CA Boom 4: 20th Century 21st Century Modern
CA Boom 4, the annual not-to-be-missed West Coast Independent Design Show hosted design aficionados and trade professionals in Santa Monica this past weekend. Enter the CA Boom, 20th century 21st century modern in the 21st century with a material difference.
A full roster of DJ’s music permeated Santa Monica ’s Barker hangar creating a party atmosphere. Design panels and architectural home tours round out the modern design showcase.
One of CA Boom’s founding principles “Good design isn’t just for the elite, but for well informed” gives attendees the insight of contemporary design.
Prefab entered the zone of reality with over a dozen prescreened prefab manufacturers. More than just concept, each have built at least one prefab home, have their manufacturing and delivery process in place and are able to write orders. Created with modules being more than just a box, I somehow felt I’d I could create a home of adult customizable architectural Legos®. Hive Modular Homes, www.hivemodular.com, clearly illustrated the advantages of prefab, a 16 week process, and $200 per square foot turn-key. H-Haus, www.h-haus.com, introduced architecturally modern eco-friendly energy efficient designs with a European twist. Sander Architects, www.sander-architects.com, promoted a hybrid house part prefab all custom™ for infinite possibilities.
Debuting at CA Boom 4, Alberto Frias’ Transport crosses the line between architecture, art and furniture and reminiscing a walk onto the Jetsons show or Disney’s Tomorrowland. Enter the Transport pod. Sinking in floating on a cloud, you’re surrounded in a cocoon world of LED changing colored lights and music. www.albertofrias.com
Whyr’hymer Furniture, a customized wood favorite is made to order by woodworking artist Brandon Morrison. Furniture created personally for you, it welcomes you home, like a treasured pet, perhaps even a Weinmariner. Designed with warmth and a finish so smooth and inviting, you’ll have guests feeling your furniture. Whether real wood veneer lighting, cabinet, seating, table, or bedding, you’ll enjoy the artistic craftsmanship and knowing that sustainable woods are utilized. Wood by nature has warmth, Whyr’hymer Furniture has soul. As Morrison shares, “What comes from my hands…comes from my heart.” www.whyrhymer.com
PIE, a previous CA Boom favorite, is one of mine too with the West Coast debut of PIE Spoon lounge. Seating and lighting that’s curvaceous functional art in contemporary shapes and just plain fun. Art created of 100% hand-crafted ecologically friendly water hyacinth, liana, bamboo and rattan, this natural solution. Bannavis Andrew Sribyatta, an architect turned furniture designer, discovered a way to create while involving his family in Thailand . www.projectimportexport.com
Motoart, brings aviation history to functional art. You’ll see familiar and not so familiar shapes with a high shine and an immediate appreciation of aviation design. Propellers, wings, engines amongst parts integrated in sculptures, tables, desks and chairs. A perfect match blending modern. www.motoart.com
Hatch brings bean bags to a new level of fun and design with the French lounger. This is not the shape of the typical predictable bean bags. www.hatch-bbag.com
Boon with innovations for modern parents is a favorite for parents of young kids. It captures modern design and functionality with a twist of fun for kids as well as parents. The Frog Pod cleans up the bath. Animal Bags rounds up the stuffed animals and put them to work. Flo’s bubble bath dispenser creates a gentle waterfall with a protective faucet cover to prevent injury. www.booninc.com
The Ultimate Spread elevates your entertaining experience with a bold shot of color and modern shapes in Presentationware. Illuminate with color in Aluminate™ perforated colored votive hurricanes. Presentation is everything. www.theultimatespread.com
Contemplating today’s modern design to the days of Pierre Koenig’s case study house or Ayn Rand’s The Fountainhead, and it’s the modern materials that make the difference. If life were that simple.
