18 Blogs Responsible for the 100 Most Popular Posts Of 2006
'mother.livejournal.com', 'Crooks and Liars' and 'Sifry's Alerts' and 'Michelle Malkin' Among the Authors of the Most Linked-to Standalone Posts
December 28, 2006 -- A small cluster of power bloggers -- focused on politics, blogging and humor -- were responsible for the top 100 blog posts for 2006, according to word-of-mouth measurement firm Nielsen BuzzMetrics. The top blog -- based on the number of inbound links from other blogs between January 1 and November 30, 2006 -- was mother.livejournal.com's petition against changes in the livejournal interface. The single post was linked to in 801 posts by 786 other blogs.
"A minority of highly influential blogs continues to influence the broader conversation on the web," said Jonathan Carson, CEO, Nielsen BuzzMetrics. "However, unique circumstances and events, such as the LiveJournal protest against proposed interface changes, can resonate with passionate stakeholders and catapult lesser-known blogs to the top."
Crooks and Liars' posts on Stephen Colbert's monologue at the White House, and Keith Olbermann commentary on Rumsfeld, were the number 2 and 3 posts, respectively. The Colbert post was linked to in 622 posts on 603 blogs, and the Olbermann was linked to in 359 posts on 340 blogs.
David Sifry, founder and CEO of blog-search engine Technorati, had the fourth most popular post, with his latest state-of-the-blogosphere report. The post was linked to in 339 posts on 298 blogs.

AFI AWARDS 2006 Moments of Significance Announced
Seventh Annual AFI Almanac Names Eight Moments of Significance in Film and TV for the Year
Dec. 27 -- The American Film Institute (AFI) today announced the second portion of the AFI AWARDS 2006 deliberation process -- the year's AFI Moments of Significance. These eight noteworthy events were determined to have had an impact on the world of the moving image during the calendar year 2006.
Each year, AFI AWARDS adds another volume to the history of American film and television by documenting the collective opinion of the moving image communities, archiving the year's significant moments and honoring the talent and collaborative teams who have created the year's outstanding accomplishments. Ten AFI Movies of the Year and 10 AFI Television Programs of the Year were announced earlier this month. A complete list of the 2006 official selections and the 2006 juries can be found at www.AFI.com.
AFI AWARDS 2006 selections were made through AFI's unique 13-person jury process in which scholars, film artists, critics and AFI trustees discuss, debate and determine the most outstanding achievements of the year, as well as highlight these significant events that shape our culture. Two AFI juries -- one for motion pictures and one for television -- convened in Los Angeles for two days of deliberations.
AFI will honor the creative ensembles for each of the honorees at a luncheon sponsored by Hewlett-Packard on Friday, January 12, 2007 at the Four Seasons Hotel in Los Angeles, California.
CRITERIA
AFI Moments of Significance may include accomplishments of considerable merit; influences with either a positive or negative impression; trends, either new or re-emerging; anniversaries or memorials of special note; and/or movements in new technologies, education, preservation, government or other areas that impact the art film, television and digital media.
The AFI Moments of Significance selections are listed below: AFI MOMENTS OF SIGNIFICANCE CLINT EASTWOOD -- A NATIONAL TREASURE
Clint Eastwood released two major motion pictures in 2006. This is a significant achievement alone, but that FLAGS OF OUR FATHERS and LETTERS FROM IWO JIMA tell the story of the same battle in World War II while presenting the points of view of the opposing sides marks a moment of significance for post 9/11 cinema.
The films not only complement one another, but they resonate together to create one of the great motion picture experiences of the new century.
Eastwood and his team of collaborators -- including producers Steven Spielberg and Robert Lorenz, writer Paul Haggis, cinematographer Tom Stern, editor Joel Cox, production designer Henry Bumstead and casting director Phyllis Huffman -- provide an epic reminder that the American viewpoint is not the only human perspective.
THE DOCUMENTARY SPEAKS TO THE WORLD
In 2006, it was the documentary that best illustrated the power of film and television to bring us together as a global audience -- and, with hope, to affect change.
In theatres, AN INCONVENIENT TRUTH premiered in the United States and began a journey around the world, raising the level of debate about global warming. Directed by Davis Guggenheim and starring former Vice President Al Gore, this documentary presents the argument that we can no longer afford to look at the effects of greenhouse gasses as a political issue, but we must see it as a moral one.
Also of note is IRAQ IN FRAGMENTS, a film by director James Longley, who documented the experience of Sunnis, Shiites and Kurds in war-torn Iraq.
In television, WHEN THE LEVEES BROKE sets the standard for documentaries that fuse epic scope and human detail. Spike Lee's masterwork about the effects of Hurricane Katrina on New Orleans revitalized the debate about what it is to be abandoned by your government. BAGHDAD ER and COMBAT HOSPITAL also stand out among the year's best documentaries, exhibiting a texture and depth that is necessary to understand their complex issues.
YOUTUBE REDEFINES "THE TUBE"
Though audience participation continues to have an enormous impact on television, with cultural hits like DANCING WITH THE STARS and AMERICAN IDOL reliant on interactivity, the true cultural phenomenon for 2006 is the dawn of a new era of participatory television -- via the personal computer.
