Sony Rolls Out World's Smallest Full HD Camcorder Just in Time for Your Summer Vacation
SAN DIEGO, April 3, 2008 -- The new pocket-sized Sony HDR-TG1 Handycam(R)
camcorder's weighty high-definition capability will appeal to vacationers who
prefer to "travel light."
This diminutive camcorder weighs in at only ten ounces. It has an
ultra-portable body measuring just 1.3-inches wide by 4.7-inches tall by
2.5-inches deep.
It is a full-featured camcorder that can record 1920 x 1080 HD video and
4-megapixel digital photos directly to Sony Memory Stick PRO Duo(TM) or PRO Duo
Mark2 media cards. Its size and full recording capability makes it the world's
smallest full HD camcorder.
Another bonus for any traveler is the camcorder's durable titanium body and
premium hard coating that makes it highly resistant to scratches and quite
fashionable.
It ships with a supplied 4GB PRO Duo Mark2 media card so it's ready to go
straight out of the box and you don't have to make space in your travel bag for
extra discs or tapes.
"Sony was the first to introduce a travel-sized camcorder with 8 mm
technology in the 1980's, and it revolutionized the travel and electronics
industries," said Kelly Davis, director of camcorder marketing at Sony
Electronics. "This new model is a great example of our expertise in
miniaturization, as well as advanced imaging technologies with features like
face detection."
Face Detection for the Best Possible Picture
This new model incorporates face detection technology for both video and
still images, a technology also shared with select Sony Cyber-shot(R) digital
cameras. It can identify up to eight faces in the camcorder's 2.7-inch touch
panel LCD screen, and automatically adjust focus, exposure, color control for
natural-looking skin tones, and when photos are taken, flash control.
The model also allocates more encoding bits to a detected face during the
encoding process for the best possible picture when people are the subjects.
Not Just Another Pretty Face
The camcorder features advanced video and audio technologies with simple,
intuitive operation. It is equipped with a high-quality Carl Zeiss(R)
Vario-Tessar(R) 10x optical zoom lens and 2-megapixel ClearVid(TM) CMOS sensor
with Exmor(TM)-derived technology, engineered to minimize picture noise.
The camera's BIONZ(TM) processing engine also features noise reduction
capabilities in addition to fast processing speeds. This engine powers the
model's dynamic range optimization feature, which automatically adjusts under-
or over-exposed areas in a picture. These technologies together produce
high-resolution video and photos with natural color reproduction and rich
details.
Audio is recorded in Dolby(R) Digital 5.1-channel surround sound and features
a built-in zoom microphone, delivering clear recordings of your subjects along
with the video.
Designed to be the perfect travel companion, the HDR-TG1 camcorder will ship
with supplied accessories in May for about $900. There is also an optional
travel kit (Sony ACC-TCH5) that includes a battery, travel charger and pouch for
about $100. Plus, there is a custom-fit case (Sony LCM-TGA) with brushed metal
accents available as an accessory for about $50.
All can be purchased, along with other accessory options, direct at
sonystyle.com, at Sony Style(R) retail stores (sonystyle.com/retail), at
authorized dealers nationwide, and at military base exchanges. Pre-orders begin

Sony High-Definition Cameras Named to Starting Team for NFL Championship Game
More than 30 Cameras - Sony HDC-3300 and HDC-1500 - to Capture On-field and In-Studio Action for the Big Game
-- More than 30 Sony high-definition cameras will be used by Game Creek Video, the mobile production company supporting the Fox Sports broadcast this weekend of the NFL championship game between the New York Giants and the New England Patriots. They include a combination of Sony's HDC-1500 multi-format cameras and HDC-3300 3x slow-motion cameras.
The cameras will be used for pre-game, game and in-studio programming.
A total of 27 HDC-1500 cameras will serve as the primary field-production units, supported by four HDC-3300 systems. Two of these "slow-motion" systems will be placed in each end zone, while the other two will be used as free-roaming hand-held units.
Game Creek's president Pat Sullivan is very familiar with Sony's professional cameras, having used them previously for several high-profile live events, including the NBA Finals, Major League Baseball's All Star Game and World Series, and NASCAR's Daytona 500 and other FOX Sports NASCAR events, as well as NFL regular season and playoff games on FOX Sports.
"This is the 'big game' and it is the most watched television event in the world, so we're not taking any chances," Sullivan said. "We're confident that Sony's camera systems will perform memorably for us again at the big game this year, bringing viewers at home one of the best and most immersive high-definition championship game broadcasts they've ever seen. Our track record of success with these HD cameras and their spectacular image quality are a big part of why we're bringing them to Arizona."
Game Creek will support the game with its FX HD mobile production system, which comprises five integrated production, support, and studio trailers. The company will also be using Sony HD technology for the upcoming Daytona 500 NASCAR event.
Sony's HDC-1500 multi-format camera system is capable of capturing high-definition images in either 1080i or 720P, making it the ideal system for a range of sports broadcasts and other high-end content creation applications, as well as production companies that need to handle both types of high-definition signal formats.
The HDC-3300 camera achieves 3x speed slow motion effects in full HD resolution. Designed for use by OB vans and production or rental houses, the new system can output normal speed signals simultaneously for live feeds through separate digital signal processing.

Sony High-Definition Options and Digital Video Production Headline Sundance Film Festival
HD Technologies - New XDCAM EX and HDV Camcorders - Offer Unique Benefits for Independent Production
-- Digital video production and Sony high-definition solutions are co-headliners at this year's Sundance Film Festival.
More than half of this year's festival entries were shot digitally, with many of those originated in a Sony HD video format. In addition, each of the Sundance screening venues is equipped for digital playback in the company's HDCAM(R) format.
"Sony has championed video production for moviemakers, first from analog to digital, and then from standard- to high-definition technology," said Ian Calderon, director of digital initiatives for The Sundance Institute. "The independent community continues to embrace the creative and economic advantages of shooting and recording digitally.
"With Sony's recent introductions of its HDV and XDCAM HD(TM) systems, bringing high-end capabilities down to more affordable costs, I expect to see many more independent HD features in the coming years."
At the festival's "New Frontier on Main" technology exhibit, Sony is highlighting its lineup of "affordable HD" formats that offer movie-makers a range of production options for telling their stories more creatively and effectively. These include Sony's XDCAM EX PMW-EX1 solid-state memory camcorder, and its newest HDV(TM) camcorders, models HVR-Z7U and HVR-S270U.
Each camcorder can offer specific benefits for the independent shooter.
The new PMW-EX1 camcorder records and stores content to ExpressCard(TM) high-speed media technology, using Sony's newly developed SxS PRO(TM) solid-state memory as its recording medium. The camcorder also offers selectable bit rates as well as editing and effects capabilities suited to independent production.
Its 1/2-inch type image sensor can capture images with a shallower depth of field than other hand-held camcorders' smaller-size image sensors, and the low-light capabilities of this sensor are helpful to professionals such as documentary makers who often need to capture footage in challenging lighting applications.
Other features include "Slow and Quick Motion" capability -- also commonly known as "over-cranking" and "under-cranking" -- for creating unique "looks" or special effects of slow and fast motion, and Slow Shutter and Interval Recording.
Sony's two new HDV camcorders feature interchangeable lens systems, native progressive recording, increased sensitivity for low-light conditions and hybrid solid-state recording to professional videotape and CompactFlash(R) memory cards.
Sony will highlight its professional media products that complement the camcorders designed for independent video work.
At Sundance, Sony is also conducting free workshops targeted towards digital movie-makers. Veteran director/cameraman Jody Eldred will conduct four presentations on creative shooting techniques using the XDCAM EX camcorder, showing recent footage he shot using the new camera.
Since digital technology first appeared at Sundance in the mid-'90s, there has been a steady evolution toward digital throughout the independent production community.
"It's clear that the digital and HD revolutions have made their marks in the world of independent cinematography," said Paul Foschino, senior marketing manager for professional video and audio at Sony Electronics.

