INDUSTRY INSIGHTS: The Rise of Content 4.0 and Why No Content is "Free"

By Matt Weeks, Founder and CEO of EyeTMedia, an online ad network optimization company.

The Rise of Content 4.0 and how we pay for "Free" content now.
Why we should blow-up the idea that all content must be "free."

Andrew Vanacore wrote one of the best explorations of what seems to be driving content owners towards subscription and pay-for-view and away from so-called "free" access to content. That should be "ad-supported" content, not "free." Nothing is free.

We submit that we are paying for free content today, and we should embrace that as a fact, and blow-up the idea of totally free content by re-inventing how we (as consumers) tell our content providers and infrastructure partners and advertisers what we want, how we want it, and what we're willing to pay for it.

Let's explore why nothing is free.

The Rise of Content 4.0
We are today facing what we call "Content 4.0" The question is who will pay?
Content 0.1 was not paid-for because there were no payers. (Cave drawings & pottery come to mind.)
Content 1.0 was paid-for by "Benefactors." (Pyramids, statuary, paintings etc.)
Content 2.0 was paid-for by want-ads and political parties (newspapers, leaflets, magazines, display ads)
Content 3.0 was paid-for by CPG ads, political parties and anyone who would bid (Web, TV, Radio, and Cable/MSO)
Content 4.0 will be paid-for by any and all of the above, but controlled by the consumer. And it will arrive on multiple screens, pipes and formats. Bad content will die a swift death. So will poorly targeted ads.

Sebastian Aloi
NALIPster's feature opens Friday in Manhattan

NALIP member Sebastian Aloi - recently relocated from Argentina to Los Angeles - produced the feature film The Paranoids, directed by Gabriel Medina. Distributed by Oscilloscope, the film opens in Manhattan this Friday at Cinema Village, 22 East 12th Street, Greenwich Village.

The following review by Simon Abrams appeared in The L Magazine this week:

As tedious as it normally is to watch overprivileged twentysomethings stuck in a creative rut find their way out by finding romance (on film, that is; in real life, voyeurism totally rules), there's somehow always room for one more film to defy that tried-and-true expectation. The Paranoids, co-writer/director Gabriel Medina's portrait of a wiry, mullet-sporting angry young Argentinean with an autistic artistic temperament, is both lively and brooding, alternating between taking its protagonist's all-too-relatable perfectionist, antisocial tendencies deathly seriously, and taking the piss out of them (as in a dream sequence that liberally paraphrases Taoist philosophy, and one of the most dramatic video game boxing matches on film). Medina is sincere about recreating his protagonist's worldview, but he also has the proper distance to recognize that it's the stuff of bittersweet comedy.

It should come as no surprise that The Paranoids is in part based on Medina's own youth. Luciano Gauna (an excellent Daniel Hendler), a budding screenwriter unable to finish a script he's been working on for years, is a control freak. It's how he struggles to cope with knowing that his best friend Manuel (Walter Jakob) has already made a big splash with his own TV show-cum-overnight franchise while he's stuck dressing up as a big purple monster suit for children's parties (Barney he ain't). And he has a thing for Manuel's girlfriend Sofia (Jazmin Stuart). And he can't dance (he's got this windmill thing going with his right arm but it could be he's just used too much Tiger Balm).

Thankfully, The Paranoids, a film about a character constantly striving to maintain emotional equilibrium in his mopey little life, is so good at walking its protagonist's volatile tight rope. Hendler has a hungry look in his eyes that sustains many of his character's repressed, passive-aggressive confrontations, which always boil down to a stare and a pout anyway. Medina knows just how hard it is for Luciano to experience life outside of his terms and perfectly mimics that impulse in his meticulous pacing and camera blocking. The aforementioned video game battle is one of the funniest contemporary expressions of the phallocentric contest that is the love triangle, the romantic comedy's standby representation of sexual tension. It's surprisingly tense, more than a little silly, and filmed with a Fincheresque OCD precision--everything a comedy about a twenty-something's bruised ego should have in a nutshell.

INDUSTRY INSIGHTS: Tips for Writing Film Proposals or Business Plans

Film Specific's Stacey Parks, author of "The Insider's Guide To Independent Film Distribution," mentored both the Documentary and Narrative LPA Fellows this past week in Santa Fe, New Mexico.

Article by Stacey Parks

Well I'm just back from Santa Fe, NM where I was teaching Distribution, Finance, and Marketing to the NALIP Latino Producer's Academy fellows. What a talented group of filmmakers! I fell truly honored to have been invited there to work with this group.

