Lamborghini LP640 Debut at OC Auto Show
The new Lamborghini Murciélago LP640
Automobili Lamborghini presents the passionately developed evolution of the Lamborghini Murciélago Coupe at the Orange County Auto Show.
The new version of this highly successful super-sports car features considerable innovations in terms of body design and mechanics. And also with a new name: Murciélago LP640, which refers to its engine position longitudinale posteriore - and to its power 640 hp. Designers and engineers have not only focused on reworking the engine, suspensions, gearbox, exhaust system, brakes and electronics, but also the interior and exterior design; improvements that make the Murciélago LP 640 the most extreme and fastest sports car in its class, placing it at the very top.
Unmistakable Design
In their reinterpretation of the Murciélago LP640, the designers at the Lamborghini Style Centre have remained true to the traditional Lamborghini principles of purism, sport and function. The Murciélago LP640 now appears even more aggressive, with the new front and rear bumpers contributing significantly to its appearance. The exhaust system terminal has been incorporated in the diffuser on the rear bumper. Other innovations include the rear lights, which enhance the distinguishing features of the Murciélago LP640, making it unmistakable even at night. The design of the sides is also worth mentioning: while the area behind the air intake on the right side is practically closed, the left side features a vast aperture for cooling the oil radiator. Together with the aerodynamically defined front and rear, this proves yet again that the shape of a Lamborghini is dictated by function.
For those wishing to flaunt the heart of their Murciélago LP640, on request ml engine hood made of transparent glass can be supplied. The rear view mirrors and the windscreen wipers have been modified to improve aerodynamics and "Hermera" light metal wheel rims have been added. The graphics of the instrument panel lights in the cockpit have been revamped. The interior upholstery also has a new look thanks to the lozenge-shaped stitching.
More powerful engine
The engine of the new Murci6lago LP640 has undergone outstanding and radical modification. The increased bore and longer stroke have boosted the displacement of the classic 60° V -engine from 6.2litres to 6.5 litres (6,496 cm\ Thus the already extraordinary 580 hp engine power has now been elevated to an impressive peak of 640 hp (471 kW) at 8,000 min-I. The 12-cylinder engine reaches a maximum torque of 660 Nm at 6,000 min-I. Naturally, the Lamborghini Murci61ago LP640 complies with every European and North American law governing exhaust fumes.
This "evolutionary leap forward" has been possible thanks to a coherent review of every engine component: the cylinder head and the entire intake system (based on the tried and tested Lamborghini variable geometry system), have been completely reworked. The crankshaft, camshafts and exhaust system have also undergone innovation.
The increase in power naturally determines an increase in performance. The excellent performance of the Murciélago LP640 means it can now accelerate from o to 100 km/h in 3.4 seconds (0.4 seconds faster than the previous model).
Lamborghini engineers have also concentrated on improving torque development. The "drivability" of the engine is enhanced by a continuous variable timing system (intake and exhaust side) and a drive-by-wire engine management system.
To meet the thermal requirements of the engine, the engineers have foreseen a considerably larger oil radiator and subsequently, the air intake on the left side of the vehicle has been enlarged. The liquid cooling system, characterised by the Lamborghini V ACS system (variable geometry air inlet system) remains the same. Electronically managed air intakes open depending on the outdoor temperature and the need for cooling air, ensuring maximum aerodynamic efficiency.
Gearbox and transmission: improved efficiency and strength
More power and higher torque call for superior gearbox component performance. To meet these new demands, the new Murciélago LP640 features a modified six-ratio gearbox as well as a tougher rear differential and new axle shafts. On request, the e-gear automatic gearbox is also available equipped with the new dedicated "Thrust" (acceleration programme) mode.
Just like its predecessors, the Murciélago LP640 features permanent four-wheel drive, based on the reliable Lamborghini VT (Viscous Traction) system. The system is self-governing and does not feature any electronic controls. The drive force is usually divided between the front and rear axles in the ratio of 30 to 70. An independent control circuit adjusts the distribution of the drive force depending on dynamic oscillation, weight distribution and the relative friction factor in perfect synchronisation with the Visco clutch. In extreme cases, up to 100% of the drive force can be applied to a single axle.
Electronics: a "closed loop" for total control
The electronics have also been updated. The modified engine control units improve engine performance and "drivability" thanks to "closed loop" control.
Every engine and vehicle parameter is managed and controlled by three "master" control units and a "satellite" control unit. The master control units consist of two Lamborghini "LIE" engine control units. a Lamborghini "OF A" (Auxiliary Function Management) control unit and a Lamborghini "PMC" (Power Motor Control) satellite control unit. The control units are interconnected by a CAN Bus line.
Frame and chassis: perfect harmony
The body of the Murciélago LP640 with its characteristic scissor doors is created from the prized union of sheet steel and honeycombed carbon fibre, glued and riveted together.
