This Christmas
Synopsis
Lights twinkle all around
But your eyes outshine the town
They do, this Christmas
For the first time in four years, the entire Whitfield clan is assembled for Christmas at the L.A. home of the family matriarch, affectionately known as Ma’ Dere (Loretta Devine). Ma’ Dere’s three sons and three daughters have come from all over the country for an emotional reunion that promises to be as dramatic, contentious and hilarious as it is heartwarming. As family finances cause sparks to fly, long simmering disputes boil over and closely held secrets are revealed, the rare gathering also draws the Whitfields closer together to celebrate their most unforgettable holiday yet.
With enough holiday cheer to light a thousand Christmas trees, This Christmas is destined to become a yuletide classic. A poignant drama laced with laughter, music and suspense, the film tells the story of a family that is at once utterly unique and surprisingly universal. The remarkable ensemble cast features Delroy Lindo (The Cider House Rules), Idris Elba (“The Wire” ), Loretta Devine (Dreamgirls, “Grey’s Anatomy”), Chris Brown (Stomp the Yard), Keith Robinson (Dreamgirls), Laz Alonso (Stomp the Yard), Columbus Short (Stomp The Yard), Sharon Leal (Dreamgirls, Tyler Perry’s Why Did I Get Married), Lauren London (ATL, “Entourage”), Mekhi Phifer (8 Mile, “ER”) and Regina King (Ray, Jerry McGuire). Preston A. Whitmore II (The Walking Dead, Crossover) wrote and directed the film and also produced along with Will Packer. Executive producers are Mekhi Phifer, Ronnie Warner, Paddy Cullen, Damon Lee and Delroy Lindo.
Christmas has always been an elaborate production at the Whitfield home, and this year is no exception. With her grown children and their significant others all present for the first time in years, Shirley “Ma’ Dere” Whitfield (Loretta Devine) is in her element. Stockings have been hung, cookies have been baked…and old resentments are starting to bubble up.
Oldest daughter Lisa (Regina King), also known as Sister, is trying to convince the rest of the family to sell the dry cleaning business their mother has run for years so her overly-ambitious husband Malcolm (Laz Alonso) will have the capital he needs to close an important business deal. Her sister Kelli (Sharon Leal), a high-powered business woman, is dead set against doing anything Malcolm wants. Youngest daughter Mel (Lauren London) is home from college and primarily interested in finding a private place to canoodle with her latest beau, Devean (Keith Robinson).
Ma’ Dere’s son Claude (Columbus Short), an active duty Marine, arrives with some unexpected news while his younger brother Baby (Chris Brown) has a surprise of his own for the family. When estranged eldest son Quentin (Idris Elba), a jazz musician, makes a surprise appearance, he neglects to tell the family he’s on the run from his gambling debts.
Despite her extensive preparations, Ma’ Dere’s plans for a cozy holiday soon begin to evaporate. When the siblings head out to an L.A. nightclub for some fun, an off color remark by another patron sparks a fight and Claude ends up in jail. Later, Kelli spends the night with Gerald (Mekhi Phifer), a handsome fireman she meets at the club, Malcolm flies to New York on a last-minute “business trip” and a pair of thugs comes looking for Quentin with mayhem on their minds. Meanwhile, Ma’ Dere is harboring some secrets of her own, such as the full extent of her relationship with longtime boyfriend Joseph Black (Delroy Lindo).
With their holiday seemingly on a collision course with disaster, it will take all the humor, heart and love the Whitfields can muster to survive This Christmas.
About the Production
And as we trim the tree
How much fun it's gonna be together
This Christmas
“If I never made another movie again, I would be happy I made this one,” says filmmaker Preston A. Whitmore II. Having written, directed or produced a half-dozen feature films and worked on a successful television series, Whitmore says This Christmas is by far the closest to his heart of any project he has ever tackled.