Sony Bolsters Blu-Ray Disc Player Line With Two New Models
Adding ES and Step-up Models with Advanced Audio Codec Support
-- Sony introduced two additional Blu-ray Disc(TM) (BD) players today offering a full range of features.
Optimized for the home theater enthusiast, the new BDP-S2000ES model is the first Blu-ray Disc player in Sony's "Elevated Standard" (ES) line. This model, as well as the new BDP-S500, which complements Sony's current BDP-S300 BD player, features full high-definition 1080/60p and 24p True Cinema output. They support 7.1 channel linear PCM and Dolby(R) TrueHD, Dolby(R) Digital Plus, as well as dts-HD(TM) High Resolution Audio bitstream output via HDMI(TM) (ver1.3).
"Consumer support of Sony's Blu-ray Disc products has been outstanding and the new models are targeted to satisfy the demand of those who crave an even greater level of entertainment and performance," said Chris Fawcett, vice president of marketing for Sony Electronics' Home Product Division. "From the enthusiast level of our ES line down to the entry-level models, our commitment to the finest quality video and sound delivered by the BD format has never been stronger."
The BDP-S2000ES model features dual shield construction, which prevents dust from collecting on the BD drive, and a rigid drive bracket to minimize vibration. The player also sports a rigid beam chassis that reduces internal vibration, improving playback.
Similar to other Sony ES products, the unit's aluminum insulator feet help isolate the player from external vibrations, while separate audio and video boards deliver better sound and picture quality. The unit also includes the IR-in feature for custom installation market.
The BDP-S2000ES and BDP-S500 units both offer 7.1 channel Dolby TrueHD, Dolby Digital Plus, and DTS-HD High Resolution Audio bitstream output, which is optional specification of HDMI ver1.3. This makes them a perfect match for the recently announced STR-DA5300ES and STR-DA4300ES AV receivers, which also feature the ability to decode the advanced audio codecs. The new BD players also feature Dolby TrueHD, along with the Dolby Digital Plus and DTS-HD High Resolution Audio decoding function via HDMI, to offer a better sound experience with existing receivers.
The Blu-ray Disc players feature 1080/60p and 24p True Cinema output. They are compatible with most standard DVDs and feature 1080p upscaling through HDMI to capable HDTV sets, improving the picture performance of existing DVD libraries.
The new players support AVCHD discs encoded with x.v.Color(TM) (xvYCC) technology, an international standard for wide color space. The standard expands the current data range of video by about 1.8 times, allowing the players to output more natural and vivid colors similar to what the human eye can actually see. The players also feature compatibility with an array of video formats, including BD-R/RE (BDMV mode), DVD+R/+RW, DVD-R/-RW (Video Mode), CD, CD-R/RW (CD-DA format), MP3, and JPEG on DVD recordable media.
Both the BDP-S2000ES and BDP-S500 players incorporate BRAVIA(R) Theatre Sync(TM) through HDMI. This allows for integrated operation with a compatible BRAVIA flat-panel LCD HDTV sets and audio/video receivers. With the touch of a button, you can easily power on and synch the inputs of compatible Sony AV devices connected to the players via HDMI for hassle-free enjoyment of high-definition Blu-ray Discs.
The units offer optical and coaxial digital audio outputs, along with 5.1 channel decoding capability for backward compatibility with existing A/V receivers.
The new BDP-S2000ES and BDP-S500 players will be available this fall for about $1,300 and $700, respectively. They will be offered at Sony Style stores, online at sonystyle.com, at military base exchanges, and at authorized retailers nationwide.

Sony Debuts Two 1080p SXRD Front Home Theater Projectors
Integrating technology from the original, ultra-premium QUALIA(R) 004 SXRD(R) front home theater projector first introduced in 2004, Sony Electronics today unveiled two full high-definition 1080p BRAVIA(R) projectors (models VPL-VW200 and VPL-VW60) that offer the ultimate in cinema-like performance for the home theater.
The new 1920 x 1080 progressive Silicon X-tal Reflective Display (SXRD) projectors feature 24p True Cinema technology that, when paired with high-definition components like Sony's BDP-S2000ES Blu-ray Disc(TM) player, displays movies more like they are intended by their directors with smooth, film-like images.
"As the front projector home theater market grows, our commitment is to deliver high-quality, feature-rich equipment at all performance levels," said Jeff Goldstein, vice president of television and projector marketing for Sony Electronics. "Features like high frame rate, 24p True Cinema, exceptional contrast and brightness raise the stakes and bring consumers closer to a true movie theater experience in the home."
The VPL-VW200 and VPL-VW60 models feature newly designed SXRD panels with wire grid polarizers and high contrast plates that more than double the previous native contrast ratio. When combined with Sony's Advanced Iris technology, the panels help to deliver a stunning 35,000:1 dynamic contrast ratio. The VPL-VW60 model also features improved brightness of 1,000lm.
Both projectors can accept an external anamorphic lens (sold separately) that, when paired with Sony's Anamorphic zoom mode, allows users to watch movies in their native aspect ratio of 2.35:1. Specifically designed with the custom installation market in mind, the projectors are also equipped with a panel alignment adjustment function that aligns each red, green and blue pixel for precise images.
The VPL-VW200 projector also has new high frame rate SXRD (120 FPS) panels and offers three motion compensation modes. These enable users to adapt performance based on content for the best possible motion reproduction and picture quality with moving images. The model also features a Carl Zeiss(R) Vario-Tesar lens optimized for SXRD, supports x.v.Color(TM) technology via HDMI(TM), and adds a high output pure Xenon lamp that maintains the ideal color temperature characteristics of red, green and blue for accurate color display. Additionally, the unit is equipped with an Ethernet input allowing for set up and control of the projector from a PC through the Internet.
The new VPL-VW200 and VPL-VW60 models feature all-digital video signal processing via the BRAVIA Engine(TM) with its unique algorithms for noise reduction and color enhancement to deliver sharp, vibrant images.
The projectors also feature advanced cooling structures that produce a low fan noise of 22dB. They have 1.8x powered lens zoom, in addition to adjustable lens shift and blanking for flexible home theater installation.
The VPL-VW200 projector will be available in October for about $15,000, while the VPL-VW60 unit will be available in September for about $5,000. Both models will be offered at Sony Style(R) retail stores nationwide, as well as military base exchanges and authorized dealers around the country.