Yesterday when I was teaching a class on Packaging & Financing I went around the room and asked everyone what their most pressing question was on this topic - so that I made sure everyone left with getting their questions answered.

I was surprised that the most common question everyone wanted to know was about writing Proposals or Business Plans to investors. So here's a few tips I shared with the class, for those of you who are in the same situation:

1. Try and stick to a simple document for the first pass (ex: 10-15 pages vs. 30).

2. You don't need to include a detailed budget in your initial proposal, instead save it for if and when it's requested.

3. Use realistic and current sales projections, NOT comparables to show potential revenue for your project (you can get these in the 2009 Film Distribution Kit).

Estela Winner Cruz Angeles Brings Don't Let Me Drown to LPA and Santa Fe Audience

In partnership with Santa Fe's Center for Contemporary Arts and Cinematheque, NALIP hosts a special screening and case study of Don't Let Me Drown in Santa Fe tonight. Cruz Angeles (Estela 2009) travelled to New Mexico to mentor LPA director and producer Fellows, and to present his Sundance award winning film Don't Let Me Drown at the CCA.

While a special part of the LPA curriculum, to get inside the development, production and release process of this special film, the screening was also open to the Santa Fe community, to bring them a wonderful example of Latino filmmaking. Co-hosted by Universal Studios and the New Mexico Film Office, the program concluded with an in depth Q&A with Cruz, led by CCA curator Jason Silverman.

For a terrific interview on the film's origins and themes, check out Cruz on Mary-Charlotte Domandi's KSFR 101.1 show, Santa Fe Radio Cafe, through a podcast of the piece posted here.

A link to it with a short blurb is also on the Huffington Post here.

NALIP 10 Article in IDA Newsletter

NALIP member Chelo Alvarez-Stehle (LPA 2008) wrote an article about the NALIP 10 conference for the International Documentary Association's e-newsletter, which can be read below.

Article by Chelo Alvarez-Stehle

"If you are Latino you are American. You are 10-15,000 years of America!" said legendary playwright and filmmaker Luis Valdez in his opening keynote address at "NALIP 10: A Decade of Influence," the National Association of Latino Independent Producers 10th annual conference. Just as Newport Beach draped its manicured downtown with banners for the Newport Beach Film Festival, over 600 Latino filmmakers, writers, actors and industry executives gathered from April 16 to 19 in the heart of Fashion Island to celebrate a conclave of Hispanic film wizards. Attendance ranged from acclaimed Hollywood figures such as writer Peter Murrieta (The Wizards of Waverly Place) and director/choreographer Kenny Ortega (High School Musical), to less known independent filmmakers, some of whom are starting to make headlines, such as documentary filmmaker Hugo Perez (Summer Sun Winter Moon) and the new promise in Latino sci-fi, Alex Rivera (Sleep Dealer).

Bernardo Ruiz
NALIP Board Member represents WGAE to lobby Congress for increased PBS and CPB funding

The Writers Guild of America, East is urging the Obama Administration and Congress to increase appropriations for public broadcasting. NALIP Board Member (and Writer's Guild of America, East member) Bernardo Ruiz joined WGAE Executive Director, Lowell Peterson and a small delegation of writers (from the Daily Show with John Stewart, American Experience, Bill Moyers and The West Wing) to lobby Congress and the U.S. House of Representatives to increase appropriations for the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB). Ruiz and other writers met with Senate majority leader Harry Reid, Speaker Pelosi's office and Congressman David Obey, Chairman of the Appropriations Committee. As an ultimate goal, the guild is urging our new administration to secure long-term funding and save public broadcasting from political and commercial crosscurrents.

To cap off the day of meetings, Writers Guild members presented stand-up comedy routines and participated in a panel discussion about the growing phenomenon of audiences turning to comedy/variety programs for news and the increasing synergy among Washington, Wall Street, journalism and late night comedy/variety programs. The panel discussion was moderated by WGAE President Michael Winship.

  INDUSTRY INSIGHTS: The 8th Habit

This is part of a series of informative articles that we are offering our readers. Click on Talk Back to discuss with other NALIPsters!

Article by Marvin V. Acuna

multi.plic.ity
noun

1. the quality or condition of being manifold or various
2. a great number

In other words, have plenty, and I mean plenty, of irons in the fire.

A few weeks ago I was sitting at bar in Kansas City, having a drink on the eve of a dear friend's wedding. I was joined by a mutual friend whom I had not seen in sometime. After pleasantries, he asked me a very direct question. How did I, a kid from R.I., with no known industry contacts (when I arrived in L.A.), end up producing a film with Tom Hanks?