The explosive growth and domination of YouTube as the pre-eminent site for uploading, viewing and sharing video clips on the World Wide Web signifies the awakening of an age when the audience is both producer and distributor.
The impact of self-produced media is currently most profound as it relates to documenting events of the day that would have otherwise gone unnoticed. Cell phones and video cameras capture police brutality, racial slurs and other events that are then "broadcast" around the world. Most notably for 2006, George Allen, a front-runner in the Virginia Senate race, referred to a man of Indian descent as "macaca" and the footage was first seen around the world on YouTube. It was one of several issues that Allen's campaign struggled to control, and he lost the race.
TV NEWS MIGRATES TO THE INTERNET ... AND FROM FACT TO FICTION
2006 marked a year when network and cable news became far less significant in the echo chamber of the Internet, and the fusion of journalism and comedy continued to impact the political scene.
The flashpoint for this moment took place when Stephen Colbert, star of THE COLBERT REPORT on Comedy Central, was the featured speaker at the 2006 White House Correspondents' Association Dinner. Colbert's routine, performed in character as his faux-politically conservative news anchor, roasted President George W. Bush and his administration's policies as the President sat a few feet away, and the entire room appeared uncomfortable.
Colbert's performance aired on C-SPAN, but became an Internet sensation, providing a defining shift in the way the 2006 midterm elections were perceived and discussed by a younger generation.
VHS IS DEAD, LONG LIVE THE DIGITAL FUTURE
2006 marks the end of production of the VHS cassette -- and with its passing, the term "Be Kind, Rewind" is erased from the American lexicon.
Released to the consumer market in 1976 by JVC, the VHS format transformed the way the world watched the movies and, because of its popularity, changed the way movies were made and marketed.
2006 is also a watershed year in the way motion pictures are distributed to consumers. Theatrical experiments continue -- Steven Soderbergh's BUBBLE became the first motion picture released in theatres the same day it was available on HDTV and four days later on DVD. And Morgan Freeman's ClickStar, a joint venture between Intel and Freeman's Revelations production company, released 10 ITEMS OR LESS, the first feature film to premiere in theatres and then become available via broadband within two weeks of its national release.
The legal market for digital downloading became a reality in 2006 as full-length feature films are now available via cellular phones, Internet sites and through special DVD agreements with retail stores. The field continues to be lead by iTunes, which offers hundreds of television episodes and select movie titles.
Though the economic viability of these models is uncertain, their collective direction marks a moment when a global audience enjoys unprecedented access to the movies.
HAVE YOU NO SHAME? TELEVISION SAYS YES.
2006 marked a moment when what didn't air on television was as compelling as what did.
When FOX announced that it was to broadcast an interview with O.J. Simpson, who would hypothetically detail how he would have killed his wife, Nicole Brown Simpson, and her friend, Ronald Goldman, the decisive outcry from the audience, affiliates and advertisers caused FOX to cancel the broadcast.
The cancellation showed that a moral standard still exists for television, albeit a limit that had to be pushed to an extreme to be of note. That it was self-regulated, however, and not legislated by the government, is cause to celebrate.
NETWORKS FIGHT BACK
The pendulum of America's dialogue on free speech swung back in 2006 as ABC, CBS, NBC, FOX and several of their affiliates filed a challenge to a Federal Communications Commission ruling that cited several incidents of "indecent" language.
This represented a rare galvanizing moment for the television community, which sees the FCC's rulings, penalties and fines as vague and inconsistent and has asked the agency to provide a clear definition of its terms of indecency.
ROBERT ALTMAN -- 1925-2006
Robert Altman passed away in 2006 at the age of 81. In a career that spanned over 50 years, Altman was a true maverick of American film. His body of work -- both in film and television -- reflects an exceptional diversity in genre, but always with his indelible signature. From overlapping dialogue to the epic ensemble pieces filled with actors who revered him, Altman's style continues to inspire artists and audiences alike. AFI will ensure that his films will live forever -- M*A*S*H, NASHVILLE, McCABE AND MRS. MILLER, THE PLAYER, GOSFORD PARK and many more.
About the American Film Institute
AFI is a national institute providing leadership in screen education and the recognition and celebration of excellence in the art of film, television and digital media. AFI trains the next generation of filmmakers at its world-renowned Conservatory, maintains America's film heritage through the AFI Catalog of Feature Films and explores new digital technologies in entertainment and education through the AFI Digital Content Lab and K-12 Screen Education Center. As the largest nonprofit exhibitor in the US, AFI ON SCREEN encompasses the annual AFI FEST presented by Audi: AFI Los Angeles International Film Festival -- as well as year-round programming at ArcLight Hollywood and the AFI Silver Theatre and Cultural Center in Silver Spring, Maryland, including SILVERDOCS: AFI/Discovery Channel Documentary Festival. AFI AWARDS, the annual almanac for the 21st century, honors the most outstanding motion pictures and television programs of the year, while AFI's 100 Years . . . series has ignited extraordinary public interest in classic American movies. And, during the past 34 years, AFI's Life Achievement Award has become the highest honor for a career in film. Additional information about AFI is available at AFI.com.