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment's Total Blu-ray Disc Sales Across Europe Reach the 250,000 Milestone
- North American Sales Nearing 1 Million -
SPIDER-MAN(TM) 3, The High-Definition SPIDER-MAN(TM) Trilogy and Steven Spielberg's Close Encounters of the Third Kind debut Q4
IFA -- Sony Pictures Home Entertainment (SPHE) today announced that the company's Blu-ray Disc(TM) sales across Europe have reached 250,000 while sales in North America are nearing the one million mark approaching the fourth quarter with the Blu-ray launch of the highly anticipated blockbuster SPIDER-MAN 3 and Steven Spielberg's CLOSE ENCOUNTERS OF THE THIRD KIND.
These benchmarks follow last week's announcement that sales of the high-definition format in six emerging markets including Hong Kong, Singapore, Taiwan, Eastern Europe, South Africa and the Middle East now account for 10 percent of SPHE's total business in the growing regions.
Said David Bishop, President, Worldwide, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment: "These sales milestones across the world illuminate the positive reception from retailers and consumers alike for Blu-ray. Our strong fourth quarter line-up will underscore the confidence in this format."
Since the European launch of the PS3 in March, weekly sales of Blu-ray Disc(TM) titles have averaged between two- and five-times the amount of HD DVD sales week over week.**
Blu-ray(TM) High-Def software now accounts for 69% of the total high-definition market in Europe, with SPHE titles making up more than 47% of the total European Blu-ray market. SPHE also holds the #1 best selling high-definition title in Europe -- Casino Royale.
Simon McDowell, Senior Vice President, Europe, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment added: "With the breadth of titles already available on Blu-ray, the format is out-selling HD-DVD by more than 2:1 in Europe. Going into Q4, SPHE has a strong slate on deck and support from retailers, which should further propel momentum for Blu-ray."
As part of the company's fourth quarter Blu-ray Disc(TM) line-up, Spider-Man will be making his way to Blu-ray with the much anticipated release of Spider-Man 3(TM) in Europe from 15 October*. Spider-Man and Spider-Man 2 will also be exclusively available for the first time on Blu-ray(TM) High-Def in the Spider-Man High Definition Trilogy Set.
Steven Spielberg's critically acclaimed classic, Close Encounters of the Third Kind will be released in Europe on Blu-ray Disc(TM) from 12 November. All three versions of the film are included on one 50GB disc through seamless branching.
SPHE was the first studio to release Blu-ray titles in Europe and SPHE has released a broad selection of Blu-ray Disc titles since the format's initial launch including Casino Royale and Black Hawk Down. To date SPHE has released more than 40 Blu-ray(TM) High-Def titles across Europe, with more than 30 titles scheduled for release between now and Christmas in Europe.
Blu-ray Disc(TM) titles for Q4 include:
SPIDER-MAN 3 & SPIDER-MAN HIGH DEFINITION TRILOGY - from 3 September
The Spider-Man High Definition Trilogy is a three-pack release of all three films on Blu-ray(TM) High-Def allowing fans an exclusive opportunity to collect both Spider-Man and Spider-Man 2 in high definition, along with Spider-Man 3 and the branching elements from Spider-Man 2.1 extended cut. Spider-Man 3 will also be available as a stand-alone two-disc release on Blu-ray(TM) High-Def, with the feature presented on a 50GB dual-layer disc and more than six hours of all-new bonus materials, including a trio of featurettes spotlighting the cinematic creation of the web crawler's greatest nemeses, on a second 25GB disc. Directed by Sam Raimi and starring Tobey Maguire, Kirsten Dunst, James Franco, Thomas Haden Church, and Topher Grace, Spider-Man 3 smashed box office records and grossed more than $885 million worldwide during its theatrical run.
CLOSE ENCOUNTERS OF THE THIRD KIND: 30th ANNIVERSARY ULTIMATE EDITION - from 12 November
Close Encounters of the Third Kind, Steven Spielberg's critically acclaimed classic, will be released on Blu-ray Disc(TM) from 12 November. Celebrating the 30th anniversary of this motion picture, the set incorporates all three versions of the film, including the first-ever home video release of the 1977 Original Theatrical edition, as well as the re-edited 1980 theatrical Special Edition and Spielberg's definitive Director's Cut (released in 1998 as the Collector's Edition). This marks the first classic Spielberg film ever to be released on a pre-recorded high definition disc format.
The stunning high definition presentation of Close Encounters of the Third Kind: 30th Anniversary Ultimate Edition contains all three cinematic versions on just one 50 GB Blu-ray Disc(TM), with bonus material included on a second disc. All three versions are included on one disc through a process known as "seamless branching," made possible with the added interactivity of Blu-ray's software and the robust processing power of the players. This process identifies the differences between each version of the film and segments the footage accordingly. These segments are then encoded and assembled into three unique playlists, thus allowing footage used in all three films to be included on the Blu-ray Disc(TM) only once. Based on the viewer's selection of the Original Version, Special Edition or definitive Director's Cut, each film will be presented seamlessly in its original form by use of its respective playlist.
Added value materials on the Close Encounters of the Third Kind: 30th Anniversary Ultimate Edition high definition Blu-ray Disc(TM) include an exclusive interview with Spielberg created specifically for this release, all-new "Storyboard-to-Scene Comparisons," the original 1977 "Watch The Skies" featurette and an original theatrical preview.

Cody believes that winning will bring him the admiration and respect he deserves. But when he unexpectedly comes face to face with Geek, a washed up old surfer, Cody begins to understand that the greatest champion isn't always the one who comes in first.

Sony Pictures Studios to Offer Twilight Tours
Visitors Can Discover One Of World's Most Famous Studio Lots On Thursday Evenings From June 14 To September 28
- Sony Pictures Studios announced today that beginning June 14, visitors will
be able to take Twilight Tours of the historic studio every Thursday through
September 28th.
"From The Wizard of Oz to Spider-Man 3, this is the lot where dreams are
made," said Pam Byrne, Director of Studio Services. "Now people can enjoy warm
summer evenings by experiencing the glamour and history of Sony Pictures
Studios. Our Twilight Tours offer the perfect opportunity to treat family,
friends and out-of-town guests to a one-of-a-kind, unforgettable Hollywood
experience."
The tours last approximately 90 minutes and begin at 6:30 p.m. in the lobby
of Sony Pictures Plaza. Free parking is available under the Sony Pictures Plaza
building off Madison Avenue in Culver City, between West Washington Boulevard
and Culver Boulevard.
"This is a working studio, so people walking the lot during their tour may
have a chance to see an actual set for a motion picture or television show or,
on occasion, actors and extras on the lot for a shoot," said Byrne. "Our
visitors also get to see where real Hollywood history was made, from Stage 15
where the Yellow Brick Road once wound through Munchkin Land to Stage 30 where
Esther Williams made a splash in the early 1940's. In addition, guests can see
props like the motorcycles from Ghost Rider, the neuralizer from Men in Black,
the proton pack from Ghostbusters, and the Cryptex from The DaVinci Code, among
many others cinema icons."
The Twilight Tour begins with a video about the studio's history. From there
guests walk through the Madison Gate, tracing the footsteps of famous stars who
made history throughout the lot. Visitors can often see actual Oscar(R)
statuettes celebrating a number of Columbia Pictures' "Best Picture" awards, as
well as Scoring and Foley stages, and the sets of shows like Wheel of Fortune
and Jeopardy.
Movies were first made on the site of Sony Pictures Studios back in 1915,
when Ince/Triangle Studios set up shop there. It was taken over by famous
Hollywood pioneers D.W. Griffith and Mack Sennett and later sold to Samuel
Goldwyn. In 1924, MGM Studios began making movies on the lot and continued for
nearly sixty years. Sony Pictures acquired the site in 1990 and began a
rehabilitation of the studio that was completed in 1997.
Sony Pictures Entertainment is currently the #1 studio in Hollywood in
domestic box office receipts. Over the past year, it has released such popular
films as The Da Vinci Code, Click, Talladega Nights: The Ballad Of Ricky Bobby,
Casino Royale, Ghost Rider and Spider-Man 3.
For more information about the Twilight Tours, or to make reservations,
please call 310-520-TOUR (8687) or 323-520-TOUR (8687). Admission is $25 per
person. Discounted rates for group and student tours are available. Children 12
and older are welcome. Dress weather appropriate, and this is a walking tour, so
please wear comfortable footwear. Sony Pictures Studios also offers tours during
the day, Monday-to-Friday. Sony Pictures Studios is located at 10202 West
Washington Boulevard, Culver City, CA 90232. For further information and