Driving, handling and stability at high speed are enhanced by new springs and stabilisers, as well as by a redesigned electronically controlled damper. The "anti-dive" and "anti-squat" features on the axles, which efficiently prevent so-called "brake diving" and "squatting", have not been changed. The two springs on every rear wheel. the single spring on every front wheel and the damper are placed coaxially.
The new aluminium "Hermera" rims measure 8 W' x 18" (fore carriage) and 13" x 18" (rear axle). The vehicle can be fitted with various sized Pirelli P Zero "Rosso" tyres. The Murciélago LP640 features 245/35 ZR 18 front tyres and 335/30 ZR 18 rear tyres. For sports use, especially on racetracks. Lamborghini provides optional Pirelli P Zero "Corsa" (Race) tyres. Pirelli P "Sottozero" (Sub zero) winter tyres are currently being developed.
Brakes and safety: optional ceramic carbon hrakes
A super sports car such as the Lamborghini Murciélago LP640 ensures high safety levels.
The dual hydraulic circuit brake system equipped with a vacuum brake booster ensures considerable deceleration values. The self-ventilating front and rear brake disks measure 380 mm x 34 mm and 355 mm x 32 mm respectively. 11Ie control circuit of the four-channel anti-blocking system CABS) with electronic brake control (DRP) and traction control (TCS) features a new characteristic curve. The system consists in an electro-hydraulic control unit and tour speed sensors.
When particularly high braking performance is required, on request it is possible to equip the vehicle with 380 mm x 36 mm ceramic carbon brakes featuring six- piston brake callipers. Thus, less pressure needs to be applied to the brake pedal and the braking distance is reduced. Even in extremely demanding conditions there is almost no perceptible fading. Considerably reduced weight and superior lifetime represent t"vo further advantages, as well as a captivating graphic design.
The new Murciélago LP640 also meets with even the most rigorous safety requirements. Thanks to the two front airbags (a 60-litre single stage air bag on the driver side and a I 30-litre two stage airbag on the passenger side), the Murciélago LP640 complies with every international law in effect in terms of head-on and side crashes, impacts against posts, occupant safety, fuel supply integrity and f1ammability of materials. The luggage compartment also complies with childproof safety regulations.
Interior: even more exclusive aud customised
The seats in the cockpit have undergone the most radical changes; more spacious and equipped with redesigned head restraints, the seats now ensure better comfort. The leather upholstery features lozenge-shaped stitching called "Q-citura". The same design is recaptured on the upholstery on the door panels, the panel between the seats and the engine compartment, and on the roof panel.
A new instrument panel has been developed with lights featuring a new graphic design, t1anked by a new Kenwood car radio with a 6.5" widescreen monitor and DVD, MP3 and WMA player. An optional navigation system is also available (standard in Japan).
Like its predecessors, the new Murciélago LP640 can be customised thanks to the special fittings and upholstery packages. For the first time, the renowned characteristic Murci6lago Roadster asymmetric and driver-oriented fittings and upholstery are available for the Coupe, featuring a perforated leather driver's seat and door panel.
Thanks to the “Privilegio” customization program, any Murciélago LP640 can be transformed into a customized sports car. For example, the cockpit can be enhanced with an extremely refined carbon finish applied to the air conditioning control panel, the control level console and the parking brake.
2007 FORD EDGE ALL-NEW 265-HP V-6, 6-SPEED DELIVER IMPRESSIVE PERFORMANCE AND SUPERIOR FUEL ECONOMY
All-new, refined 265-hp 3.5-liter V-6 with variable cam timing and electronic throttle control delivers engaging performance Class-exclusive 6-speed automatic provides smooth operation and good fuel economy (expected mid 20s in highway driving)
With an all-new powertrain combination, Ford Edge delivers impressive performance feel. This crossover has near-luxury levels of quietness and refinement and fuel economy numbers associated with smaller vehicles.
Edge performance begins with an all-new 265-horsepower 3.5-liter Duratec 35 V-6 engine mated to a smooth and efficient 6-speed automatic transmission.
“Performance and good fuel economy can go hand-in-hand if you develop the right technologies,” says Barb Samardzich, vice president, Powertrain Operations, Ford Motor Company. “That’s why Ford is committed to 6-speed automatic transmissions, electronic throttle, variable cam timing and other advanced powertrain technologies.”
Powerful New V-6 Engine Designed to Deliver
Featuring a number of technological innovations, the new Duratec 35 engine delivers 265 horsepower and 250 pound-feet of torque for acceleration performance. ItFeaturing a number of technological innovations, the new Duratec 35 engine delivers 265 horsepower and 250 pound-feet of torque for acceleration performance. It’s expected to be at or near the top of the medium crossover segment while achieving fuel economy in the mid-20s on the highway. The engine’s intelligent electronic throttle body uses an accelerator pedal sensor to read and interpret the driver’s intentions. This sets the engine to run at its peak efficiency for both performance and fuel economy.
