Warner Home Video Breaks Another High Definition Record with ``300,'' the Fastest Selling Title with More Than 250K Copies Sold in Its First Full Week
Aug. 7, 2007 Today Warner Home Video (WHV) announced that it has the fastest and highest-selling high definition title in the market with the epic action-adventure, "300." Since July 31, 2007, "300" has sold more than 250,000 copies to consumers on HD DVD and Blu-ray Disc.
"300" provides another high definition milestone for Warner Home Video which was the first studio to break the 100K sold mark with "The Departed." Overall WHV has six of the top 10 selling high definition titles with "300," "The Departed," "Superman Returns," "Planet Earth - The Complete Collection," "Batman Begins," and "Happy Feet." Warner also has the highest grossing high definition title with the dual-format release of "Planet Earth."
"'300' is an amazing film, and the high definition sales we are seeing underscores the positive business benefits of supporting both HD DVD and Blu-ray," said Ron Sanders, President of Warner Home Video. "This phenomenal response to '300' is the latest proof that our approach makes the most sense in today's market and has enabled Warner Home Video to continue to lead the market in high definition sales."
As a result of its dual format strategy, WHV has more than 30% market share of DVD sales in the high definition market, selling more high definition product and releasing more titles than any other studio. Because of two competing high definition formats in the market, it is widely recognized that hardware prices for both Blu-ray Disc and HD DVD have fallen faster than would normally be expected at this stage in the product cycle. However, research organizations, such as ABI Research(a), predict that further price reductions of hardware are needed to fuel mass adoption of high definition formats.
Based on the stylized graphic novel from icon Frank Miller ("Sin City"), "300" is an epic action-adventure about the 300 Spartan warriors led by the heroic King Leonidas who challenged Xerxes and his massive Persian army at the ancient Battle of Thermopylae. Leveraging the capabilities that the high definition formats enable, "300" on HD DVD incorporates exclusives interactive features. Any HD DVD player connected to the internet can take advantage of the web enabled features, which include the ability for viewers to pick their favorite scenes to assemble montages and share them with friends. Users can also rate scenes within the Warner connected community as well as purchase and collect wall paper and ring tones for mobile phones. Both Blu-ray Disc and HD DVD formats include additional bonus material.
Warner Home Video HD DVD and Blu-ray Discs offer resolution six times higher than standard definition DVDs, as well as extraordinarily vibrant contrast and color and beautifully crisp sound. The new formats also provide a higher level of interactivity, with instant access to extra features via a seamless menu-bar where viewers can enjoy features without leaving or interrupting the film.
With operations in 90 international territories, Warner Home Video, a Warner Bros. Entertainment Company, commands the largest distribution infrastructure in the global video marketplace. Warner Home Video's film library is the largest of any studio, offering top quality new and vintage titles from the repertoires of Warner Bros. Pictures, Turner Entertainment, Castle Rock Entertainment, HBO Home Video and New Line Home Entertainment.
(a) ABI Research, January 2007, "There will be downward pressure on prices for players of all types: ABI Research believes that prices will have to drop below $200 before true mass adoption takes off."
Warner Home Video First to Break the 100K Sold Mark in High Definition Titles with ''The Departed''
Warner Home Video Leads the High Definition Disc Market with Two of the Top-Selling HD DVD and Blu-Ray Disc Titles
Today Warner Home Video (WHV) announced that it is the first studio to surpass sales of 100,000 copies of a high definition title with Martin Scorsese's 2006 Academy Award(R) Best Picture winner, "The Departed".
With the number one and two highest selling titles on high definition formats - "The Departed" and "Superman Returns" - as well as three other titles in the top ten, ("Batman Begins", "Happy Feet" and "Goodfellas") Warner Home Video continues to be the market share leader in high definition disc sales.
"It's no accident that Warner is the first studio to reach this benchmark. We owe this success to a combination of great content and our decision to support both high definition formats," said Ron Sanders, President of Warner Home Video. "By releasing titles on HD DVD and Blu-ray, Warner Home Video not only increases our potential audience reach, but also offers consumers assurance that regardless of the format they choose they can enjoy our movies."