Sony Pictures Classics Acquires North American Distribution Rights to Francis Ford Coppola's 'YOUTH WITHOUT YOUTH'
Sony Pictures Classics has acquired North American distribution rights for Francis Ford Coppola's YOUTH WITHOUT YOUTH.
Coppola wrote, directed, and produced YOUTH WITHOUT YOUTH, adapting the screenplay from a novella by legendary Romanian author Mircea Eliade. YOUTH WITHOUT YOUTH marks Coppola's long-awaited return to personal filmmaking -- harkening back to earlier projects such as THE RAIN PEOPLE and THE CONVERSATION. It is his first film in a decade.
YOUTH WITHOUT YOUTH stars Tim Roth as Dominic Matei, an elderly professor whose mysterious rejuvenation heightens his intelligence and whose apparent immortality makes him a target for the Nazis in this World War II-era parable. "It is a love story wrapped in a mystery," said Coppola.
"This film was conceived and completed independently. It was made with a small team that worked intensively in Romania for a year and a half. The story revolves around the key themes that I most hope to understand better: time, consciousness, and the dream-like basis of reality," said Coppola. "I consider SONY CLASSICS the pre-eminent distributor of fine filmmaking. Following in a tradition begun at the side of Arthur Krim, through the excellence of UA and Orion Classics, Michael Barker and Tom Bernard remain for me the ultimate authority of what I consider true cinema -- ambitious and satisfying personal films that take their place alongside traditions of literature and art. I consider myself fortunate to be working with such a company and proud that YOUTH WITHOUT YOUTH will be under their care. I am lucky that my number one wish for the distributor of YOUTH WITHOUT YOUTH has come true."
Michael Barker and Tom Bernard co-presidents of Sony Pictures Classics say, "'Youth Without Youth' is what we call a full meal, satisfying in all departments. It is personal, sweeping, and entertaining. It is unlike anything we've seen before. It is the kind of innovative movie we've come to appreciate from new successful independent filmmakers while at the same time possessing a mastery of story, sound, and visuals that you can only get from a Francis Coppola movie. The title says it all. We are thrilled to bring such a film to the American audience. May Sony Pictures Classics bring the same fresh energy to the release of 'Youth Without Youth' as Francis has in its creation."
The film also stars Alexandra Maria Lara, Bruno Ganz, Andre M. Hennicke, Marcel Iures, and introduces Alexandra Pirici.
Anahid Nazarian and Fred Roos were Executive Producers. The director of photography was Mihai Malaimare Jr; with production design by Calin Papura, and costume design by Gloria Papura. Academy-Award winner Peter King and Jeremy Woodhead designed and executed the special makeup effects and hairstyles. Roman Coppola directed the second unit. Oscar-winner Walter Murch joined Coppola in Romania to edit the film. The music was composed by one of today's most exciting classical composers, Osvaldo Golijov. The film was a Euro-treaty co-production of SRG Atelier, Pricel, and BIM Distribuzione, and is presented by American Zoetrope. A late Fall 2007 release is planned.
American Zoetrope has been a leader in innovation and discovery of new talent ever since its inception in 1969 and has produced some of the most important films in American cinema, including AMERICAN GRAFFITI, THE GODFATHER, PARTS II, THE BLACK STALLION, THE CONVERSATION, APOCALYPSE NOW, KOYAANISQATSI and most recently LOST IN TRANSLATION, KINSEY and MARIE ANTOINETTE. Zoetrope-produced films have received seventeen Academy Awards; seventy-one nominations with four films included in the American Film Institute's top 100 American films.
Sony ACIDplanet.com to Host 'The Ataris' Pop-Punk Band Video Creation Remix Contest
ACIDplanet.com Contestants Are the First to Remix Tracks and Produce an Original Music Video From the Band's Unreleased Fifth Studio Album, 'Welcome the Night'
- ACIDplanet.com(R), one of the Internet's premier sites for user-generated
music and video content and computer-based recording and remixing tools, has
launched a new remix contest with a reinvented, pop-indie rock band, The Ataris.
Aspiring musicians and music video producers can now add their style and flavor
to a song track off the Ataris' upcoming album, "Welcome the Night."
The Ataris were discovered in early 1997 and soon after signed and made their
first record, "Anywhere But Here" by Kung-Fu Record Label. After another album
release in 2003, the Ataris experienced several band member dissolutions and
major record label transitions. By 2005, The Ataris were re-born with seven new
band members and a sound created as uniquely as the band's history. Members,
Kristopher Roe, John Collura, Paul Carabello, Angus Cooke, Bob Hoag, Sean Hansen
and Shane Chickeles have reinvented The Ataris with their latest album, "Welcome
the Night."
Exclusively at ACIDplanet.com, remix contest participants can create an
original music video for the Ataris' track, "Connections Are More Dangerous Than
Lies" from their new Sanctuary Records unreleased album, "Welcome the Night."
ACIDPlanet.com remix contest participants can create their own music video
and score it with the original (unremixed) track, "Connections Are More
Dangerous Than Lies." For those participants who don't already have video
editing software, they can download a free trial version of any application in
the Vegas(R) video editing product family. Participants can then download the
original track, create their video and score it in any editing software
application. When participants are finished, they simply click the "Upload My
Entry" button to upload their video and complete their entry into the video
contest.
ACIDPlanet.com remix contest participants will be allowed to start
downloading the Ataris' single, "Connections Are More Dangerous Than Lies" on
Thursday, March 22, 2007. All entries must be fully uploaded by 12:00 a.m.
midnight PST on Thursday, May 03, 2007. The winner will receive merchandise from
Sony Media Software and Sanctuary Records including a copy of both Vegas+DVD
Production Suite ($699) and ACID Pro 6 ($499) software applications, along with
a signed copy of the Ataris new album, "Welcome the Night" on both CD and Vinyl
and much more.