“All the characters in this movie are near and dear to me, because they represent different phases and elements of my life,” Whitmore explains. “Quentin is the section of my life when I first came to Southern California. Columbus Short's character, Claude, is another section of my life, when I was in the Marine Corps. Baby is a section of my life, only in my dream world, because I could never sing as well as Chris Brown, but I do like to dream that I could!”
However, Whitmore says the character that resonates most strongly for him is family matriarch Ma’ Dere, played by Loretta Devine. “She reminds me of my mother. Having lost my mom a couple years ago, it has given me some comfort to create this character and, in a way, see her live again.”
Over the few days leading up to Christmas, the Whitfield clan is tested, scandalized, humbled and ultimately rewarded by their love for each other. Old rivalries are played out and secrets revealed as they reunite for the holiday at the family homestead.
“It's a universal story,” says producer Will Packer. “There’s nothing uniquely African-American about it. It's a story about a mother who raises six kids who all leave the nest and go very different ways but come back together as a family. At the end of the day it's through their hope and faith in the strength of the family that they persevere through some real challenges.”
Whitmore says his goal while writing this script was to make sure that every character had his or her own story arc. “There's something for everyone in this picture. We have drama. We have action—a lot of which revolves around Idris Elba's character, Quentin, the oldest son. We also have comedy, which revolves around the relationships between the sisters, as well as their relationships with men outside the family.”
Actor Columbus Short, who plays Claude, notes, “Every single character in the film has a secret. I have the biggest secret of all; two secrets, in fact. There's a twist every two or three pages. A new bomb drops. It's suspense-filled, for sure.”
But the suspense is sweetened with a liberal dose of laughter, notes Whitmore. “I think whenever you look at drama, real drama, there's a certain amount of comedy in it. That's true to what happens to anybody when they deal with siblings in their family. At the moment it seems really dramatic, but then you sit down and think about it a couple of days later and it seems hilarious.”
“It is such a true slice of life,” Packer adds. “A lot of times siblings, because they grow up in the same household, have to kind of get along, even if they don’t really like each other. But then when you're adults, it forces you to deal with the relationship in a very different way because now there's nothing that says you have to relate to this person or like them or even love them.
Ronnie Warner, an executive producer and actor in the film, says that by tapping into his personal experience, Whitmore has recreated a universal experience. “We seem to concentrate a lot in American culture on the idea of diversity,” says the former stand-up comedian. “But that’s not what this film is about. There are common threads that run through all of us. We all have issues in our families. We all cry over the same things and we laugh over the same things. So it's really about finding that common denominator. And this is what makes it so good. It's just real.”
Warner came to the project along with Mekhi Phifer, who stars and executive produces, and producer Will Packer. “Mekhi and I had done a movie before with Screen Gems, and Will Packer produced it with us,” he says. “We also had a relationship with Preston and he had this movie coming up. He specifically wanted Mekhi to play the role of Gerald. Because we had done some business before, Preston, Will, myself and Mehki saw the opportunity to come together and continue this collaboration.”
Warner says he was attracted to the project by the richness of the script and its unique, interweaving storylines. “It is a special movie. As an African-American, I don’t feel I’ve ever seen this movie before. Anyone, no matter what background they're from, will find this film interesting, or entertaining or thought-provoking, because it touches on issues that happen in every American family.”
About the casting
Hang all the mistletoe
I'm gonna get to know you better
This Christmas
When it came to casting This Christmas, Director Whitmore was thrilled with the extraordinary group of veterans and newcomers he was able to assemble to play the Whitfield family. “Actors just sort of flocked to the picture, and we had no problem casting it at all. This cast has been a joy to work with, and I learned something from each and every last one of them everyday.”
Mekhi Phifer, who stars on NBC’s medical drama “ER,” was the first actor cast as well as one of the film’s executive producers. He plays Gerald, a firefighter who falls for the independent middle daughter, Kelli Whitfield. “Kelli, played by Sharon Leal, who was in Dreamgirls, and Gerald have this love relationship that reaches a sort of Cinderella point,” says Whitmore. “I liken it to Pretty Woman, when Richard Gere came up the fire escape for Julia Roberts. Gerald shows up at the front door saying what he needs to say to cement the possibility of them having an ongoing relationship in the future. And it just downright makes you feel good and giddy.”