With more than 30-percent market share of DVD sales in the high definition market, Warner Home Video has sold more high definition product and released more titles than any other studio. WHV's support of HD DVD and Blu-ray Disc allows consumers to watch the Studio's award-winning entertainment on any high definition home viewing device or player they choose.
"High definition media represents an incredible opportunity for the industry, and we, as content providers, can help push mainstream adoption by producing in both formats and giving the consumer a simple choice," continued Sanders. "At a time when the home video business is flat and high definition media presents our best hope for near term growth, it is unfortunate that we as an industry continue to perpetuate consumer confusion."
The winner of four Academy Awards(R) including Picture of the Year and Best Director (Martin Scorsese), "The Departed" features powerful performances from an all-star cast including three-time Academy Award(R) winner Jack Nicholson ("A Few Good Men", "As Good As It Gets"), two-time Academy Award(R) nominee Leonardo DiCaprio ("Blood Diamond", "The Aviator", "Gangs of New York"), Academy Award(R) winner Matt Damon ("Good Will Hunting", "Ocean's Eleven", "Ocean's Twelve") and Mark Wahlberg ("The Italian Job", "Boogie Nights").

Linkin Park, Michael Bublé, and Wilco Dominate the Top Five on Soundscan Chart This Week, Pushing Label to Top Sales Slot for the Year
BURBANK, CA -- (MARKET WIRE) -- May 24, 2007 -- Thanks to chart-topping sales by Linkin Park and Michael Bublé, Top 10 debuts by Neil Young, Arctic Monkeys, and Ashley Tisdale, and continued success of albums by Josh Groban, Red Hot Chili Peppers, and My Chemical Romance, Warner Bros. Records has taken over as the Number One label in overall market share for 2007.
This week, Linkin Park's new album, "Minutes to Midnight," debuted at Number 1, selling 622,827 copies, the biggest first-week sales of any artist in 2007. "Minutes to Midnight" replaced Michael Bublé's "Call Me Irresponsible" at Number 1 on the Soundscan Top 200 album chart. "Call Me Irresponsible" is currently Number 3, followed by Wilco's "Sky Blue Sky" (released on Nonesuch Records, a division of Warner Bros.), which debuted at Number 4 -- the highest-charting album of the band's career. Warner Bros. Records has a 19.11 percent share of current album sales for the week, nearly one out of five current albums sold in the U.S. In addition, Warner Bros. has dominated digital track sales this year and is currently the Number 1 digital label for both albums and tracks.
"Minutes to Midnight" is the third Number 1 debut for Linkin Park. The album is already platinum internationally, with 1.56 million copies sold around the world and Number 1 debuts in 22 countries, including the UK, Canada, and Japan. "Call me Irresponsible" is Bublé's first Number 1 album. With 445,430 copies sold in just three weeks, it is on track to become his third multi-platinum album. "Call Me Irresponsible" also claimed the top spot in seven countries, including Germany, Australia, and Bublé's native Canada. Wilco's fourth album for Nonesuch, "Sky Blue Sky," sold 87,342 copies this week, a first-week career high for the critically acclaimed Chicago rock band in the U.S.
Warner Bros. Records' Number 1 status speaks to the breadth of the label's roster, which in addition to Linkin Park, Bublé, Groban, Chili Peppers, and My Chemical Romance, also include charted albums by country artists Blake Shelton and The Wreckers, emerging alt-rock singer-songwriter Regina Spektor, career rockers Stevie Nicks, Madonna, Green Day and Neil Young, comedy superstar Larry the Cable Guy, and soundtracks for award-winning box office smash films "The Departed" and "Spider-Man 3."
Coming this summer, Warner Bros. Records will release albums by The White Stripes, Mike Jones, Smashing Pumpkins, Big & Rich, Faith Hill, Paul Simon, as well as "Instant Karma: The Amnesty International Campaign to Save Darfur," a collection of iconic songs by John Lennon recorded by Green Day, U2, and R.E.M., among others.