Sony Debuts Its First Wireless Cyber-Shot Digital Camera
-- Sony is advancing wireless digital photo sharing with today's introduction of the 6-megapixel Cyber-shot (R) DSC-G1 digital camera.
The G1 model is Sony's first digital camera with the ability to send photos wirelessly to other Digital Living Network Alliance (DLNA)-enabled devices, such as another camera or a PC.
"This is a step towards realizing a platform for networked photo communication," said Phil Lubell, director of marketing for digital cameras at Sony Electronics. "We will continue to explore the possibilities for networked digital imaging as broadband Internet becomes more pervasive in American homes."
One-Touch Wireless Photo Sharing and Archiving
The G1 model features a 3.5-inch LCD screen with resolution of 921,000 pixels. Lubell said that's four times higher than the average compact digital camera and all previous Sony Cyber-shot models. The new camera's slide show with music function makes sharing photos directly on the camera even more enjoyable.
"Sony popularized the use of large LCD screens on compact cameras, with the understanding that simply passing the camera around is a means of sharing," Lubell said.
The new models' camera-to-camera wireless capability makes it possible to send your friends a photo at the push of a button. It's also possible for up to four camera users to send each other photos in real time. With a DLNA-compatible PC, storing and sharing photos becomes simplified through wireless image transfer from the camera to the PC.
Mega Storage Capacity and Sophisticated Image Management
The G1 unit is the ideal vacation camera with 2GB of internal memory, saving you from having to manage extra media cards. It becomes a virtual photo album in your pocket as it can store up to 7,500 VGA-quality photos or 600 6-megapixel pictures. If additional storage is needed, the camera's capacity can be expanded with an optional Memory Stick Duo (TM) media card or Memory Stick PRO Duo (TM) card, now available in capacities up to eight gigabytes.
In addition to storage capacity, it incorporates an auto image management system with sophisticated search functions. You can organize your photos by events, such as vacations or birthdays, and retrieve them later by keywords or labels. It's also possible to select an image and search for other photos with the same face, same color, or a similar composition.
Armed with features for optimal shooting and sharing, the new model also integrates built-in technologies to minimize image blur, including Super Steady Shot(R) optical image stabilization. It also has high light sensitivity, up to ISO 1000, to facilitate shooting at higher shutter speeds, as well as low-light conditions for more natural exposures or for settings where flash is not permitted.
This new Cyber-shot model also features a distinctive design. Its Carl Zeiss(R) 3x optical zoom lens is wrapped in an elegant metal body. You slide the lens cover across, instead of down as with previous models, and you're ready to shoot in less than a second.
The DSC-G1 digital camera will ship in April for about $600. Additional accessories will include lenses, filters, batteries, travel chargers, sports packs and cases. All can be purchased online at sonystyle.com, at Sony Style retail stores (www.sonystyle.com/retail), and at authorized dealers nationwide. Pre-orders at www.sonystyle.com/newcameras.

Sony Pictures Television Opens Ripley Vault: Places Hundreds of Ripley's Believe It Not! TV Segments on Internet, Mobile Phones
Sony Pictures International has secured the rights from Ripley Entertainment Inc. to distribute "mobisodes,'' or segments of the Ripley's Believe It or Not! television show, to mobile phone users and Internet browsers.
The segments include unbelievable and completely wacky humans, incredible feats and animal oddities ranging from a microchip dog to mountain stilt hikers! The show segments are expected to be available to the public later this year and will be available through mobile devices, Internet, airline in-flight entertainment and on-demand channels.
The three-year deal signed with CPT Holdings, Inc., a subsidiary of Sony Pictures Television International, showcases the insatiable need for mobile information and content for the Internet - especially that of bite-sized, captivating pieces of entertainment.
"We are pioneers in the broadcasting of weird and wacky and unbelievable material, both on radio and television. Through the years, we have proven that truth is absolutely stranger than fiction,'' said Bob Masterson, President of Ripley Entertainment. "These shows transcend time and we're fortunate to have the ability to adapt the clips for use in today's popular media platforms through our partnership with Sony."
Norm Deska, Executive Vice President of Intellectual Property for Ripley Entertainment, agrees that most of the show segments are timeless. "When we worked with Sony years ago on the production of these shows, we never dreamed this footage would have any use other than that of television. We are excited that a whole new generation will have the opportunity to witness amazing Believe It or Nots! through a more contemporary channel of communication."
Sony Pictures Television will draw in material from the 79 one-hour episodes of the Ripley Believe It or Not! Television hosted by Jack Palance that aired in the 1980s and from the 88 one-hour episodes in the Dean Cain series that ran 1999-2003.

Sony Brings High-Definition Photo Viewing to the Living Room
Designed to make photo-viewing crystal clear, Sony today announced a new line of digital cameras featuring a high-definition component output. These new Cyber-shot(R) W-series cameras offer direct connection to an HDTV, which is ideal for integrating full 1080 HD photo-viewing into a home theater.
At the top of the line is the DSC-W200 camera, the most compact 12-megapixel camera in the industry. It is followed by the 8-megapixel DSC-W90 unit and the 7.2-megapixel DSC-W80 model. All sport Carl Zeiss(R) 3x optical zoom lenses; traditional, eye-level viewfinders; and large, 2.5-inch LCD screens wrapped in sleek metal bodies.
Seeing Is Believing in High Definition
"As HDTV becomes more pervasive in American households, it is only natural to want to view all of your content in high definition, including photos," said Phil Lubell, director for digital cameras at Sony Electronics. "Our new cameras support a shift in customer behavior -- from viewing digital photos on a PC to having a full entertainment experience in the living room."
Sony is offering three accessory options to begin enjoying high-definition photo viewing. The new cameras are compatible with the Sony VMC-MHC1 high-definition component cable for simple connection to an HDTV set.
The cameras can also be used with the new Sony CSS-HD1 high-definition Cyber-shot Station(R), which comes with the component cable. You can connect the cameras to the station just one time, and it will also work as a charger for the camera.
For complete integration into your home theater system, there is the DSC-W80HDPR kit, which bundles a DSC-W80 camera and Sony's DPP-FPHD1 printer package. This package consists of the VMC-MHC1 high-definition component cable, a Cyber-shot cradle, a remote commander, and a digital photo printer with high-definition component output.
This new printer lets you print photos on the spot in about 45 seconds. Designed to complement any living room, it comes in elegant black and can be positioned horizontally or vertically.
All of the new cameras feature a built-in slide show function. You can play back your images with pans, fades and wipe transitions set to your choice of music clips.
Reduce Your Chances of Taking Bad Photos
With these cameras, you can be more confident in your ability to take properly-exposed, sharp photos. All incorporate Sony's new face detection technology, which can identify up to eight faces in the camera's LCD frame, and automatically adjust white balance and flash as well as focus and exposure.
If you decide that the flower arrangement should be in the picture as well, the new multi-point auto focus (AF) feature can automatically determine the right focus of up to nine points in the camera frame, rather than focusing on what is in the middle of the frame.
You can easily knock out blurry photos, especially in challenging low-light conditions. The cameras incorporate Super Steady Shot(R) optical image stabilization to safeguard against blur caused by camera shake. Their high sensitivity (up to ISO3200) settings can help to fight blur associated with fast-moving subjects. Sony's Clear RAW (TM) noise reduction technology will minimize picture noise common to images shot at high ISO levels.
Edit On The Fly
The new W-series models incorporate selectable in-camera editing functions that can save you from hours of post-editing time at the computer. Equipped with Sony's Dynamic Range Optimizer, the cameras can analyze captured image data and instantly determine the best exposure and tonality of each picture before JPEG compression.
Other helpful in-camera functions include red-eye correction and retouching effects. You can create artistic photos with the soft edge filter that emphasizes a focused subject by blurring the background. The partial color filter highlights the subject by letting it remain in color while making the background black-and-white. Photos can be enhanced with the cross filter that adds four-point star effects to the light in an image, and enlivened with the fish-eye filter for an amusing fishbowl effect.
Shoot At The Speed of Life
All of the new cameras are powered by the Bionz(TM) processing engine, first used in Sony's Alpha digital SLR camera system. This newly-added circuitry delivers the fast image processing speeds needed to produce color rich, detailed pictures for true high-definition photo viewing.
The Bionz engine also helps to speed up the cameras' response times and extend battery life. On a full chare, the W90 camera can shoot up to 350 shots, the W80 model up to 340 shots and the W200 unit up to 270 shots.
The silver W200 camera will ship in May for about $400. The W90 camera will be available in March for about $300 in black and silver. The W80 model will be hit stores in March for about $250 in pink, white, black and silver. Options will include batteries, travel chargers, lenses, filters, sports packs and cases. The DSC-W80HDPR kit will be available for about $400 in April. All products can be purchased online at sonystyle.com, at Sony Style(R) retail stores (www.sonystyle.com/retail), and at authorized dealers nationwide. Pre-orders begin on Feb. 28 at www.sonystyle.com/newcameras.

