Hi everyone. I hope that the weather is as beautiful where you are as it is this afternoon here in San Diego. A retractable screen was just installed this morning in the large opening for the balcony doors in my office and the result is wonderful. It's like working outdoors! AutoMatters #237 is now online in the www.AutoMatters.net 2007 Column Archives. Its direct link is:

http://www.automatters.net/2007%20Columns/0237.htm

Entitled "Cars (and more) at the Fair; Fast Cars & Superstars," this is a fun, two-topic AutoMatters column.

First, join me for my annual car-themed tour of the Del Mar -- oops, San Diego County Fair. As usual, there is a wide variety of weird and wonderful stuff to see and do.

"

Please bear with me while I get a plug in here for my AutoMatters still photography. I entered their photo contest for the first time this year and actually won a ribbon. Cool. Be sure to read through to the end. If you have any interest whatsoever in motorsports and/or celebrities, I think you will want to check this out. Hopefully next week's column will be about the recent Championship Off Road Races in Chula Vista. I witnessed some amazing driving feats, including vehicles doing complete, end-to-end rollovers and continuing to race -- without even losing a lap! The delay has been because I have a whole bunch of photos to edit for this column.

Beach Tennis USA Tour Continues On West Coast

Santa Monica To Host Second Event Of SoCal Points Series

-- Beach Tennis USA(R) will hold the second West Coast event of its 2007 National Tour on Saturday and Sunday, June 23-24 in Santa Monica, CA. The "Santa Monica Madness" will be held on the beach at 2030 Barnard Way, Parking Lot 4S, and is the second of four Southern California events comprising the Beach Tennis USA SoCal Points Series, which will also showcase the new, hybrid sport in Santa Barbara and Long Beach.

On Saturday, preliminary qualifying play for both the Men's and Women's Pro divisions will begin at 10:00 a.m., with elimination rounds beginning Sunday at 10:00 a.m. The Men's and Women's Pro finals will take place Sunday at 3:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m., respectively. There will be free instructional play all weekend, with balls and racquets provided courtesy of Head and Penn, official equipment suppliers of Beach Tennis USA.

Southern California's best beach tennis talent will compete for a $1,000 first-place prize, as well as series points. At the conclusion of the "SoCal Series Slam" on July 21-22 in Long Beach, CA, the player with the most series points will win a cash bonus plus a guaranteed spot in the 2007 National Beach Tennis Championship in Long Beach, NY on September 1-2. Currently, Ken Kuperstein and Mike Fedderly (both of Palm Desert, CA) lead the Men's Pro division with 1700 points, while San Diego's Gretchen Magers and Lindsey Buechler lead the Women's Pro division with 1400 points.

Beach tennis, which was launched in the U.S. as a pro and recreational sport in 2005 by real estate developer Marc Altheim, is a true hybrid sport that combines tennis and beach volleyball into one exciting and fast-paced game. Played on a regulation beach volleyball court, two players on each team use standard tennis racquets to hit a depressurized tennis ball back and forth over the net without letting it hit the sand. Players wishing to compete in any of the Southern California events can register online at http://www.beachtennisusa.net/.

About Beach Tennis USA

Based in New York City, Beach Tennis USA is committed to introducing Americans of all ages to the competitive excitement and recreational benefits of beach tennis. Company founders Marc Altheim and Fredric Finkelstein also established a governing body, the National Beach Tennis Association, in anticipation of the sport being played competitively throughout the U.S. To learn more, visit http://www.beachtennisusa.net/.