"I follow momentum," I responded.

Like so many PROFESSIONALS in this business I have a vast number of projects (I'm not solely referring to film projects) in various stages of development. And I channel my resources to the projects that are proceeding forward in that moment. You have to. It's survival of the fittest in business and you truly never know what will catch on fire first. But, as you tap into all the possibilities of things that excite you, magic happens.

Truth is that studios have hundreds of varied projects in so-called "active" development, representatives amass a robust client roster of multifaceted talent, and producers are shaping thirty to fifty projects at a time, if not more.

Please take advantage of a special offer from the Center Theater Group: Tickets for $20 for NALIP members to see LYDIA at the Mark Taper Forum at the Music Center, downtown Los Angeles.

LYDIA is a lyrical and magical meditation on family and cultural identity, an expertly crafted, shocking play of discovery. The Flores family welcomes Lydia, an undocumented maid, into their El Paso home to care for a daughter who was tragically disabled three days before her quinceanera. The two women’s mysterious and nearly miraculous bond threatens to expose long-buried secrets and destroy the troubled family. Set in the 1970s on the Texas border separating the United States and Mexico, LYDIA is the deeply emotional story of a group of people dealing with loss and teetering between two worlds. Mature themes. Recommended for adults only.

Restrictions apply. Valid on all seats in Section B for Tues, Wed, and Thur. perfs. only. Subject to availability. Not valid on previously purchased tickets. Cannot be combined with any other offers. Expires May 14.

Turner Classic Movies to Look at Latino Images in Film in May

Marking the fourth in an ongoing series of film festivals exploring Hollywood's portrayal of different racial groups, Turner Classic Movies (TCM) will turn its spotlight on the cinematic depiction of Latinos. Throughout the month of May, TCM's RACE AND HOLLYWOOD: LATINO IMAGES IN FILM will showcase 40 films, past and present, that show the progression of how Latino characters and culture are depicted in cinema. Joining TCM's Robert Osborne in hosting the festival will be founding NALIP board member and UCLA professor Chon Noriega, author of "Shot in America: Television, the State, and the Rise of Chicano Cinema."

TCM's RACE AND HOLLYWOOD: LATINO IMAGES IN FILM festival will take place Tuesday and Thursday nights in May, beginning at 8 p.m. (ET). Each night's collection of films will be centered on a particular theme, such as a look at depictions from the silent era, views of border towns and small ethnic towns, musicals, stories featuring interracial relationships, explorations of social problems and Latino representations in past and current westerns. Also included in the festival line-up will be several contemporary films making their first appearance on TCM, including The Milagro Beanfield War (1988), La Bamba (1987), The Mambo Kings (1992), Stand and Deliver (1988), The Ballad of Gregorio Cortez (1983) and Lone Star (1996). In addition, each evening will feature a specially chosen film for late-night movie fans.

INDUSTRY INSIGHTS: The End is the Beginning

This is part of a series of informative articles that we are offering our readers. Click on Talk Back to discuss with other NALIPsters!

Article by Martha Alderson, M.A.

An agent flings a promising work against the wall. When asked why, she rages about all the times she has read entire manuscripts only to be disappointed in the end. She softens as she explains how, by the time she reaches the final quarter of the story, she longs for the work to succeed. If it fails, disappointment stings all the more.

Agents, editors, directors, audiences, and readers alike expect the scenes of a story to add up to something meaningful in the end.

The End is the Beginning

T.S. Eliot said, "The end is in the beginning."

The beginning of any entertaining and well-crafted story tells as much about where we are headed as to where we will be at the end. This means that until you write the end you will not truly know the beginning.

Which comes first? Does a writer labor over the first three quarters of a project where the groundwork is laid for the end? Or, does one write the climax itself first?

Before a writer can lay the groundwork about the character and the situation to build to a climax in a way that makes the highest point of the story seem both inevitable and surprising, doesn't the writer first need to know the climax? At what point do we surrender our idea of the story and our will, and let the story have its head?

Whichever which way you get there, the choices you make for the end of your story deserve attention.

Los Angeles Times Runs Major Story on NALIP 10

The Los Angeles Times has run a major story on the NALIP 10 conference and the state of Latinos in the industry, reprinted here:

By Alicia Lozano, Los Angeles Times

On a breezy afternoon in Newport Beach, hundreds of Latino filmmakers descended upon the swanky Island Hotel to celebrate "A Decade of Influence" at the National Assn. of Latino Independent Producers' 10th annual conference.

