Digital music sales account for 18 percent of the U.S. music market and that figure will grow to 41 percent in five years, Forrester Research said in a report released on Monday. The report titled "U.S. Music Forecast, 2008 to 2013" also forecast that 55 percent of U.S. online consumers will pay to download digital music in 2013. JupiterResearch, a division of Massachusetts-based independent company Forrester Research, said in the report that growth in digital music sales will not compensate for declining CD sales, with the overall U.S. music market shrinking over the next five years from its current level of $10.2 billion to $9.8 billion. The report also noted crossover between CD and digital music purchases. In a survey, researchers found that 64 percent of subscribers to digital music services and 57 percent of consumers who download music have bought a CD in a store in the past year.

Dead rapper Tupac "2Pac" Shakur, the hip-hop icon who sold more records after he was murdered than during his brief career, is the most overrated person in music, according to music magazine Blender. Shakur tops a tongue-in-cheek list that also includes "places, trends and other junk in rock," Blender said in its upcoming October issue, due on newsstands next week. Other overrated finalists included the Grammys at No. 7, encores at No. 12, Pink Floyd at No. 14 and "the music you loved as a teenager" at No. 23. Shakur, a "gangsta" rapper who showed his sensitive side in movies, was killed during an unsolved drive-by shooting in Las Vegas in 1996. More than a dozen albums have been released in the ensuing years, and his image is almost as ubiquitous as that of Che Guevara or Bob Marley.

In honor of the Olympics, DMX is apparently trying to break some sort of
record. The arrest-addled rapper was busted again Thursday, this time in Miami
on an outstanding warrant for skipping another court date in Arizona related to
his pending animal-cruelty and drug-possession case. Pictures taken by TMZ show
that police nabbed him outside a Wal-Mart this afternoon. Although DMX's
attorney did appear on his client's behalf Tuesday afternoon to provide
documentation that his client couldn't make it because he was hospitalized in
Miami (he wouldn't say why, though), the judge opted to issue a bench warrant
anyway and raised his bond to $25,000.

- Death Row Records, the legendary West Coast hip-hop label that launched such seminal rappers as Snoop Dogg, Tupac Shakur and Dr. Dre to superstardom and made mint at the front of the early '90s gangsta-rap boom, has been auctioned off for a relatively measly $24 million. New York-based Global Music Group released a statement today confirming it was the top bidder at a June 24 auction and had purchased Death Row, including its hits-laden catalog and any outstanding recording contracts, for a relative song. Death Row filed for bankruptcy in April 2006 after company kingpin Marion "Suge" Knight was unable to pay a $107 million judgment to former partners (and former couple) Lydia and Michael Harris, the latter a convicted drug dealer. A Michigan man has sued rapper Eminem, claiming the superstar rapper punched him two years ago while in a bathroom in a detroit strip club. The Detroit News reports Miad Jarbou of Royal Oak filed the lawsuit Thursday in Oakland County Circuit Court seeking more than $25,000 in damages. The suit claims Eminem punched him July 13, 2006, at Cheetah's On the Strip Gentlemen's Club.

The first Arab hip hop community website, Jota Lounge, launched May 15 by Nas
Jota Records, the first Arab hip-hop production label to sign on Arab MC’s.
Nas Jota Records Founder and Producer Ehab Abasaeed notes that “the goal of
creating Jota Lounge is to provide a gateway for all Arab hip hop artists to
promote their music and provide them with a platform to shine amongst other
international hip hop artists.” Jota Lounge will consist of music and portfolios
of videos and songs created by each artist for their profile. Every month, the
artist with the most votes for best song will win a free video shoot. “For the
first three months we will be shooting the videos in the DC area, Virginia,
Maryland, and Washington DC,” Abaseed said. People who register can expect to
find information about these artists, pictures, videos, and events promotion.
“We will also provide fans with exclusive interviews and news about the artists
in the future,” Abasaeed added.