Seeking to jumpstart
sales of next generation high definition movie format Blu-ray Disc, Sony Corp.
Feb. 27 announced it would this summer start distributing a new Blu-ray player
priced 40% less than its current $999 BDP-S1 player.
The $599 BDP-S300 will feature 1080p (progressive) high-def video resolution via
an HDMI connection Sony said is similar to an output signal of 24 frames per
second.
The device, which is smaller and lighter than the BDP-S1, also includes a 1080i
output for HDTVs not equipped with HDMI.
The BDP-S300’s price is the same as the enhanced edition of Sony’s PlayStation 3
video game console that features a Blu-ray Disc drive. The standard PS3 retails
for $499.
Samsung, Pioneer, Philips, Panasonic and Sharp Corp. also market Blu-ray Disc
players.
Stan Glasgow, president of Sony Electronics, told the Associated Press he
expects the average price of Blu-ray players to fall below $500 by Christmas.
The new device is compatible with most standard DVDs and can play alternative
video formats such as MPEG2, MPEG4-AVC and VC1.
It will support AVC-HD discs encoded with xvYCC technology, a new international
color standard Sony says expands the current data range of video about 1.8
times.
To the naked eye, video colors would appear more natural and vivid, according to
Sony.
The player supports BD-ROM, BD-Java, AVC-HD and DVD playback from DVD/DVD+R/+RW
encoded discs, CD playback, as well as MP3 audio files and JPEG images stored on
DVD recordable media.
The original BDP-S1 cannot play music CDs.
In addition, the BDP-S300 offers multi-channel linear PCM digital audio output
via HDMI, and can decode Dolby Digital Plus, providing optimum surround sound to
an appropriately equipped receiver.
The unit has optical and coaxial digital audio out, along with 5.1 channel
decoding capability for backward compatibility with existing receivers.

Sony Computer Entertainment Executive Phil Harrison to Illuminate Possibilities of Connected Communities in 2007 Game Developers Conference Keynote, 'Game 3.0'
President, SCE Worldwide Studios, to Share With Developers Creative and Commercial Opportunities Made Real by the Third Age of Video Games
Phil Harrison, President, Worldwide Studios, Sony Computer Entertainment (SCE),
will return to the Game Developers Conference (GDC) to present the keynote,
"Game 3.0: Developing and Creating for the Third Age of Video Games."
Complementing the "Take Control" theme of GDC 2007, Harrison's talk aims to
enable developers to make the most of the countless opportunities made available
by the new era of connectivity. GDC, CMP Technology's annual conference
dedicated to the art, science and business of games, takes place March 5-9, 2007
at the Moscone Convention Center in San Francisco.
In his talk, Harrison will explore the seemingly infinite entertainment,
creative, and commercial opportunities presented by the massively connected
communities of players and developers. He will enlighten attendees as to what
"always on" can mean for both the game development industry and consumer, as
well as what some of the innovative products and services are that will help
content developers define and shape the meaning of Game 3.0. The SCE Worldwide
Studios head will also demonstrate some exclusive insights into the company's
development of products and services that will help define future growth in the
video game market.
"Each console cycle gives platforms the chance to reinvent the experiences
they enable developers to provide to gamers," said Jamil Moledina, Executive
Director of the Game Developers Conference. "Phil Harrison is uniquely
positioned to apply both his prescient creative abilities and his command of a
globe-spanning network of leading development teams -- to bring the entire
developer community in on the giant leap forward of the PLAYSTATION(R)3."
Phil Harrison has been immersed in the creativity, technology and business of
game development for over 20 years. In September 2005, Sony Computer
Entertainment unified its regional product development operations under a global
structure, Sony Computer Entertainment Worldwide Studios, and appointed Harrison
to serve as President of the new organization. Working closely with the talented
studios in Japan, Europe, North America and Polyphony Digital, Inc., Harrison is
responsible for setting the global product strategy and managing development
operations of 14 studios in 5 countries. He is a corporate executive and
representative director of Sony Computer Entertainment Inc, and Executive Vice
President of Sony Computer Entertainment Europe. Since joining Sony in 1992,
Harrison has held executive management positions in Europe and North America --
where he served as Vice President, 3rd Party Relations and Research and
Development for SCEA from 1996 to 2000. He has been a core member of the teams
that successfully launched all of the PlayStation family of hardware formats and
innovative software that have helped expand the market for interactive
entertainment worldwide.
Phil Harrison's keynote, "Game 3.0: Developing and Creating for the Third Age
of Video Games," will take place from 10:30 a.m. - 11:30 a.m. in the Esplanade
Room of the Moscone Center's South Hall on Wednesday, March 7.
More than 12,500 game industry professionals will convene during GDC, the
world's largest games industry-only event dedicated to the advancement of
resources, tools and technologies used to create interactive entertainment. The
GDC features more than 300 lectures, panels, tutorials and round-table
discussions on a comprehensive selection of game development topics taught by