For improved fuel economy and high-rpm refinement, the engine features a forged-steel fully counterweighted crank shaft with induction-hardened journals, fractured-split, powder metal-forged connecting rods and high-temperature alloy, cast-aluminum pistons with low-friction coating.
The engine’s intake was designed as a system, all the way from the throttle body to the intake valves, to create optimum flow for peak power and to broaden the torque curve.
Computer-aided engineering (CAE) analysis was used to fine-tune the dual plenum manifold to deliver the required airflow rates without the need for intake flaps or butterfly valves in the plenum. This not only results in a broader torque signature, but eliminates the “hiccup” associated with engines equipped with butterfly-valve intakes.Intake Variable Cam Timing Improves Smoothness and Refinement
The valve train is controlled by dual camshafts and direct-acting mechanical buckets that are more compact and lighter weight than common roller finger followers. The smaller size improves packaging efficiencies and reduces idle vibration.
Intake variable cam timing (i-VCT) optimizes valve timing for a smooth idle and helps the engine produce a broad torque curve. The i-VCT system uses a hydraulically actuated spool valve to control the movement of the cam phaser and can rotate up to 40 degrees, shifting within less than half a second.Efficient Combustion Plus a Hard-Working Catalyst Equals Ultra-Low Emissions
Careful attention to detail in both the combustion system and exhaust after-treatment has produced an exceptionally clean operating engine. The powertrain team focused on four significant enhancements that aid in delivering an ultra-clean and reliable engine:
The high 10.3:1 compression ratio effectively lowers emissions while improving both power and fuel economy. Low heat-loss exhaust manifolds and close-coupled catalysts for fast light-off during cold-start help minimize cold-start emissions before the catalysts reach operating temperature.
Optimized fuel injector targeting also helps in minimizing cold-start emissions. Centrally located spark plugs increase the engine’s thermal efficiency.
Edge is expected to be rated for ultra-low emission vehicle (ULEV) II tailpipe emissions in California and receive a U.S. Environmental Protection Agency rating of Tier II/Bin 5 tailpipe and low-emission vehicle (LEV) II evaporative emissions in other states.
All-new, Class-Exclusive 6-speed Delivers Smooth, Efficient Performance
Edge comes standard with an all-new, class-exclusive 6-speed transaxle that improves fuel efficiency up to 7 percent in highway driving over 4-speed transmissions while offering better performance and smoother, more precise shifts.
“Ford is taking a leadership position in 6-speed automatic transmissions,” says Samardzich. “With the introduction of the Ford Edge, we will have a dozen models with 6-speed automatics in our showrooms, and more on the way.”
The 6F uses a wide-ratio 6.04:1 gear span to deliver maximum performance and fuel economy. The low 4.48:1 first gear provides tremendous acceleration at launch while the tall, 0.74:1 overdrive sixth gear provides exceptional fuel economy. Short steps between intermediate gears enhance performance and feel by finding the right gear for the most efficient operating conditions. 6F Design Delivers Impressive NVH
The elimination of noise, vibration and harshness (NVH) was a high priority of the development team. Every area of the transmission was scrutinized to provide smooth, quiet operation.
Powertrain engineers focused on the design of the interface between the engine and transmission to nearly eliminate the bending that occurs under acceleration, resulting in smooth launches and shifts.
Extensive use of CAE modeling on the transmission case built a solid housing for the transmission components. Engineers used analysis to determine exactly where strengthening ribs and wall thickness were needed to minimize radiated noise and vibration.
The three simple planetary gearsets are designed for robustness and use low-pinion pitch line velocities to reduce noise.
All gears are cut using high-precision CNC cutting machines. The transfer and final drive gears are hard finished, providing a more precise fit, reducing gear whine.
Unlike many transmissions where the gears are “green finished” (shaped and then heat treated) these “big gears” are treated and then finish machined. After grinding, the gears are honed or polished to remove “ghost lines” – the microscopic undulations left in the surfaces of the teeth after shaping. This additional step results in a 50 percent improvement in tolerances and greatly reduces gear-to-gear noise. Innovative Control Strategy Improves Shift Quality
A single intelligent control module shared by the Duratec 35 and 6F transmission has a learning function that collects data each time the transmission shifts, measures the response and improves shift quality by adjusting shift parameters.
To ensure the best possible shift quality, each 6F transmission is bench tested at FordTo ensure the best possible shift quality, each 6F transmission is bench tested at Ford’s Van Dyke ( Mich.) Transmission Plant. There, the transmission build quality is verified, detecting even minute variations in the manufacturing process. Unique software programmed into the powertrain control module individually trims and characterizes all solenoids and clutches to compensate for variances that normally would lead to changes in shift feel. This strategy produces smooth, precisely controlled shifts that improve durability and customer satisfaction.Ford Motor Company, a global automotive industry leader based in Dearborn, Mich., manufactures and distributes automobiles in 200 markets across six continents.