Loretta Devine, a distinguished stage, screen and television actress, plays Shirley Whitfield, known to her children as Ma’ Dere. The matriarch of a sprawling and often difficult family, Ma’ Dere provides the glue that holds them all together.
“Loretta is an incredible woman,” says Whitmore. “She makes you feel happy the moment she smiles at you, and I think that's one of the biggest contributions she makes to the role. Ma’ Dere puts on a smiling face and doesn't let anything get her down, no matter what.”
Executive Producer Paddy Cullen says she doesn’t believe anyone else could have played the part as well as Devine. “She's so perfect for it. She’s got such a sweet face, and those dimples—she's just adorable.”
Packer concurs: “I'm so honored that she signed on to this project. When she's on set I just want to watch her. I want to watch her walk around. I want to watch her go to craft service. And, of course, I want to watch her in front of the camera. She's just beautiful, she's perfect. And when she speaks her lines, she doesn't talk, she sings.”
Devine’s reputation, and that of Delroy Lindo who plays her devoted boyfriend Joseph Black, were draws for other actors, as well. “Loretta Devine and Delroy Lindo were the top reasons I came onto this,” says Regina King, who plays eldest daughter Lisa in the film. “I just think she's awesome in everything that she does. She just has such a great spirit and I've always wanted to work with her.”
Whitmore knew just the actor he needed for the pivotal role of Baby, the youngest Whitmore. “We sat down and wrote this role specifically for Chris Brown, because that's the guy I wanted.”
Eighteen-year-old Brown is an international superstar in the music world, but This Christmas is only his second film role. “Everybody knows that Chris Brown is an incredible singer,” says Whitmore. “But I think one of the things that people aren't aware of is that he is also a very good actor. Unlike some singers or rappers who want to undertake this but don't get serious about it, he's done everything necessary to become a good actor. His performance of ‘Try A Little Tenderness’ will just take your breath away, but he also does some dramatic scenes with Loretta Devine that are just going to stop you in your tracks.”
Devine admits a bit sheepishly that Chris Brown was not on her radar screen until she worked with him. “I tried to do my homework before I started this and I Googled everybody so I would have some insight into all of the other actors,” she says. “I couldn't find Chris Brown anywhere, because I was looking in the wrong places. He turns out to be this incredibly famous young man whose records I've been dancing to!”
Brown’s character Baby aspires to be a singer, but is afraid to tell his mother because she has already lost her musician husband and eldest son to the road. Brown says his own family experience was completely different.
“My family loved the fact that I followed my dream and became a singer. They already knew I was a show-off at parties and dinners and stuff. I danced a lot and I sang. But that was just singing in the country. When they saw that I got my break, they were really proud of me and gave God a lot of glory for giving me the best. I know I did!”
For producer Packer, casting This Christmas was an opportunity to once again tap the talents of three young, charismatic stars who helped his previous production, the 2007 Screen Gems’ hit Stomp the Yard, reach box office success. “I'm fortunate to be able to work with Columbus Short, Chris Brown and Laz Alonzo again,” says Packer. “They are each phenomenal and are really stars to watch.”
The filmmakers never considered anyone other than veteran actor Delroy Lindo for the role of Joseph Black, the loyal and stoic man in Ma’ Dere’s life. “Any direction you give him, if you want him to smile or laugh or frown or be angry in any particular scene, all you have to do is tell him, hey, I need this here, or I need this on this line,” says Whitmore. “And he will deliver it.”
Like many of the characters, Joseph Black is modeled on a real person. “A guy that my mother dated, who for all purposes, was my stepfather and his name is actually Joseph Black,” says Whitmore. “Delroy and I had many conversations about Joe, and he just embraced all those things and brought him to life.”