| SONY’S XDCAM HD SYSTEM IS TOOL OF CHOICE FOR AWARD-WINNING “SPEARGUN HUNTER” DOCUMENTARY | |
|
Optical Camcorders Team with HDV Tape-based Camcorders to Capture
Dramatic Footage above and below the Water’s Surface
TEMECULA, Calif., Jan. 24, 2007 – Documenting the life of an ocean speargun hunter is challenging enough for a moviemaker; doing it while fighting ocean swells and gusting wind makes a shoot even more complex. That’s why Filmmaker and Director of Photography Robin D. Berg chose Sony’s new optical disc-based XDCAM HD™ Professional Disc™ System to produce “Speargun Hunter,” a new documentary airing on the Outdoor Channel this month. Berg shot all the above-water footage for “Speargun Hunter” with the XDCAM HD PDW-F350 camcorder, which easily withstood saltwater spray, tight quarters, and wave-tossed seas. “The XDCAM® format is solid and I experienced no digital dropout or other media problems associated with tape,” Berg said. “The disc-based camera is very user friendly; Sony definitely got it right.” Berg’s favorite XDCAM HD features are the flip-out LCD monitor and the random access capabilities of Sony’s blue laser-based Professional Disc optical media, which allow instant thumbnail views of footage on-site. Berg added that the media’s cost-effectiveness – up to 65 minutes of HD storage on a disc that costs less than $30 (MSRP) – also helped his budget. According to Berg, the intense three-month production schedule took him, his production crew and expert speargun hunters Sheri Daye and Chad Palan to the waters of Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, along with Key West and the Treasure Coast in Florida. World-record spear fisherman and underwater photographer Terry Maas shot the production’s underwater footage with Sony’s HVR-Z1U compact HDV camcorder, encased in an underwater housing. Using this tape-based model, Maas captured Palan and Daye’s underwater adventures, including Daye’s close encounter with a shark and her successful struggle to capture a world record-sized Yellow fin tuna. Berg noted that he condensed highlights of 13 hours of footage into an hour-long documentary that will air on the Outdoor Channel. The production also took “Best Documentary” honors at the Temecula Valley (Calif.) International Film and Music Festival in September. Berg, president of Berg Entertainment International Inc. and director of more than 400 episodes of broadcast television, plans to make the XDCAM HD system his primary camera for other upcoming ocean adventure programming. “The footage shot by the XDCAM HD system affirms our belief that the future for HD is very bright,” Dale said at the documentary’s screening in Temecula. “The clarity and vividness of the footage holds up extremely well, even when viewed on movie-theater-sized projection screens.” |

| SONY RINGS IN THE NEW YEAR WITH AN ARRAY OF DIGITAL CAMERAS | |
|
SAN DIEGO, Jan. 17, 2007 — Sony is ringing in the New Year with four additions to its Cyber-shot® digital camera line: the DSC-W55, DSC-W35, DSC-S700 and DSC-S650 models. The slim, compact DSC-W55 and DSC-W35 models will sport 7.2-megapixel imagers and precision Carl Zeiss® Vario-Tessar lenses. They combine traditional, eye-level viewfinders with large LCD screens for easy framing and viewing of photos. The W55 camera will make a splash in Caribbean blue, pale pink, elegant black and sleek silver with a 2.5-inch LCD screen wrapped in a metal body, and the W35 camera will shimmer in silver with a two-inch screen. The new DSC-S700 and DSC-S650 cameras will also feature 7.2-megapixel imagers, and will shine in classic silver. The former model will house a 2.4-inch LCD wrapped in a metal body and the latter a two-inch screen. All four new models feature 3x optical zoom capability, blur-reduction technologies (ISO), and substantial internal memory for shooting without a media card. Their storage capacities can be expanded further with optional 8GB Memory Stick Duo ™ or Memory Stick PRO Duo™ flash media cards for the W-series models and 4 GB Duo media cards for the S-series models. “Now that digital cameras are personal items, it’s common to have more than one camera per household,” said Phil Lubell, director of marketing for digital cameras at Sony Electronics. “Our new models are solid performers that will be easy for novices to digital photography to use and at the same time meet the needs of more advanced users.” Capture the Mood High sensitivity is featured on all of the cameras to reduce the chances of taking blurry photos, especially in low light situations. With settings up to ISO1000, you can shoot at higher shutter speeds to capture the candles on a birthday cake or the city lights without using a flash. On the W-series cameras, Sony's Clear RAW ™ noise reduction technology helps reduce picture noise common to low-light exposures. Sony’s AF Illuminator also facilitates these models’ ability to shoot well in low light. A special light is thrown on subjects before taking a shot so that the camera’s imager can better detect contrast. The end result is well-focused, clear pictures, even in low light. Shoot At The Speed of Life These new models feature quick start-up, fast shot-to-shot times, and long battery life – up to 380 shots on a full charge of the W55 and W35 cameras’ Lithium ion battery, and 460 shots on a full charge of the S700 and S650 models’ optional, rechargeable AA batteries. The cameras' sophisticated auto-exposure and auto-focus features work fast so you get the picture right the first time. No More Guesswork All models incorporate a function guide and resolution guide. When menu icons are selected, a simple text explanation is displayed on the LCD screen. This function guide is readily-accessible through a convenient mode dial. The resolution guide is helpful when deciding on the best resolution for prints. When you select the resolution in the menu, a pop-up screen provides the ideal print size for that particular setting. In stores in February, the W55 model will be available for about $200, the W35 for about $180, and the S650 for about $150. The S700 ships in March for about $180. Options will include batteries, travel chargers, lenses, filters, sports packs, and cases. All models can be purchased online at Sonystyle.com, at Sony Style® retail stores (www.sonystyle.com/retail), and at authorized dealers nationwide. Pre-orders begin on Jan. 23 at www.sonystyle.com/cameras2007. |

| SONY SPOTLIGHTS SYSTEM MONITORING AND DIGITAL SIGNAGE TECHNOLOGIES FOR RETAIL AT NRF SHOW | |
|
PARK RIDGE, N.J., Jan. 16, 2007 – Sony Electronics is featuring new technologies and systems for managing and automating retail environments at the National Retail Federation show being held this week at New York’s Jacob Javits Convention Center. The company will demonstrate iTRx™, an automated process error remediation system, and its Network Operations Center services. The NOC services incorporate Sony’s StorWatch application to remotely monitor retail locations, initiate and manage daily processes, and communicate with store personnel to remedy store process errors. “Retail environments are increasingly turning to remote diagnostic and monitoring technologies to lower operating expenses and streamline processes,” said Erwin Ishmael, senior vice president of Sony’s Professional Services group. “The results can be less system downtime, faster response to errors and a reduction in the costs associated with call center operations and manual error remediation.” The group is also featuring tape-based and tape-less storage devices for remotely managing and storing/restoring retail data such as inventory and point-of-sale and pharmacy data. Sony’s products and services can also help retailers aggregate and process data more effectively. Ishmael said this technology is useful for keeping supply-chains updated and tracking consumer purchasing patterns. Sony is also demonstrating its networked digital signage device (model BKM-FW50). Retailers can use it to centrally create, schedule and deliver content to Sony’s large-format displays throughout a store or across multiple locations. Ishmael said with this type of in-store signage network, retailers can change messages easily and quickly according to month, season, or even time of day. Sony is also showing several of its IP-based security and surveillance technologies. |