Jones Soon to Launch New Skits "The American Hater"
-- Platinum-selling rap star Mike Jones' sophomore debut "The American Dream" will now be released on July 10, 2007 instead of the original date of May 8, 2007.
The hip hop marketing genius has also set up an "Ask Mike Jones" email address where fans can reach out to him directly with whatever questions or comments their hearts' desire at AskMikeJones@gmail.com. Jones promises to personally answer all of his fans' emails.
"Because I received so many calls on 281.330.8004 there were many times where my friends (fans) couldn't get through. With the email address it will be much easier for me to communicate with them because I receive emails from that address on my BlackBerry that is always with me," states Mike Jones.
Mike Jones is also set to release a hilarious set of skits to help set up the release of his new CD called "The American Hater," where comedian Alex Thomas plays a rapper called Money $tack$ who has nothing but hate to spew on Mr. Jones.
In 2004 with the release of his debut CD, "Who Is Mike Jones?," the Houston rapper changed the playing field in hip hop by using a new and innovative method of self-promotion that skyrocketed his debut to double platinum status. With his colleagues Slim Thug and Paul Wall on the hit single "Still Tippin'," Jones was able to bring the culture of Houston to the lime light with its candy paint, slowed down beats and flashy grills.
"My 64," featuring Snoop Dogg, the current single from "The American Dream," was one of the most added singles at radio the week of its add week and is growing at a steady pace. The video for "My 64" is a tribute to Eazy-E and features his son, Lil' Eazy-E along with Snoop, in the clip.
Here is what radio stations across the nation are saying about "My 64":
"I love the new Mike Jones single, 'My 64,' it's a hot joint for the streets." -- Barbara A. McDowell: Music Director WPWX, Power 92 Chicago
"The West Coast meets the South, instantly recognizable! I love that Lil' Eazy-E is in the video!" -- Robert Scorpio: Program Director, 93.5 KDAY Los Angeles
"Mike Jones is still tippin' on this one. 'My 64' puts you right on the strip in the middle of Summer, turning heads with Mike Jones blasting out the speakers." -- Paul "PStew" Stewart: Music Director/Creative Services WKYS Radio Station, Washington, DC
Check out Mike Jones as he premieres his new video for "My 64" on May 18th on BET "106 and Park." He also has an appearance on MTV's "Sucker Free" on May 16th and will perform on "My Super Sweet Sixteen," which airs on July 9th.

Talib Kweli to Release New Album -- "Ear Drum" -- on Warner Bros. Records/Blacksmith Music on July 24th
Sixth Album From Critically Acclaimed Hip-Hop Artist Features Production by Kanye West, will.i.am, Madlib and Hi-Tek, and Guest Appearances by Norah Jones, Jean Grae and UGK
-- Hip-hop's premier MC Talib Kweli will release his eagerly awaited new album -- "Ear Drum" -- on July 24th. A career-defining work that showcases the Brooklyn rapper's advanced lyricism and faultless musical taste, "Ear Drum" is Kweli's first album released on his own label, Blacksmith Music and Warner Bros. Records.
Kweli says the album's title comes from "the image of the ear and of the drum, which are powerful enough by themselves, but put them together and it's an instrument in your body that helps you hear. They're also two very simple, yet powerful words. I wanted to focus on finding a sound that makes you move, and that's where the word 'eardrum' popped in my head."
With lyrics that touch on life's journeys and struggles, "Ear Drum" also showcases Talib's sonic versatility with tracks ranging from the silky-soulful "Soon The New Day," which features vocals by best-selling chanteuse Norah Jones, to the sexy first single "Hot Thing" and the hard-edged "Say Something," which features rapping by Blacksmith artist Jean Grae.
