Facebook plans ad giveaway that targets small businesses
Facebook is planning to give away $50 in free advertising to as many as 200,000 small businesses in a bid to give them a taste of the social network's marketing potential, Chief Operating Officer Sheryl Sandberg says. "Credits like that can go a long way," Sandberg says. "For $50, most small businesses can target every single person they need to target at least once, and then they can grow their business from there."

Dr Pepper explores niche social marketing
Dr Pepper partnered with DeviantArt.com, a social site devoted to visual artists that has 18 million registered users, for a campaign spotlighting outdoor art. There, artists were invited to submit designs for an outdoor mural paying homage to Dr Pepper, with the winning design to be given prominent placement in the Williamsburg neighborhood in Brooklyn, N.Y.

Study: Most consumers research online but still buy at stores
The NPD Group reports that a majority of American consumers do online research on consumer electronics before making a purchase, yet most of them still turn to retail outlets to make their purchases. Only about one-third of consumers surveyed by NPD said they were likely to buy computers and software online, and there were smaller percentages willing to make online purchases of e-readers, digital cameras, smartphones and other electronics

Microsoft to roll out Xbox TV for holiday shopping
Microsoft will enter the media box market in time for the 2011 holiday shopping season, CEO Steve Ballmer told financial analysts this week. The Xbox TV product will offer on-demand video content and live broadcast and cable television channels through the Xbox 360 game console, according to Microsoft. Analyst: Without Apple and Disney, UltraViolet faces tough going
The Digital Entertainment Content Ecosystem consortium's UltraViolet technology, which will enable digital content to play on a variety of products, could be attractive to consumers if it delivers on its promise of a "frictionless" experience in home media, said Ed Barton, director of the Digital Media Service at Strategy Analytics. Still, the absence of Apple and Disney from the consortium means UltraViolet may not stack up with consumers accustomed to obtaining content from iTunes and playing it on Apple products, Barton added

Bug Labs, Ford Motor collaborate on car gadgets
Bug Labs, a New York-based developer of open-source gadget modules, will work with Ford Motor on creating customizable gadget combinations for vehicles. The Bug product will enable Ford owners to add gadgets, such as cameras, fuel monitors and Global Positioning System navigation units, to their vehicles without software programming.