About EverQuest The Buried Sea
Throngs of undead trample the earth both night and day as Norrath's sun withers.
With each passing hour, the growing numbers of creatures of the night rising
from crypts and graves seem part of a grand design to overwhelm the lands.
Trouble also lurks deep beneath the Buried Sea off the coast of Odus in a city
named Katta Castrum, which has remained undiscovered for millennia. It is a city
built to sustain the beloved leader of the Combine Empire who was poisoned.
Generations of Combine Loyalists have tried to cure and awaken him while they
house threatened populations of Kedge, Shissar, and Sphinx. But in recent times,
the artifact that powers and protects their city has weakened. Without it, the
city will be crushed under the pressure of the sea. Only the most intrepid
Norrathians have the power to save them.
EverQuest The Buried Sea Features
• Ship-to-Ship Combat – Cross the plank and fight for your life on the open seas
as you raid pirate vessels!
• Two Paths of Advancement – Battle pirates on the open seas or dive deep
beneath the sea to Katta Castrum, lost stronghold of the Combine Empire.
• New Missions – Take your group through more than 60 challenging new missions
ranging from defending merchant vessels against marauding pirates to uncovering
the secrets behind the combine city and the danger that threatens it!
• Guild Banners – Design a guild emblem and display it with pride! Upgrade your
banner to grant your guild special abilities and plant it on the field of battle
so your fellow guild members can teleport directly to it!
• Fellowships – Get together with a group of your closest friends and start your
own fellowship! You can join in a common chat channel, gain the ability to
create a campfire that can help you in your adventures, and get a token that
will let you quickly travel to your other fellowship members.
• Energeian Items – Utilizing ancient Combine technology, gain access to a new
inventory slot that can be fitted with an Energeian power source and armor that
can tap into the energy held within! The armor gains power based on the type of
energy in the power source, so you can quickly customize the effects of your
armor by changing the power source!

Sony is continuing its transformation into an entertainment powerhouse here at the Consumer Electronics Show with a 100,000 square-foot exhibit that brings together all of the company’s strengths from electronics, music and gaming to movies, television and online entertainment.
In a press conference kicked off by Sony BMG Music Grammy award-winning musician Joshua Bell, several of the company’s U.S. business leaders announced products and technologies related to four strategic growth areas –gaming, high definition, digital imaging and mobile products.
Most notably, Sony Electronics President and Chief Operating Officer Stan Glasgow unveiled the company’s first Internet video system. He announced that in 2007 the majority of new Sony televisions – starting with several BRAVIA™ flat-panel LCD TVs this spring – will accept an attachable module that can stream broadband high-definition and other Internet video content with the press of a remote control button. The module will be available this summer.
“While other companies struggle with standard definition, Sony has developed a scalable Internet HDTV solution with some notable partners providing content,” Glasgow said.
Those partners include AOL, Yahoo! and Grouper, now part of Sony Pictures Entertainment, as well as Sony Pictures itself and Sony BMG. Executives from the first three companies joined Glasgow for a demonstration.
Sony’s Xross Media Bar™ (XMB), an icon-based user interface similar to what is already found on PLAYSTATION®3 (PS3), PlayStation®Portable and a recently introduced Sony A/V receiver, made its debut in conjunction with the Internet video demo.
Glasgow also reported that Sony Electronics enjoyed strong holiday sales in the United States, which have put the company on track for a year of double-digit growth.
PlayStation
Peter Dille, senior vice president of marketing for Sony Computer Entertainment America, demonstrated why PS3 was the darling of the holiday season and announced the company shipped one million units of PS3, equipped with high-definition, Blu-ray disc drives, in the United States by the end of December.
More High Definition
Acknowledging Sony’s leadership in what the company calls “Full HD” across practically every product category in both consumer and professional arenas, Randy Waynick, senior vice president of Sony Electronics’ Home Products Division, highlighted a continuum of HD technology from the lens to the living room.
Waynick previewed a prototype 55-inch SXRD™ Grand WEGA™ rear projection micro-display television with a new laser light engine technology that enhances color uniformity and brightness, while maintaining a slim profile.
He also recounted the success of Sony’s BRAVIA™ flat-panel LCD line, which comprises 16 models ranging in size from 23- to 52-inch screens, before announcing the newest member of the family, a state-of-the-art 70-inch 1080p HD television.
The model features a new backlighting system and contrast ratio enhancements, as well as three HDMI inputs for full 1080p connectivity to the latest Blu-ray Disc™ players. It is also distinguished by its high refresh rate and x.v.Color technology, which is Sony’s name for xvYCC, a new international standard in color technology for personal video applications. x.v.Color ensures vibrant, life-like color reproduction.
Also on view were prototypes of a wall-sized, 82-inch BRAVIA flat-panel LCD and a 27-inch Organic Light Emitting Diode (OLED) display capable of full HD performance in a razor-thin form factor.
To expand the HD story beyond televisions and PlayStation 3, Sony took the wraps off a family of Blu-Ray products, including the new VAIO® XL3 Digital Living System equipped with a BD drive, which is ready to record and store high-definition television programming. Two new Blu-ray players slated to arrive on the market in the months ahead were also previewed.
Behind the Lens
Moving from the enjoyment to the creation of high-quality content, Steve Haber, senior vice president for Sony Electronics’ Personal Mobile and Imaging Division, focused on digital imaging technology. He began by unveiling 16 new Handycam® camcorders – several in high definition – using three different media formats: hard disc drive, DVD and DV tape.
There are four new models using AVCHD technology in the HD camp – two disc-based and two that use HDV tape. The top-of-the-line entries feature Sony’s Clear VID CMOS sensor and Optical Image Stabilization technology for outstanding performance under a variety of lighting conditions. These models also sport a new three-megapixel imager that enhances HD video, as well as still photography.
All of the HD models employ x.v.Color technology, which enables the color data range (known as s-RGB) to be expanded to more closely approximate what the human eye is able to see.
Haber said content captured with one of these camcorders and played back on an x.v.Color-compliant 70-inch BRAVIA television will appear more true-to-life than ever before.
Riding the wave of popularity of user-created content posted on Internet sites, such as Sony’s Grouper, Haber introduced five new hard-disc drive camcorders starting at $600, with recording capacities ranging from 30 to 60GB, as well as advanced data protection systems and 40X optical zoom lenses.
He said Sony has quickly become the market share leader in the hard drive segment of this business in the United States with more than 60 percent of the market.
A new line of DVD standard-definition camcorders for those seeking recording and playback simplicity was also on display, starting at under $500, along with some new Mini-DV models.
Hear, There and Everywhere
Hideyuki Furumi, senior vice president of Sony’s IT Product Division, discussed the company’s commitment to personalization and portability in products that allow consumers to access a variety of entertainment, communication and information without boundaries.
The VAIO UX 390 Premium Micro PC illustrated the point. Now flash-based, the UX series computers weigh about a pound. Furumi said it is the smallest-sized, full-functioning notebook around.
Among other VAIO products making their debut were the WA1 Wireless Digital Music Streamer, which streams music or Internet radio from a PC for playback in virtually any room of a house, and the TP1 Digital Living System, a one-of-a-kind home computer. These spherical, white devices “shatter the notion of what a PC product should look like or where it should reside in your home,” Furumi said.
Sony also has a “backstage” theater in the booth to showcase its entertainment assets and electronics prowess, including live performances by several Sony BMG Music artists like Joshua Bell and Landon Pigg, as well as Sony Pictures high-definition movie previews, speaker panels on topics ranging from electronic books to the HD transition, and informative product demonstrations.