POW! Entertainment Gains Foothold in Sixty Billion Dollar Wireless Market
Dec. 26 POW! Entertainment had the foresight early on to form strategic alliances and develop mobile content to lock in a firm position in the burgeoning wireless marketplace, as reported by Inside Wallstreet Report. After nearly two years in development, POW!'s efforts have paid off in a very big way: Sprint, the nation's most powerful wireless network, in their press release issued Friday, has officially listed Stan Lee's POW! Mobile Channel as Sprint's Channel 70.
On Friday's news, Sprint stock gained 1.56%, while POW! Entertainment was up 12.24%.
Stan Lee's POW! Mobile Channel can now be accessed by Sprint's Power Vision subscribers, right along with The Cartoon Network, The Weather Channel, ESPN, Fox Sports, Comedy Central, Hollywood Insider, Universal Pictures, Nickelodeon, MTV, ABC News Now, Hanna-Barbera, NFL Network, Saturday Morning TV, Looney Tunes, Warner Brothers Trailers, Sirius Music, Primetime TV, Sony Pictures Trailers, VH1, CNN toGo, and other Sprint channels. This makes POW! ENTERTAINMENT part of one of the world's largest mobile broadband networks.
The Sprint Power Vision platform is a great fit for POW!'s founder Stan Lee, the creative genius behind Spiderman*, X-Men*, Fantastic Four*, Daredevil* and now Stan Lee's POW! Mobile Channel, which comes just in time for the holidays.
"Holiday travelers will see that it doesn't matter whether grandma has cable, or if you get stuck in the airport for hours. You'll always have access to hours of entertaining live and on-demand programming with Sprint TV on a Sprint Power Vision phone," said Alana Muller, director of product marketing for Sprint. The company also announced wireless partnership with "The Ellen DeGeneres Show," which is now available as Sprint's Channel 76.
Stan Lee's POW! Entertainment, Inc. announced in early 2005 that they formed a strategic partnership to develop a new mobile channel with mobile- streaming pioneer Vidiator(TM). Vidiator is a world leader in downloadable content delivery technologies for mobile streaming and has patents allowing mobile operators to offer premium multimedia applications. Through Vidiator's state-of-the-art mobile streaming technology, POW! gained the capability to seamlessly deliver its original "Stan Lee Presents" releases to major wireless carriers throughout the world.
"The streaming and 3-D technology, developed by Vidiator since 1998, has matured to the point that video and 3-D can be combined into innovative mobile multimedia content," said Connie Wong, Vidiator's CEO. "The 'Mobisodes' we have created with Stan Lee are the first of their kind in the mobile multimedia market. I am pleased beyond words to bring POW! Mobile content to the wireless world and to catapult mobile entertainment into a new era."
The US wireless market, according to reports from CITA-the Wireless Association(TM), has an estimated 224,347,047 wireless subscribers, and, in the first six months of 2006, revenues of $60.5 billion, up 8.6% over the first half of 2005. Additional data from the Wireless World Forum's "USA Mobile Market 2006" Statistical Handbook reveals that revenues from US Operators alone will grow by another $20 billion dollars in 2007.
Mobile Phones and PDAs are rapidly transforming into "pay-for-play" video streaming entertainment devices. There are now over two billion wireless subscribers worldwide experiencing this exciting transformation of their cell phones. The large entertainment conglomerates, including many of the major motion picture studios-deeply entrenched in traditional income streams- are just now waking up to the future and aggressively trying to position themselves for a portion of the wireless market share, as major wireless service providers armed with new video streaming technologies are now vying for entertainment content to deliver to their enormous subscriber base.
As a team, POW! and Vidiator have significant market share in this new niche, introducing projects that combine Vidiator's patented video streaming technologies and contemporary Stan Lee Original content, adapted for mobile applications. This type of content is exactly what companies like Sprint need to fill the huge demand for compelling mobile entertainment, giving them a substantial advantage over competitive carriers. The partnership creates a perfect and timely marriage at a time when mobile entertainment revenues begin to grow exponentially and demand for content accelerates to new levels.
"In Asia, most people walking down the street are now holding cell phones in front of them, looking at streaming videos," Stan Lee jokes. "They're bumping into things, which is great for the Band-Aid business!"
What the jovial and innovative Lee didn't mention is just how great this is for POW!'s business, as well. Based on the company's revenue-sharing distribution and licensing agreement, POW! will earn a percentage of sales from downloads of its programs. As a result, the company believes it will add significant revenues in 2007.

Elvis Still Reigns as King in Most Popular Stamp Ranking
Dec. 26 While the 1993 Elvis stamp continues to hold court as the most popular stamp of all time with more than 124 million collected, three sets of stamps issued during 2006 rank among the top 10, Postmaster General John E. Potter announced today.
"Stamp collecting continues as one of the world's most popular educational hobbies that the entire family can enjoy," Potter said in announcing the 25 most popular stamps of all time. "Three stamp subjects issued this year were extremely popular: Wonders of America, Land of Superlatives, came in at number two for all time with more than 87 million collected; DC Comics Super Heroes hit number five with 73 million; and, Art of Disney: Romance was number eight with more than 57 million."
Since 1988, the Postal Service has annually surveyed more than 10,000 households to determine the number and types of stamps purchased versus stamps saved.
The Postal Service receives stamp ideas from about 50,000 people every year, yet only 20 to 25 subjects make the cut. To narrow down the selection, the Postmaster General's Citizens' Stamp Advisory Committee -- a cross section of designers, historians and academics -- reviews the suggestions and make recommendations to the Postmaster General for final approval.
