'The Help' Passes $100M Domestically
The U.S. Justice Department filed suit to block AT&T's proposed merger with T-Mobile, citing the potential for reduced wireless competition. AT&T, which would have to pay $3 billion to T-Mobile parent Deutsche Telekom if the deal fails, is likely to fight the challenge.
Murdoch father, son are asked to give sworn testimony
Rupert Murdoch, and his son, James Murdoch, who last month answered questions before Parliament about the News Corp. hacking scandal, are being called to give sworn testimony about the situation at the Royal Courts of Justice. Their testimony will be shown live on TV. Meanwhile, News Corp. is said to be using its internal investigation led by ex-New York City schools chancellor Joel Klein to determine whether the alleged hacking incidents may have broken any U.S. laws
Shipments of 3D panels saw triple-digit growth in Q2
Manufacturers shipped 5.2 million LCD panels optimized for 3D television in the second quarter, an increase of 124% from the first quarter, according to a report from DisplaySearch. Nearly 5 million of the panels were destined for 3DTVs, as the percentage of LCD televisions that support 3D doubled from 4.5% to 9.3%. Analysts say the numbers show that 3DTV is defying market challenges such as high costs and an absence of available content by continuing to log slow but persistent growth
Yahoo! gears up for original fall lineup
Yahoo! says that beginning Oct. 3, it will introduce a lineup of original programming, the first of a series of shows the company plans to release in 2012. The eight short-form series will feature appearances from actors such as Morgan Spurlock and "Reno 911"'s Niecy Nash. Yahoo! reportedly relied on user metrics to determine what types of shows would sell and has plans to redesign its video-distribution platform to be more like Netflix and YouTube
HP will make a last round of TouchPad tablets
Hewlett-Packard will attempt to meet the demand for its discontinued TouchPad tablets by manufacturing one final batch of the devices, the company said Tuesday. HP did not indicate whether it would continue to price the product at $99, where sales boomed. The company also said it was not sure it could meet demand for the tablet
