impact previously associated with space travel. We are also working on the development of suitable bio fuels which would reduce the impact even further.

Sir Richard Branson commented during NextFest, 'Our vision is to successfully build the world's first environmentally benign space launch system and prove once and for all the commercial viability of a safe space launch system that we believe will eventually be capable of taking pay load and science into space as well as people.'

Spaceship Engineers, Pilot Astronauts and Space Travellers of tomorrow!

After the positive reaction to NextFest's incredible Educational day which opened the doors and provided inspiration to thousands of children from New York, we at Virgin Galactic knew we had to do more to reach out to the world's youngsters to help to fire up their imaginations on space science and travel.

Meetings have been arranged with school teachers, engineers and science museums to find out the best way to raise young people's awareness on the developing commercial space industry and the best way of highlighting and promoting the importance of studying science, mathematics, engineering and technology subjects.

New Web site
Everyone that we met in New York was excited about the launch of our new website www.virgingalactic.com which went live on the day of the press announcement. Take time to browse, find out amazing facts and figures and see beautiful images.

Let the Journey Begin.........

GALACTIC GREETINGS!
The Virgin Galactic team would like to take this opportunity to wish you a peaceful, healthy and happy 2007.

RadioU Network Expands with Jampro JLST

Translator Antennas

WUFM-FM, the mother station of the RadioU Network, today announced the purchase of several Jampro model JLST translator antennas as part of a major expansion involving five FCC construction permits. The new Jampro's will serve RadioU in Ohio at W254B in Springfield, W271AO in Mt. Vernon, W263AX in Circleville and W270AT in Dayton.

Jeff Orr, Consulting Engineer on the project said of the JLST selection, "I attended NAB 2006 and looked at every antenna manufacturer. I decided to go with Jampro because of the cost, performance and reliability, just everything." Orr commented on a JLST recently tested at W254B at Springfield, "With proper tuning, we are delighted to see that we were able to achieve a VSWR below what any of our meters could read. We have been able to work with Jampro to get a cost-effective light-weight antenna that we anticipate will provide years of service."

The JLST low power antenna is made of stainless and hot-dipped galvanized steel. It was specifically designed for omni-directional translator/booster applications.  A stacking harness can be used to add multiple bays to achieve the required gain. This circularly polarized antenna takes up to 500-Watts input power, uses a type "N" connectors and is easy to install and field tune.  VSWR is 1.5:1 +/- 150 KHz or better.  Deicers are available.

WUFM is a non-commercial station owned by Spirit Communications, Inc., and broadcasts from the Columbus, Ohio at 88.7 FM. Spirit Communications, a 501(3) non-profit organization, launched RadioU in 1996 and TVU Music Television in 2001. Another Projector Shines

In keeping with recognizing projections for the new year, this Brief notes that eMarketer assembled its many metrics for a look at 2007 in several important advertising and marketing categories. The complete report may be accessed through a link at the conclusion of this report summation.

eMarketer, in its year-end overview, writes:

bulletTotal US spending on Internet advertising will reach at least $19.5 billion in 2007. This is 19% more than total spending in 2006. (Though) this rate of growth is sharply down from the 30% or more that has been the norm for several years, (and) the total US advertising spending projected to grow by 1.4% in 2007, the shift to the Internet is set to maintain its momentum in 2007.

bulleteMarketer projects that spending on Online Video Advertising will total $775 million in 2007, which represents only 4.0% of projected US online ad spending. Although marketers are increasingly keen on including video in their online ad campaigns, they will continue to face a shortage of appropriate premium placements.
bulletWorldwide ad spending on online social networks should top $1 billion in 2007, up from an estimated $445 million this year. Fueling this growth will be factors such as international expansion, "niche" networks, and search technology to MySpace from Google.
bulletDigital downloading of video games will take off in 2007, and by 2010 this distribution method will account for 22% of all worldwide game software revenues. Video-on-demand (VOD) marketers may find their skills in demand for promoting these platforms.
bulletThe number of African-American and Hispanic Internet users in the US will rise to 37 million, from 35 million in 2006. This market will continue to grow faster than the total US online population for several more years.
bulletMobile TV took its first baby steps in 2006 with professional content. In 2007 a crucial element will be added to the mobile-TV mix: user-generated content (CGC). Given the impact the Web equivalent of this development has had in 2006, advertisers and marketers are likely to face a dizzying array of new choices.
bulletUS B2C online sales will comfortably pass the $200 billion mark in 2007, reaching a new record total, which eMarketer projects will be $223 billion. Online retail sales will account for $132 billion of this, with online travel accounting for $91 billion. A significant force driving online travel sales is the demand from relatively affluent baby boomers.
bulletA recent study, from market research firm Compete, found that consumers were more likely to be swayed by CGC (consumer generated content) than by information coming directly from brand advertisers and marketers.
bulletNow broadband is about value-added services and is driven by providers bundling voice, video and data together. Services such as voice over Internet protocol (VoIP) are approaching the 30% penetration range. eMarketer predicts that one in four broadband households in 2007 will subscribe to a VoIP service, rising to nearly 40% of broadband households by 2010.
bulletMore people will watch more TV and video content in the future, not less, in spite of digital video recorders (DVRs) and video-on-demand (VOD). They will just be doing so in different ways: via the TV, the Internet, the PC and their portable devices. eMarketer predicts that VOD will be in 30% of US TV households by the end of 2007 and that DVRs will be in 30% of TV households by 2009.