"The fact that 10 of the top 25 were issued in the last three years serves as a testament to the Committee's expertise in selecting dynamic subjects and America's continued interest in the hobby," he added.
This year proved to be the best ever for stamp shows. The Washington 2006 World Philatelic Exhibition -- as the world's largest stamp show and held only once every decade in the U.S. -- attracted nearly 140 postal administrations and more than 200 stamp dealers to showcase the world's rarest stamp collections worth hundreds of millions of dollars to nearly a quarter of a million visitors.
The Postal Service encourages individuals with stamp ideas to submit their suggestions in writing to:

Since 1775, the United States Postal Service and its predecessor, the Post Office Department, have connected friends, families, neighbors and businesses by mail. An independent federal agency that visits more than 146 million homes and businesses every day, the Postal Service is the only service provider delivering to every address in the nation. It receives no taxpayer dollars for routine operations, but derives its operating revenues solely from the sale of postage, products and services. With annual revenues of $72 billion, it is the world's leading provider of mailing and delivery services, offering some of the most affordable postage rates in the world. The U.S. Postal Service delivers more than 46 percent of the world's mail volume -- some 213 billion letters, advertisements, periodicals and packages a year -- and serves ten million customers each day at its 37,000 retail locations nationwide.

JAMES BROWN
James Brown has had more honorifics attached to his name than any other performer in music history. He has variously been tagged "Soul Brother Number One," "the Godfather of Soul," "the Hardest Working Man in Show Business," "Mr. Dynamite" and even "the Original Disco Man." This much is certain: what became known as soul music in the Sixties, funk music in the Seventies and rap music in the Eighties is directly attributable to James Brown. His transformation of gospel fervor into the taut, explosive intensity of rhythm & blues, combined with precision choreography and dynamic showmanship, served to define the directions black music would take from the release of his first R&B hit ("Please Please Please") in 1956 to the present day.
Brown's life history documents one triumph over adversity after another. He was born into poverty in Barnwell, South Carolina, during the Great Depression. As a child, he picked cotton, danced for spare change and shined shoes. At 16, he was caught and convicted of stealing, and he landed in reform school for three years. While incarcerated, he met Bobby Byrd, leader of a gospel group that performed at the prison. After his release, Brown tried his hand at semipro boxing and baseball. A career-ending leg injury inspired him to pursue music fulltime. He joined Byrd in a group that sang gospel in and around Toccoa, Georgia. But then Byrd and Brown attended a rhythm & blues revue that included Hank Ballard and Fats Domino, whose performances lured them into the realm of secular music. Renaming themselves the Flames (later, the Famous Flames), they became a tightly knit ensemble that showcased their abundant talents as singers, dancers and multi-instrumentalists.
Brown rose to the fore as leader of the James Brown Revue - an entourage complete with emcee, dancers and an untouchable stage band (the J.B.'s). Reportedly sweating off up to seven pounds a night, Brown was a captivating performer who'd incorporate a furious regimen of spins, drops and shtick (such as feigning a heart attack, complete with the ritual donning and doffing of capes and a fevered return to the stage) into his skintight rhythm & blues. What Elvis Presley was to rock and roll, James Brown became to R&B: a prolific and dominant phenom. Like Presley, he is a three-figure hitmaker, with 114 total entries on Billboard's R&B singles charts and 94 that made the Hot 100 singles chart. Over the years, he amassed 800 songs in his repertoire while maintaining a grueling touring schedule. Recording for the King and Federal labels throughout the Fifties and Sixties, Brown distilled R&B to its essence on such classic albums as Live at the Apollo (patterned after Ray Charles' In Person) and singles like "Cold Sweat," "Papa's Got a Brand New Bag" and "I Got You (I Feel Good)." His group, the J.B.'s, was anchored by horn players and musical mainstays Fred Wesley and Maceo Parker. Brown also recorded a series of instrumental albums, taking a break from soul shouting to pursue his prowess as an organist.
By the late Sixties, Brown had attained the status of a musical and cultural revolutionary, owing to his message of black pride and self-sufficiency. In the late Sixties and early Seventies, such message songs as "Say It Loud - I'm Black and I'm Proud" reverberated throughout the black community, within which he was regarded as a leader and role model. During this time, he began developing a hot funk sound with young musicians, such as bassist William "Bootsy" Collins, who passed through his ever-evolving band. Though his influence waned in the latter half of the Seventies, a cameo role in The Blues Brothers film in 1980 and his recognition as a forefather of rap helped trigger a resurgence. His records were more heavily sampled by rap and hip-hop acts than those of any other artist, and he achieved renewed street credibility by recording a single ("Unity") with rapper Afrika Bambaataa in 1984. Brown was among the first group of performers inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1986. Unfortunately, his personal life took a nose-dive in 1988, as he was investigated on a series of charges that ranged from spousal abuse and drug possession to problems with the IRS. Paroled after serving two years in prison, a chastened but resolute Brown picked up the pieces in the Nineties and carried on. If nothing else, his status as the Godfather of Soul has remained unassailable. In December 2003, only months after his 70th birthday, James Brown was the recipient of the prestigious Kennedy Center Honors.