"Ear Drum" boasts innovative production work by such vanguard artists as Kanye West, who worked on Kweli's 2002's gold-certified "Quality" and 2004's "The Beautiful Struggle"; Black-Eyed Peas founder will.i.am; rapper-producer Madlib; and Black Star producer Hi-Tek, who also collaborated with Kweli on the gold-certified 2000 album "Reflection Eternal." Of his desire to collaborate with a variety of producers and artists, Kweli says: "We need to challenge our audience, but we also need to challenge ourselves to know that whatever our new experiences are, we can write about them, be creative, and bring that to an audience without them feeling alienated."
Since making his debut with Mos Def as Black Star in 1988, Kweli has become known as an exceptional and socially aware artist who has rejected mainstream rap's embrace of violence and bling in favor of addressing issues of black consciousness and self-love. "Ear Drum" solidifies his status as one of rap's most talented and important voices.
Artists Unite in Donating Tracks to "Instant Karma: The Amnesty International Campaign to Save Darfur," to Be Released by Warner Bros. Records June 12
Historic Double CD Features More Than 20 John Lennon Songs Recorded by U2, Green Day, R.E.M., Avril Lavigne, Big & Rich, Christina Aguilera, Snow Patrol, Corinne Bailey Rae, Regina Spektor and More; Tracks by Additional Artists Such as Duran Duran, Deftones, Ozzy Osbourne and Willie Nelson -- More Than 50 in All -- Available for Digital Download
-- In an historic effort to mobilize activism around the human rights atrocities occurring in Darfur, Sudan, more than 50 international recording artists and over 30 record labels have united behind "Instant Karma: The Amnesty International Campaign to Save Darfur." The collection features iconic songs by legendary musician and peace activist John Lennon recorded by an array of best-selling artists and will be available for purchase both on CD and as digital downloads via online retailers.
In keeping with its long tradition of activism powered by music, Amnesty International, the world's largest grassroots human rights organization, will use Yoko Ono's generous gift of Lennon's solo catalogue as the centerpiece of its campaign to rally activists toward human rights activism for the people of Darfur. The "Instant Karma" mobilization centers on saving the lives of innocent women, children and men who are dying by the thousands and restoring peace in the region.
The two-CD set of "Instant Karma," which will be released by Warner Bros. Records on June 12, boasts a stellar line-up of 23 world-class artists from a variety of genres putting their own unique spin on classic songs from Lennon's solo songbook. The artists -- who come from the worlds of rock, pop, hip-hop and country -- include longtime activists U2 ("Instant Karma"), Green Day ("Working Class Hero"), R.E.M. ("#9 Dream") and Jackson Browne ("Oh My Love"); female pop powerhouses Christina Aguilera ("Mother"), Avril Lavigne ("Imagine"), and Corinne Bailey Rae ("I'm Losing You"); country stars Big & Rich ("Nobody Told Me"); alternative favorites Snow Patrol ("Isolation"), The Flaming Lips ("(Just Like) Starting Over"), Postal Service ("Grow Old With Me") and Regina Spektor ("Real Love"); best-selling rockers Aerosmith ("Give Peace a Chance"), Lenny Kravitz ("Cold Turkey") and Los Lonely Boys ("Whatever Gets You Thru the Night"); and pensive singer-songwriters Jakob Dylan with Dhani Harrison ("Gimme Some Truth") and Ben Harper ("Beautiful Boy").
The rights to Lennon's songs were generously donated by Yoko Ono, who has donated all music publishing royalties. Amnesty International chose to harness the power of Lennon's music to inspire a new generation of activists to stand up for human rights. Proceeds from CD and digital sales will support Amnesty International and its campaign to focus attention and mobilize activism around the urgent catastrophe in Darfur, and other human rights crises.
"It's wonderful that, through this campaign, music that is so familiar to many people of my era will now be embraced by a whole new generation," Ono says. "John's music set out to inspire change, and in standing up for human rights, we really can make the world a better place."