Regina King's character Lisa, a.k.a. Sister, is actually modeled after Whitmore’s older sister, Kimberly. “She was bossy and sort of told me what to do as a kid,” he remembers. “One of the things we really want to express with her character is that if a situation isn't good for you, whatever age you are or how many children you have, you got to say, hey, I’ve got to let this go and find a better way for myself.”
“Lisa is probably the first character in a while that I've played that is actually my age, you know, thirty-five, thirty-six years old,” says King. “I think when you hit that age in life, pretenses and all the other layers that you put up to not show the real you start to kind of fall away. One of the things that Sister teaches people throughout her journey is that, hey, you can take that step. You can make a change in your life, and improve the quality of your life.”
Whitmore based Claude, the middle son, played by Columbus Short, on himself when he was in the Marine Corps. “I went in when I was 18 and got out when I was 21. He represents a younger, more disciplined Preston Whitmore. A very patriotic person and a good guy.”
Short, already an accomplished dancer and the star of Stomp the Yard and “Studio 60,” was particularly interested in the role because it gave him an opportunity to show the world what he could do as an actor.
“I signed on to play a three-dimensional character,” says the actor. “Claude is a very poised, calm, cool, and collected guy, but with a short fuse. And that's how a lot of Marines are. Preston was a Marine, and this whole movie is basically Preston's family story. We have somebody at the helm who knows exactly how to keep the authenticity of it.”
The oldest character in the film, and one that figures prominently in almost every scene, is the family homestead itself. “One of the things we set out to do is to make the Whitfield house a character in the picture,” says Whitmore. “We wanted to showcase Victoria Park, a Los Angeles neighborhood with a lot of majestic houses, very similar to Hancock Park. It’s a middle class African-American environment in Southern California, and we're shooting in one of these houses.
“We also wanted a house that was aged to a certain degree, but had this dignified, stately manner about it, a house that felt like it had history. This house feels like it's lived in, but it has an elegance to it that you don’t often see, and these very beautiful hardwood floors.”
Actress Lauren London, who plays Mel, the youngest Whitfield sister, grew up in Los Angeles, but she had never been to Victoria Park. “I didn't even know it existed,” says the actress. “The houses are really old-fashioned. They're huge, and they feel like old money. This house just seems real warm and cozy, like kids have grown up there. It feels like someone once fell down the stairs and broke a leg, or someone had their first cooking lesson in the kitchen.”
More than just wood and nails, a house takes on the quality of the family that lives in it, says Short. “A house is not a home unless there's love there,” he says. “And that's the through line of this film, that this family genuinely cares about one another. The house is base camp, where everybody comes back to, and wants to be and not miss out on Christmas.”
Along with the Whitfield home, the filmmakers chose such quintessential and recognizable Los Angeles landmarks as the El Rey Theatre on Wilshire Blvd. and the downtown Union Station train terminal to shoot key scenes in the movie. Producer Will Packer notes that the film’s Southern California location sets it apart from the vast majority of holiday films.
“You very rarely see a film about holidays in Los Angeles,” he says. “Traditionally, when we think of Christmastime we think of snow, we think of back East, not palm trees and sun. So I was really interested and intrigued by the challenge of authentically and accurately portraying Los Angeles during the Christmas season.”
Christmas with the Whitfields
Presents and cards are here
My world is filled with cheer and you
This Christmas
The concept of coming home for Christmas is a very real and emotional idea for members of the cast of This Christmas, who hail from all over the U.S. as well as from Cuba and the U.K.
“Everybody's on a different path and we’ve spread out across the country,” says Short of his own family, who are Kansas City natives. “In real life, families tend to regroup during the holidays. When you go home, especially living in Hollywood, you're like, this is my real family and these are the people who genuinely care for me. There's that center ground that the Whitfield home represents that we all want to come back to.”