James Brown's Industry Creating Hits
1956: "Please, Please, Please" This begging ballad about a man trying to keep his woman took on a raw, sensual tone as Brown growled and yelped through the burning track.
1959: "Try Me" Another slow R&B groove from a pleading Brown.
1961: "Bewildered" Brown's she-done-me-wrong classic. He shrieks and shouts passionately, "bewildered" by the actions of his now-former woman.
1962: "Night Train" One of the first songs to feature the tight, jumping horn section that would become a cornerstone of most of his major hits. Brown's rough-edged voice shouts out cities nationwide on the "Night Train" route.
1965: "Papa's Got a Brand New Bag (Part I)" Another classic dance track about what else dancing.
1965: "I Got You (I Feel Good)" Perhaps Brown's most famous tune, and one of the all-time greatest songs in rock's canon. A buoyant, joyful jam that is an instant party starter. If you've never heard this, you've never heard music.
1966: "It's a Man's Man's Man's World" Though the title may suggest a chauvinistic ode, this passionate, downbeat track really pays homage to a man's eternal need for a woman by his side.
1967: "Cold Sweat (Part I)" A smoking, sultry mid-tempo jam that features Brown singing about a woman that makes him weak-kneed. It was sampled by dozens, perhaps hundreds of '80s rap songs.
1968: "Say it Loud - I'm Black and I'm Proud (Part 1)" Released at the height of the civil rights movement, this anthem boldly asserted pride in being black at a time when African-Americans were still fighting for basic rights.
1970: "Get Up (I Feel Like Being Like A) Sex Machine" (Part 1)" Despite its somewhat risque title, this frenetic groove is more of a call to move your feet. Perhaps Brown's second most-famous song, its signature is its slamming rhythm section.
1971: "Make It Funky (Part 1) This could be the theme song of Brown's entire career. It begins with Brown saying what would become his motto: "(Whatever) I play, it's got to be funky!"
1974: "Papa Don't Take No Mess, (Part I): Brown's amazing, funky tribute to a hard-nosed, stern dad.
1974: "The Payback (Part I)": The ultimate revenge song, this song sounded as if it would fit right in with many of the blaxploitation soundtracks of the day with its blaring horns and rumbling bass lines.
1976: "Get Up Offa That Thing": A killer bass instead of horns are the real glue of this James Brown classic dance groove.

Song to Be Auctioned on eBay Jan. 19th, 2007
Winning bid will have controlling interest to the Elvis
Presley-Paul Terry King song registered on BMI.com as work
number 7600186.
Dec. 21, 2006 -- Songwriter Paul Terry King
(co-author of the last known song composed but never
released by Elvis) is now auctioning off his copyrighted
interest to the song titled, "Just Like Rollin' Up Hill"
(registered under Elvis Presley's BMI work number 7600186 on
BMI.com).
Elvis Presley and former American Studios songwriter Paul
Terry King co-wrote two songs in 1973 and performed them
privately - "If I'd Only Bought Her Roses" and "Just Like
Rollin' Up Hill."
"If I'd Only Bought Her Roses," US copyright PAu-1810-413,
was purchased by Elvis-A-Rama in 2005. Elvis-A-Rama was
planning an Elvis impersonation contest with the winning
contestant singing "If I'd Only Bought Her Roses."
The song (along with remaining assets of Elvis-A-Rama) were
purchased by billionaire Robert Sillerman's company CKX in
2005 for an undisclosed amount prior to release.
Sillerman purchased an 80% stake in Graceland in 2004 and
last year acquired the hit show American Idol. To date
Sillerman has let Elvis Presley's last known song, "Just
Like Rollin' Up Hill," slip through the cracks. You can hear
it on http://www.ElvisSong.info.
So, devoted fans, music enthusiasts, entrepreneurs and/or
entertainers can now bid and get copyright and performance
rights to one of the most prized possessions of the King
himself, his music.
"It's Now or Never!": Sillerman is acquiring everything
Elvis. This opportunity will never be available to the
public again.
The song will be available to the public for auction on eBay
Jan. 19th, 2007. Bid opens at $10,000 at 5 PM PST. To listen
to song, press inquiries, etc., go to
http://www.ElvisSong.info or contact eBay powerseller Mike

Kid Rock to Spend Christmas With U.S. Troops Stationed in Iraq and Kuwait
December 21, 2006 -- Atlantic recording artist Kid Rock has announced he's going to the Middle East to spend Christmas with the troops. The Detroit Cowboy will once again visit U.S. military personnel stationed in the Middle East, with an itinerary that sees him spending the upcoming holiday season alongside troops currently serving in both Kuwait and Iraq. The trip is sponsored by Armed Forces Entertainment and America Supports You.
"This year for Christmas I wanted to make sure somebody was thanking our troops for their service, no matter what our views are on the current situation in Iraq. I would be spending Christmas with my family, but in my heart I know this is the right thing to do -- not only for our men and women in service, but also to set an example for my son and send a strong message to the world to be thankful and think of others at Christmas time."
As the official Department of Defense agency for providing entertainment to U.S. military personnel overseas, Armed Forces Entertainment and its performers have the honor of supporting soldiers, airmen, marines and sailors by bringing them the very best in American entertainment.