Organizers of one of Britain's best-known music festivals on Tuesday defended their decision to book Jay-Z as their headline act after Oasis songwriter Noel Gallagher blamed the rapper for disappointing ticket sales. The outdoor Glastonbury fest is a cornerstone of Britain's music calendar. But it has yet to sell out this year, in contrast to past years when tickets were snapped up within hours. Gallagher, whose band headlined the festival in 1995 and 2004, said rap was to blame. "If it ain't broke, don't fix it," Gallagher said in an interview, an audio of which was posted to the British Broadcasting Corp.'s Web site Monday. "If you break it, people ain't gonna go. I'm sorry, but Jay-Z? ... No chance." He explained that the inclusion of a hip-hop act went against the festival's tradition of guitar music, adding: "I'm not having hip-hop at Glastonbury. No way. No. It's wrong."

Island Def Jam Music Group (IDJ) and Procter & Gamble’s TAG brand announce the formation of a new hip-hop record label, TAG Records. The new label will be led by hip-hop mogul Jermaine Dupri, who will act as president of the New York-based venture. As president, Dupri will set the creative vision for the label and play an integral part in identifying and developing its musical talent. This is a milestone for the music industry as TAG Record’s artists will be supported with a multi-million dollar marketing effort that is unprecedented for any new artist, including television, print, radio, digital and event marketing. “Today, we make history in the music industry with TAG Records,” said Jermaine Dupri, president of TAG Records. “This label is going to provide new artists with a chance of a lifetime. New artists will receive ten times the typical marketing support – a first in the industry. I’m hand selecting and molding these artists to make history in hip hop.”

Britain is appealing a court's decision to allow Snoop Dogg into the country, the Border Agency said Friday. He was barred from Britain after he was arrested on charges of violent disorder at London's Heathrow Airport in 2006. But the hip-hop heavyweight successfully appealed the ban and received entry clearance from an asylum and immigration tribunal in January. The Border Agency said Friday it would challenge the ruling at a hearing next week.

The rapper was sentenced to three years' informal probation Tuesday after pleading guilty to aggravated trespass and battery stemming from a 2006 domestic violence complaint brought by an ex-girlfriend. Nate, whose real name is Nathaniel Hale, must also complete a batterers' treatment program and refrain from owning a weapon for 10 years, according to TMZ, which first reported the plea deal. The Long Beach, Calif.-bred hip-hop star was charged with misdemeanor aggravated trespass, battery, telephone harassment, dissuading a witness from reporting a crime and violating a restraining order from a previous domestic incident after breaking into the Newport Beach home occupied by his ex-girlfriend, her new boyfriend and the boyfriend's mother.

"Love in This Club" featuring Young Jeezy soared 50 places to No. 1, powered by 198,000 downloads -- the largest first-week sum since Sean Kingston shifted 260,000 downloads last July. The track, Usher's eighth No. 1, is from his new album, "Here I Stand," due in June.

Sony/ATV Music Publishing has signed a worldwide co-publishing agreement with Flo Rida. The deal includes the songwriter-artist's hit single "Low" featuring T-Pain as well as his interest in songs on the upcoming debut album "Mail On Sunday" (Altantic). "Low" is expected to be featured in the upcoming film "Step Up 2 the Streets" (Touchstone Pictures), which opens in February. It is also part of the Atlantic movie soundtrack album.

Usher's 2004 album, "Confessions," has sold 9.4 million copies in the United States, according to Nielsen SoundScan, but tentative release dates keep coming and going for its follow-up, which is now nebulously slated for sometime this year via Jive Records. So what's the holdup? "He has been taking a pretty long time to put it out, but I think he's ready now," says longtime collaborator Jermaine Dupri, who scaled back his contributions to the new album after taking the reins of Island Records' urban music department last February. "The last couple times I've been around (him), you could tell he's got the bug to hurry up and put this record out. He wants to get back out here and give the people that. He's got that itch."