Speaking of her big-hearted character, Loretta Divine observes, “Ma’ Dere is a woman that really loves Christmas. I think she plans for Christmas almost all year-round, for the amount of decoration she puts up and how much effort she puts in putting everything together. Everybody tries to get home. That week on up through New Year's is probably one of the major events and has become a great tradition for this family. And she really loves it when all of her kids are home.”
Whitmore chose to set his story around the holidays because it is a shared experience for so many families. “But most people have never seen really seen a California Christmas,” he says. “I think people don't think we have Christmas out here. It’s no different from Christmas any other place, other than the fact that we can go skiing in the mountains or we can go to the beach.”
Columbus Short has mixed feelings about Christmas in balmy Southern California. “When I was in Kansas City it could be below freezing, with blizzards. There's something about that white Christmas that really feels like Christmas. But when you're in LA, it's very different. Our cast moved down here from Philly and New York and Virginia, and Oklahoma. They were saying, wow, it's seventy degrees outside and it's Christmas Eve.”
As it does in most cultures, food plays an elemental role during the holidays for the Whitfields. “When you're doing a black film, you try to stay away from some stereotypes,” says actress Regina King. “But you cannot do a black Christmas film and not have it be all about food. It just wouldn't be a true black Christmas film.”
Chris Brown concurs: “The number one thing that people do is eat. I think, as a family, people feel better on a full stomach. During the holidays, my family cooks, everybody eats and everybody comes together to have the turkey, yams, mashed potatoes, greens, everything. It just brings all of us together, eating and having a great time and expressing our love.”
But that’s not to say just any old food will do. “Food is important with any family but in a black family it’s like, “Who's cooking?,” laughs Short. “Who cooked the macaroni and cheese? I don't eat everybody's mac and cheese. Did Bear cook the mac and cheese? Uncle Randy cooked the greens? Okay, I'm not going to be able to eat the greens.”
Laz Alonso, who plays Lisa’s ambitious, scheming husband Malcolm, comes from a family that emigrated from Cuba. He says that “soul food” is an essential part of the experience of any African coming to America. “It’s something that is so much of a staple in the African-American home. My family adopted it as part of the African-American, or the African in America experience,” Alonso said. “We'll still have our black beans and rice, but you gotta believe we’ve got macaroni and cheese!”
The amount of food used in the film required the production to set up a working kitchen right on set. “We have twelve people at the dining room table and it's just constant food, and Ma’ Dere is always cooking,” says executive producer Cullen.
Whitmore says his own mother could only cook while on the phone with his grandmother. “Back then we had the long telephone cords, so it'd be stretched from one room to another, and she'd be over the stove doing the recipe. So she learned to cook via phone on a Sunday through my grandmother.”
A World of Music
The fireside is blazing bright
We're caroling through the night
And this Christmas will be
A very special Christmas for me
While writing the script for This Christmas, Preston Whitmore thought a lot about his fondest Christmas memories. “Donny Hathaway's song, This Christmas, came right to my mind. And I said, that's what I'm going to call this movie. I don't care where you are or what you're doing, when you hear the chorus, it brings back memories. There's nobody that hasn't heard this song. And the studio actually owned it and was accommodating about putting it in the movie.”
Music is a theme that is woven throughout the film. The absent Mr. Whitfield has abandoned his family to become a professional musician. Quentin, the eldest son, plays the saxophone for a living and Baby wants to launch a singing career, but is afraid to tell his mother.
Regina King believes the film’s emphasis on music hits just the right chord, so to speak. “I don't know a black person who's grown up where music did not play a big part in their household,” she says. “And not necessarily always R&B. It could be jazz, it could be blues, a combination of all three. But music is huge in every black family's home.”
Lauren London agrees. “Music is really big in black culture, period. I know in my family, if we have a hard time, I’ll put on some music and we’ll sing about it.”