Armed Forces Entertainment hosts over 1,200 shows around the world each year, reaching over 500,000 personnel at 270 military installations. From muddy makeshift stages to show-stopping extravaganzas, the performances bring a piece of home to those stationed far away from home.
Armed Forces Entertainment is proud to present our troops the finest American entertainment and proud to represent the thousands of entertainers who have volunteered their time to give them a well-deserved break from the action.
America Supports You is a nationwide program launched by the Department of Defense, recognizing citizens' support for our military men and women and communicating that support to members of our Armed Forces at home and abroad.
All across America, thousands of individual citizens, businesses, and groups -- from local schools and establishments to nationally known corporations and organizations -- are hosting events and undertaking projects to support America's Armed Forces, especially in forward-deployed areas. The support of the American people builds and sustains the morale of those fighting, and communicates America's recognition and appreciation of their courage and commitment to our country.
The America Supports You program spotlights what Americans are doing all across the land, encourages others to join the team, and allows all to tell their stories by giving voice and visibility to their efforts.

IMDb.com's Top Movie Stars of 2006
Johnny Depp Swashbuckles to the Top of the IMDb.com's STARmeter for Third Consecutive Year; Angelina Jolie, Jessica Alba, Brad Pitt, and Scarlett Johansson Round Out the Top Five
Dec. 21, 2006 IMDb.com (http://www.imdb.com), the site for movies, TV, celebrities and more, today unveiled the top 25 stars of 2006 as determined by the site's STARmeter, which ranks celebrities' popularity among IMDb.com's more than 42 million unique monthly visitors. Johnny Depp, the 2004 and 2005 winner, once again generated the most fan interest this year, followed by headline-making couple Angelina Jolie (No. 2) and Brad Pitt (No. 4), as well as Hollywood beauties Jessica Alba (No. 3) and Scarlett Johansson (No. 5).
Dropping slightly in the rankings this year were gossip column regulars Lindsay Lohan and Paris Hilton, sliding to the No. 7 and No. 9 spots respectively. Other notable drops in rank include Keanu Reeves, Eva Longoria, Robert De Niro, Vin Diesel, Jon Heder of Napoleon Dynamite fame, and Nicole Kidman, who all lost their spots in the IMDb.com STARmeter Top 25 this year.
Newcomers to the top 25 in 2006 include Jake Gyllenhaal (No. 17), Zac Efron from High School Musical (No. 19), Heath Ledger (No. 21), Bruce Willis (No. 23) and Reese Witherspoon (No. 24). After reaching the ninth spot in 2004, Kate Beckinsale dropped off the list last year before making her return to the list (No. 14) on the strength of Underworld: Evolution and Click. The full list of the year's top 25 celebrities can be seen in IMDb.com's "Road to the Oscars" section or at http://www.imdb.com/starmeter.
"IMDb.com's STARmeter is uniquely able to assess the actual popularity of celebrities by basing the list on the use patterns of visitors on the site," said Keith Simanton, managing editor, IMDb.com. "For example, there appears to be a perennial, if probably clandestine, fascination with Hilary Duff; her only film of the year was the little-seen Material Girls but she still finds herself at No. 15. You can also see the ardent fan base for actors that people might not think of as big stars. This is Christian Bale's second year on the list at No. 13. Last year it could be explained with his breakout role in Batman Returns. This year, though he was in a modest hit, The Prestige, his co-star in the film, Hugh Jackman, topped out at No. 40, even though he was also in the blockbuster X-Men 3: The Last Stand."
There were several notable personalities who just missed the top 25 list, including Anne Hathaway (No. 26), despite her star role in the wildly successful movie The Devil Wears Prada.
Available through IMDb.com's subscription service, IMDbPro.com (http://www.imbdpro.com), the STARmeter ranks celebrities' weekly popularity based on the actual search behavior of the more than 42 million industry professionals and film enthusiasts who use IMDb.com each month. The STARmeter does not reflect box-office performance or critical assessments. The list of the year's top 25 celebrities is an aggregate of 2006's weekly STARmeter rankings.
Today, IMDb also released its "best" and "worst" of 2006 polls featuring numerous categories including best actor, best actress and best film to name a few. These lists can be found at http://www.imdb.com/best2006 or http://www.imdb.com/worst2006.

Paolo Nutini Sets First Major U.S. Tour; Scottish Sensation Heralds Debut Album With Performances on The "Today" Show and "Late Night With Conan O'Brien"; "These Streets" in Stores January 30th
December 21, 2006 -- Atlantic recording artist Paolo Nutini has announced details of his first full-scale tour of North America. The headlining itinerary heralds the U.S. release of the Scotland-born singer/songwriter's acclaimed debut album, "THESE STREETS." The album -- which includes "New Shoes," a Top 10 single at Triple A radio -- lands in stores on January 30th. Nutini is also slated to make a number of major TV appearances in support of "THESE STREETS," starting on January 30th with a visit to NBC's "Late Night with Conan O'Brien." The following morning, January 31st, Paolo will perform on NBC's "Today" Show. The appearances follow Paolo's two recent performances on his fellow Scotsman Craig Ferguson's nightly CBS talker, "Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson."