Sony BMG Music Entertainment, the world's second largest music company, will this month become the last of the big four majors to drop copy protection software on music downloads, also known as digital rights management (DRM). Sony BMG, home to artists including Beyonce, Britney Spears and Celine Dion, said on Monday it will launch a gift card service on January 15 called Platinum MusicPass that will feature digital albums from its artists in the MP3 format. The format does not use DRM protection. Fans will be able to buy the digital album cards in stores and download full-length albums from a MusicPass Web site after they type in an identifying number. The cards will be available at U.S. retail outlets such as Best Buy and Target.

As physical CD sales continue their free fall, digital downloads again reached record sales figures for the year. U.S. digital download sales reached an all-time high for the fourth year in a row, culminating with the biggest post-holiday sales week. For Christmas week (December 24-30), shoppers downloaded almost 43 million tracks from various digital music services, according to data from Nielsen SoundScan. That's a 42.5 percent jump over the 30.1 million downloaded in the same week the previous year. For the year, 844.1 million tracks were downloaded digitally, a 45 percent rise over the 581.9 million tally for 2006. Digital albums are up 53.5 percent as well, at 50 million sold, compared with 32.5 million in 2006. Fourth-quarter sales also reached all-time highs, with 231.9 million tracks and 14.2 million albums sold digitally during the period, compared with 163.3 million tracks and 9.8 million albums the year before.

Many of DMX's conversations with God have been a matter of public record since his career bloomed to superstar status in 1998. His catalog features nearly as many inspirational ghetto hymns — such as "Lord Give Me a Sign," "A Minute for Your Son" and "The Prayer" — as it does party anthems and street-corner knockers, and in 2006 he pondered changing his name for "spiritual reasons." But now, the Dog has decided to go in full-throttle with his first-ever gospel-rap album, which he told MTV News will be coming out this year. "I [was] the first n---a to put out two albums in one year [It's Dark and Hell Is Hot and Flesh of My Flesh, Blood of My Blood in 1998], now I'm gonna hit 'em again — drop two albums on the same f---in' day, yo," X said from his home in Arizona on Friday. "A double album will make mutha----as mad, because they gotta spend more money — plus it's already a long [double] album. I'm talking about a hip-hop album and a gospel album." Combined, the project will be called Walk With Me Now and You'll Fly With Me Later.

Pimp C, real name Chad Butler -- and one half of the rap duo UGK, was found dead in a hotel room this morning. He was 33. L.A. County Fire responded to a 911 call at the Mondrian Hotel, located on trendy Sunset Strip in Hollywood. They arrived to his sixth floor hotel room to find him dead in bed.

According to WWL-TV in Louisiana, a mother of two was found gunned down in Algiers home. Family members of a woman shot and killed in her Algiers home t WWL-TV News she is the sister of New Orleans rapper Mannie Fresh. Police said the 41-year-old woman, was identified by family members as Angela Bryant and was found dead in her home in the 1000 block of Farragut Street around 8 a.m. Thursday from an apparent gunshot wound, although police believe she was gunned down sometime late Wednesday evening.

Jay-Z's "American Gangster" Set To Debut At #1 This Week On The Charts
Just five years ago, Sean "Diddy" Combs asked Busta Rhymes to "pass the Courvoisier." These days, it's all about the vodka. The 37-year-old hip-hop mogul has inked a multiyear deal to develop the Ciroc vodka brand - one of Diageo PLC's superpremium lines - for a 50-50 share in the profits. It's the latest agreement in which a celebrity is going beyond the typical endorser role to share in a brand's rise and fall, such as Jay-Z with Budweiser and 50 Cent with Vitamin Water. Diageo said the agreement could be worth more than $100 million for Combs over the course of the deal, depending on how well the brand performs.