Larry Cox, executive director of Amnesty International U.S.A., adds, "We know music's power to unite and inspire people. With hundreds of thousands dead, millions driven from their burned out villages and rape being used as a tactic in the Darfur conflict, the world needs a mass mobilization demanding action and justice. The 'Instant Karma' campaign combines John Lennon's passionate desire for us to imagine a more peaceful world with Amnesty International's expertise in achieving justice. 'Instant Karma' allows ordinary people to lend their hand in saving lives -- a notion we think would make John proud."
"John Lennon was not just a famous Beatle, he was the social conscience of his generation," says Jeff Ayeroff, one of the album's executive producers. "By reinterpreting his music and reintroducing it to a new generation, we shine a light on the darkness that is Darfur. Yoko Ono's gift of John's music to Amnesty International, whose work points out the pain and injustice in the world, is a true beacon of light. Give peace a chance is all we are saying."
Winner of the 1977 Nobel Peace Prize, Amnesty International includes people from all walks of life taking action and is composed of more than 2.2 million human rights activists worldwide. Its members protect people wherever justice, freedom, truth and dignity are denied. Amnesty International investigates and exposes abuses, educates and mobilizes the public and helps transform societies to create a safer, more just world.
Amnesty International has a long history of activism involving musicians including 1988's worldwide Human Rights Now! Tour and 1998's Paris concert, which honored the 40th and 50th anniversaries of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, respectively. Collectively, the concerts featured performances by Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band, Sting, Peter Gabriel, Tracy Chapman, Youssou N'Dour, Alanis Morissette, Jimmy Page, Robert Plant and Radiohead.

Warner Home Video and Turner Classic Movies Present TCM Spotlight: Esther Williams
Due July 17
The ravishing bathing beauty who pioneered a new genre of moviemaking -- "Aqua Musicals" -- will be seen in some of her splashiest roles when Warner Home Video and Turner Classic Movies showcase TCM Spotlight: Esther Williams on July 17. The collection includes the DVD debuts of five Technicolor films from 'America's Favorite Mermaid' - Bathing Beauty, On an Island with You, Easy to Wed, Neptune's Daughter and Dangerous When Wet.
Also included are special features such as TCM host Robert Osborne's recent "Private Screenings" interview with Esther (featured on the Bathing Beauty DVD), Academy Award(R)-winning vintage shorts, musical number outtakes, and classic cartoons. The films will be available only as a collection in a collectible digi-pak gift and will sell for $49.92 SRP.
Bathing Beauty
Red Skelton joins Esther Williams in this buoyant (literally) comedy about a lovesick songwriter who enrolls in a women's college to woo his estranged swimming-teacher wife.
On an Island with You
Moonlight swims, swaying palms, Technicolor(R) sunsets and...cannibals?! Esther Williams, Peter Lawford, Ricardo Montalban and Cyd Charisse get the swimming, swaying and sunsets and Jimmy Durante gets the cannibals in this tune-filled paradise for fans of musical comedy.
Easy To Wed
When the local paper runs an untrue story claiming an heiress (Williams) is a husband stealer, she prepares to sue for libel. So a newspaper honcho (Keenan Wynn) devises a counter scheme to compromise her image: He'll arrange a sham wedding between his fiancee (Lucille Ball) and a newsroom Romeo (Van Johnson), send the Romeo to woo the heiress, and make the phony story come true!
Neptune's Daughter
Longing for a Latin lover, boy-crazy Betty Barrett (Betty Garrett) mistakes girl-shy Jack Spratt (Red Skelton) for the South American polo team captain Jose O'Rourke (Ricardo Montalban). Meanwhile, the real O'Rourke pursues Betty's elegant sister Eve (Esther Williams). Soon mistaken identities and romantic complications spin into a dizzy mix of slapstick and flirtatious fun.
Dangerous When Wet (1953)
Williams plays Katy, a farm girl who finds romance while training for a swim across the English Channel. In the film's key sequence, Williams swims, swirls and swoops with cartoon stars Tom and Jerry in a concoction "brimful of attractive people and attractive performances" (Clive Hirschhorn, The Hollywood Musical).