The 20-year-old Nutini will kick off his Stateside tour in Chicago on January 25th, with dates continuing through March (see attached itinerary). Among the trek's highlights are much-anticipated shows at New York City's Bowery Ballroom on January 31st and Los Angeles' legendary Troubadour on March 23rd.
Born and raised in Paisley, Scotland, Nutini has quickly become a true star in the UK, where "THESE STREETS" made a spectacular top 3 chart entry this summer, receiving gold certification less than 2 weeks later amidst a flurry of critical acclaim. Uncut Magazine awarded "THESE STREETS" four-out-of-five stars, noting that "For once, comparisons with the great Al Green are not entirely far-fetched." The Observer hailed Nutini as having "a talent for elegant, melodic songwriting." "THESE STREETS" has now been certified double platinum in the UK, and has gone on to sell over 700,000 copies. In addition, "THESE STREETS" has been certified gold in France and has shipped over one million copies across Europe.
Produced by Ken Nelson (Coldplay, Ray LaMontagne, Badly Drawn Boy), the album is driven by impassioned blue-eyed soul stunners, including the stirring title track and the rousing single, "New Shoes." The track -- which was recently iTunes' "Single of the Week" -- is currently climbing the top 10 at Triple A outlets nationwide. Hailed by Billboard as one of their "Five To Watch," and named one of Rolling Stone's "10 Artists To Watch 2006," Nutini released his North American debut EP, "THE LIVE SESSIONS," earlier this year. The four-track collection drew instant rave reviews, spurring the New York Daily News' Jim Farber to declare Paolo to be "the most thrilling new singer of the season."
Like so many of the most important artists who have emerged from the UK, Nutini has absorbed the soul of the great American R&B singers and channeled it into something original, captivating, and dynamic. Inspired by classic rock and soul stars like the Drifters and Ray Charles, as well as such troubadours as John Martyn and Van Morrison, Nutini left his native Scotland at 17 and moved to London, where he started performing regularly at clubs around town. His bold voice and provocative songs created an instant buzz. Nutini signed to Atlantic Records shortly after his 18th birthday and headed north to Liverpool to work on his debut album with renowned producer Nelson.
Nutini immediately captured widespread attention via tour dates supporting the likes of the Rolling Stones and Paul Weller, in addition to making sensational TV appearances on "Top of the Pops" and "Later with Jools Holland." In May 2006, he appeared at the New York Pops Birthday Gala at Carnegie Hall at the personal request of the evening's honoree -- Atlantic Records Founding Chairman Ahmet Ertegun. Two months later, Nutini brought the house down during a special tribute to Ertegun and Atlantic Records at the Montreux Jazz Festival. The only new artist on the bill, Nutini shared the stage with such icons as Solomon Burke, Robert Plant, and Kid Rock. One of Paolo's heroes, soul legend Ben E. King, was so impressed that he invited him on stage to sing with him, an amazing moment for the young singer.

Next-Generation Headset Combines Advanced, Award-Winning Technology and Industrial Design for Clearer, More Comfortable Conversations
December 21, 2006 -- Noise is nothing with the new Jawbone Bluetooth headset, which is available exclusively from Cingular Wireless--just in time for the holidays.
Aliph, a leading developer of mobile audio products that deliver exceptional quality in any environment, and Cingular Wireless, the nation's largest wireless carrier, today introduced the new Jawbone headset for Bluetooth mobile phones. Jawbone™ is the first adaptive Bluetooth headset with Noise Shield® technology, which virtually eliminates background noise so calls are clearer. Jawbone's audio performance is further enhanced by an award-winning design by internationally acclaimed product designer Yves Béhar, which maximizes comfort and functional simplicity.
Ambient noise is often an issue with many headsets and can make conversations difficult in noisier environments. The Jawbone Bluetooth headset with Noise Shield technology uses an advanced, military-grade noise-canceling system that continuously adapts to users' changing environments to deliver unparalleled audio quality.
The Noise Shield technology was originally developed by Aliph for DARPA (The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency) to enhance communications in the most hostile and rugged environments. This technology includes an intelligent system of sensors and software, which continuously adjusts—at a rate of 500 times per second—to improve audio quality based on what it knows about the environment. In doing this, the Jawbone headset will:
Identify and isolate your speech: Jawbone is the only headset that has a proprietary voice activity sensor. Its ability to determine precisely when you are speaking is what drives the headset's superior sound quality. Unlike other headsets, Jawbone can easily separate your speech from other sounds nearby.
Subtract the unwanted noise: Jawbone's proprietary software continuously samples the sounds in your environment, and then subtracts those sounds from your speech signal. This allows you to speak normally in any environment while still being heard clearly when placing calls.
Automatically enhance your audio: Jawbone constantly adapts, allowing you to hear your caller better by boosting the frequencies that increase voice intelligibility to stand out over your environment.
"We endeavored to build the first headset all users will actually want to wear," said Hosain Rahman, Aliph CEO and co-founder. "We've always led the industry from a technology perspective, now we've integrated that adaptive technology into a Bluetooth headset that is simple, intuitive, and easy to use – the total product experience has been designed around how consumers actually use wearable technology. As an innovator in wireless communications, Cingular is the perfect partner to bring the new Jawbone to market."