Each of the songs featured in This Christmas were chosen because they underscore the idea of family. Executive Producer Paddy Cullen remembers a discussion about one of the songs for the scene in which the family does a ‘Soul Train’ style line dance in their living room. “We wanted it to be something old school that everyone could relate to, from Ma’ Dere to the grandkids. That’s something a lot families have, a song that's been in their family forever.”
With a vocalist as talented as Chris Brown in the cast, it was inevitable that he would contribute a song or two to the film. “This Christmas” was an obvious choice, and Whitmore chose another classic, “Try a Little Tenderness,” to showcase the young performer’s voice. But attempting a song that R&B great Otis Redding made his trademark, as well as Donny Hathaway’s classic holiday tune, was no mean feat. “You're talking about legends,” says Whitmore. “Listening to him doing those songs, I think this kid eventually will become a legend himself.”
“I wasn't too familiar with the song,” admits the teenaged Brown of “Try A Little Tenderness.” “I know Sam Cooke sang it, and a lot of other different people, too. I probably heard it a couple of times, but I didn't really know what it was. Hopefully, I'm doing justice to all the veterans who've done this song, as well as to ‘This Christmas.’”
Brown is characteristically modest about his performance of the two classic songs. “At the end of the movie, I sing “This Christmas,” he says. “I tried to add my own flavor to the music side of things, and tried to bring it with the old school. I really wanted to change it up a little bit, but still keep that soulful essence.”
Whitmore was suitably impressed with his young star’s musical talents. “I saw him at a concert, and I swear to God, it was like seeing the Beatles. The little girls were just going bananas. I haven't seen anybody do what he does, probably, since Michael Jackson. And we all know that Michael Jackson is the King of Pop.
“When Baby sings `This Christmas’ at the end of the film in church, in this elegant setting, it’s going to be nostalgic for a lot of people who are familiar with the Donny Hathaway song,” adds Whitmore. “And it's going to introduce an entirely new, younger audience to the song.”
Near the film’s climax, gospel singer DeNetria Champ delivers a rousing version of “O Holy Night” to a packed church. “She was so powerful,” recalls producer Packer, “that when we recorded that scene, everybody on the set was blown away. I mean the third grip from the back dropped his C-stand and was like, ‘You sing it, sister!’ It was just one of those moments. I really like the fact that we were able to have that song juxtaposed against a classic like ‘This Christmas’”
In the end, Whitmore says, the ultimate goal of This Christmas is to entertain audiences of all backgrounds. “We want people to go away feeling good about This Christmas. We hope that people are going to relate to it, no matter what nationality they are or what sort of origin they come from. People will identify with the characters in this picture, because you either are related to one of them, know one of them or are one of them.”
Brown is confident that Whitmore has achieved his ambition. “When this movie comes out, I think everybody's going to be happy to go home and sit with their family and eat and have fun and just love one another. They’ll be thinking I'm Baby, or I'm Claude, or maybe Kelli. They're going to identify with somebody.”

In addition, Miller has produced albums for such artists as Al Jarreau, the Crusaders, Chaka Khan, Take 6, Wayne Shorter and Kenny Garrett, among others.
After spending many years as a producer and session musician, Miller focused on his solo career in late 1993 with the release of The Sun Don’t Lie. 1995’s Tales found Miller re-imagining the landscape of Black music and its evolution over the past three decades. He released a live album, Live and More in 1997 and next debuted his first release of the new millennium, M2.
For the past several years, Miller has also turned his attention to film scoring, composing for House Party (Martin Lawrence), Boomerang (Eddie Murphy), Siesta (Ellen Barkin), Ladies Man (Tim Meadows), Two Can Play That Game (Vivica A. Fox), and The Brothers (Morris Chestnut and D.L. Hughley). He wrote and produced the hit song, “Da Butt” for Spike Lee’s School Daze soundtrack.
“Me recuerda a mi madre.
Voy a conocerte mejor
No serÌa legÌtimo”.
“Y no necesariamente R&B.