For three days last weekend, the screenwriters, producers and directors attended panel discussions, pitched projects and mingled with like-minded professionals. Conversations varied, but participants agreed on one thing: Despite a noticeable improvement in Latino films and roles, there is much work left to do.

"There are a lot of victories, a lot of solid successes," said Kathryn Galan, executive director of the association. She pointed to television shows such as "Ugly Betty," "The George Lopez Show" and "Resurrection Blvd." as triumphs in the industry but lamented that many other segments of the film and television industry don't represent the 15% of the population that calls itself Latino.

"The inside thinks 'Three Amigos' is a diversity effort," Galan said. "Nothing reflects the voice of U.S.-born, English-speaking American Latinos."

Television, theater and film should reflect that shift, according to playwright Luis Valdez, a keynote speaker at the conference and founder of Teatro Campesino, a Mexican heritage theater in San Juan Bautista. [Click here to listen to Luis Valdez's keynote address at NALIP 10]

"It seems to me that the characterization of Latinos is not only very sparse, it's also very limited," he said in an interview. "In order to appreciate the demographic, you have to deal with people on a broader level. The stories that are being told are very cliche."

Alex Rivera's Sleep Dealer Opens This Friday, April 17th in LA and NY

NALIP mentor and founding member Alex Rivera's feature film Sleep Dealer opens in theaters in Los Angeles and New York this weekend on Friday, April 17th.

It's a science-fiction, but has nothing do to with space aliens, or cops who shoot robots. Sleep Dealer is a film of ideas - and it looks at the future from a perspective never seen before: from south of the border, looking at America from the outside.

A.O. Scott of The New York Times says: Sleep Dealer is "Exuberantly entertaining -- a dystopian fable of globalization disguised as a science-fiction adventure...."

Sleep Dealer is a thriller filled with lush visuals and big ideas about the future of war, immigration, the environment, and the border.

There's more information at sleepdealer.com
Theater and ticketing details are online here.

As we all, know, audiences on opening weekend determine the future of a film, so please go to the theater this weekend and support this film - and in the process support the idea of a more wild, diverse, and relevant cinema!

Again - the opening is this weekend, Friday April 17th, in Los Angeles and New York!

Fire-eaters and Pink Haired Strippers: Producing Stories for the Broadband Generation

When you watch videos online you either hold a small screen or sit at a desk. If that video you’re watching doesn’t grab your attention immediately, you simply click another link. As a filmmaker, how do you create that immediate connection with a viewer? Do you want to create web content for today’s broadband generation? Come meet the revolutionary artists making a mark in that field today.

You've heard of PROM QUEEN - that $1 million series funded by Michael Eisner that sparked a new era. Big Fantastic's Douglas Cheney (SAM HAS 7 FRIENDS) was director on that, creating a web series phenomenon by serializing dramatic content into a short, daily 90 second format.

Interested in creating a viral web series on YouTube? NALIP LPA Fellow Ruth Livier ("Resurrection Blvd.") created and stars in the groundbreaking web series “Ylse” (pronounced ee-l-say), just starting its second season. The production was put together by a group of Latino producers, actors and filmmakers in Los Angeles with their own backing.

And filmmaker/software expert Eric Escobar will discuss his director's collective, Kontent Films, where he designs unique commercials and original work for the web.

This and more cutting-edge, visionary panels, workshops and conversations at NALIP 10.

PBS President and CEO Paula Kerger to Speak at NALIP 10 on April 17

The first NALIP Conference, in 1999, was held parallel to that summer’s PBS Conference in San Francisco, and featured intense discussions of the possible defunding of a Latino minority consortia member company. Out of that intense interaction between passionate Latino producers and PBS, Latino Public Broadcasting was founded, an organization that is proud to fund and distribute quality Latino filmmakers and stories. And NALIP was born, with more than forty percent of our membership working in or aspiring to make documentaries for the public television system.

The NALIP Conference committee is thrilled to welcome PBS President and CEO Paula Kerger to our 10th anniversary celebration. She has graciously agreed to spend Friday afternoon with us on April 17, and to hold an intimate conversation for our producing community, conducted by New York Daily News journalist Juan Gonzalez. PBS is the nation’s largest non-commercial media organization, with 356 member stations throughout the country. She will discuss her commitment to high-quality content, education and diversity, plus share her plans to work with our community on increasing the profile and opportunities for Latino/a makers. NALIP is honored to have a speaker of Ms. Kerger’s standing, and proud to introduce her to our many documentary producers and directors.