Sales of 50 Cent's new album have been bested by those of his rap rival, Kanye West, but it's going to take more than marketing to kill this hip-hop king from Queens. Tuesday, he hits town with his latest venture, an intimate, illustrated autobiography that traces his climb from the street to the top of the charts.While his albums are packed with the bluster he says is "just the confidence necessary to exist in hip hop," this memoir sets Fitty apart. Starting with unrepentant tales of his early days in his first business, narcotics, the rapper, born Curtis Jackson, and a writer pal, Noah Callahan-Bever of Complex magazine, paint an unembellished picture of the years he spent pulling himself out of the troubled beginnings that gave him his material. "50 x 50: 50 Cent in His Own Words" is structured as a personal scrapbook that tells his story in photographs - including some seriously cute shots of a chubby-cheeked tyke in Queens.

In a moving tribute to her son, Ms. Voletta Wallace will unveil a wax figure of the legendary Biggie Smalls (born: Christopher Wallace) on Thursday, October 25th at 11:00 a.m. at Madame Tussauds New York, 234 West 42nd St. (b/w 7th & 8th Aves.), Manhattan. After the figure is unveiled, 23 high school students from Brooklyn - where Biggie was born and raised - will honor him by singing "I'll Be Missing You," a tribute song released shortly after Biggie's death, and gospel song, "I'll Fly Away." The students are members of the Brooklyn High School of the Arts' choir. Biggie's figure dons a white three-piece suit, white hat and white shoes and is standing with one hand in its pocket and the other hand resting on a gold and wood cane. Madame Tussauds' studio artists studied hundreds of photos and hours of video footage of Biggie to create the figure and to ensure that they captured Biggie's spirit and demeanor, as well as his physical likeness.

ATLANTA - Federal agents arrested Grammy-winning rapper T.I. on Saturday on charges of buying illegal machine guns, hours before he was due to star at a major hip hop awards ceremony. Agents from the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) said they arrested the rapper at his home in southwest Atlanta as he took delivery of three machine guns and two silencers. "This convicted felon allegedly was trying to add several machine guns to an already large and entirely illegal arsenal of guns," David E. Nahmias, U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Georgia, said in a statement. "Thanks to the good and quick work of ATF, he is now in custody and his firearms have been seized," Nahmias said. T.I. was convicted of a violation of the Georgia Controlled Substances Act in 1998 and given seven years probation, the Department of Justice said. It is a federal offense for a convicted felon to purchase firearms on their behalf, Justice said. T.I., born Clifford Harris, was arrested at 2.30 p.m. EDT , the day he was due to perform at the BET Networks awards ceremony in Atlanta.

On the October 10 broadcast of his nationally syndicated Fox News Radio show, while discussing 14-year-old Asa H. Coon, who earlier that day shot four people at his Cleveland high school before killing himself, Fox News host John Gibson asserted that "because the school is very heavily African-American, I did leap to a conclusion" that "the shooter might have been African-American." Gibson went on to say that he "knew this was not a classic hip-hop shooting" once he learned Coon killed himself. Gibson continued: "Hip-hoppers do not kill themselves. They walk away. Now, I didn't need to hear the kid was white with blond hair. Once he'd shot himself in the head, no hip-hopper." Gibson later stated, "I know the shooter was white. I knew it as soon as he shot himself. Hip-hoppers don't do that. They shoot and move on to shoot again." Gibson added: "I know there's a few of you who want to call me racist. But when you do, remind -- let me remind you, African-Americans are dying in major cities because people won't face this problem."

According to Billboard.biz, twelve jurors in Minnesota decided unanimously this afternoon that single mother Jammie Thomas is liable for infringing 24 recordings she shared over peer-to-peer service Kazaa. The verdict for $222,000 came in the first trial held in a suit filed against a consumer by major labels for P2P filesharing. "We welcome the jury's decision," the RIAA said in a statement. "The law here is clear, as are the consequences for breaking it. As with all our cases, we seek to resolve them quickly in a fair and reasonable manner. When the evidence is clear, we will continue to bring legal actions against those individuals who have broken the law. This program is important to securing a level playing field for legal online music services and helping ensure that record companies are able to invest in new bands of tomorrow."