"Jawbone is the first Bluetooth headset that adjusts and optimizes both incoming and outgoing sound so you can conquer the problems of a noisy, unpredictable world," said David Christopher, Vice President, Product Management, Cingular Wireless. "Today's consumers may often find themselves having conversations in less than ideal environments. With Jawbone, our customers can now make phone calls comfortably in high-traffic, high noise locations. We are pleased to be the first wireless carrier worldwide to bring this unique, best-in-class product to market."
Jawbone has a perforated shield that curves to match the outline of the face, while the soft and smooth underside provides a comfortable feel on the skin. Only 14 grams, Jawbone feels very light on the head and can be worn on either ear. Earloops in four different sizes and shapes ensure a customized fit and feel while also maximizing stability on the ear.
"With Jawbone, we set out to transform a technology product into a personal accessory," said Yves Béhar, who joined Aliph as vice president and creative director while continuing to lead fuseproject, the San Francisco-based design studio he founded. "Jawbone's ergonomic and clean design enhances all aspects of the product experience: visual, tactile and auditory."
The Jawbone Bluetooth headset was awarded an International CES Innovations Design and Engineering Award and an iF Product Design Award. An earlier generation of the Jawbone headset was honored with the 2005 CES Innovations Award, the BusinessWeek Industrial Design Excellence Award, and a DEMOgod(tm) award from the DEMO industry conference group in 2004. The first version of Jawbone has also been exhibited at both the New York Museum of Modern Art and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art.
Jawbone is currently available exclusively at select Cingular Wireless retail stores nationwide for $119.99 and is compatible with all Bluetooth-enabled handsets. Consumers can also visit www.jawbone.com.
About Aliph
Aliph was founded in 1999 by Alex Asseily and Hosain Rahman, two young engineering entrepreneurs who met as Stanford undergrads. The pair shared a belief that voice would be the dominant interface for mobile devices and that creating a noise-free environment was critical to delivering an improved mobile communications experience. Aliph is committed to ensuring that mobile users have the best possible experience anywhere, anytime. Since 2002, Aliph's technology has been optimized for DARPA to maximize communications clarity in the most hostile conditions. Aliph's first consumer product, the Jawbone headset, debuted in 2004 to critical acclaim for its marriage of performance, design and comfort. Headquartered in San Francisco, Calif., Aliph is funded by private investors and the Mayfield fund. For more information about Jawbone, please go to www.jawbone.com.

============================================================================================================================
Singapore, 21 December 2006—Ozura Mobile ("Ozura"), a global leading publisher and developer of mobile entertainment will reveal the total number of five games in the 1st quarter of 2007.
“As the mobile gaming industry gradually matures, so do the tastes of mobile gamers. While Snakes used to be a sufficient benchmark for mobile games in the past, gamers nowadays have more elaborate and demanding needs in terms of game play. More eye candy, more character or storyline development and simple yet challenging fun on the go is the name of the game in these new times,” commented H.E Mah, Ozura’s Vice President of Marketing.
“Game appreciation and standards grow and change accordingly with the gradual maturation of the industry. We have taken the initiative as the year end approaches, to change the style of our games to cater to this growing need for better games,” added Mah.
Titles scheduled for release in the first quarter of 2007 are:
R.A.T.S (Rodent Assault Tactical Squad) – The R.A.T.S are at it again! At 0800 hours, the tactical squad will assault the downtown café, codenamed ‘Café Ratoulette’. Many fellow rats have perished at the rolling pin of the evil Italian Chef, codenamed ‘Monsieur Killer ’. The mission is to go where no rat has gone before – the revered Kitchen of Heaven. Under the command of General Ratmandoo, the R.A.T.S will search, eat and DESTROY!
Lawak Kampus – Join Vanness, Froggy, Bepop, Aditas, Si Kosong and the Lawak Kampus gang! The Principal has called for yet another random Spot Check and Vanness has an elaborate plan to keep everyone out of trouble. With the help of a strategically placed trampoline, help him to relieve everyone of their ‘illegal’ items. Safe! Whether he intends to give them back is another story ;)
Antopia: The Beginning – For years, the colony of Ugo under the gentle command of Queen Isgaea has been home to the great ants of Laurasia. While the kingdom grew through both colonization and invasion, an alarming new threat began to take place-a dwindling supply of food.
Under orders from the Queen, scouts set out a dangerous mission to find a solution to this problem. A great many disappeared, traveling too far from home and getting lost. Those that returned gave news of a mysterious place overheard from other creatures in the realm.
Wonderful tales of never-ending food and healthy land for home digging were told. Rain showers and storms would never ever threaten the colony or wipe out citizens for the weather there was quiet and calm. This haven was called Antopia.
“Peng” the Guin - Sea level has begun to rise and the Guins now find the task of searching for a new home in their hands. Coupled with their determination to keep things ‘cool’ and their love for a good ‘Peng’, they set out from their beloved home to new and distant horizons.
Hello Kitty: Birthday Surprise - Hello Kitty and friends are throwing a birthday bash! Who’s the lucky person? Why, Kitty and Mimi of course! With their love of baking, Kitty and her twin sister Mimi start a birthday surprise for all their family and friends! Their birthday will be a day to treat everyone they love! They will be inviting Mama, Papa, Grandma, Grandpa and many others so they’ll need a lot of ingredients to make many birthday cakes! With ingredients such as eggs, flour, cherry, milk, cheese and strawberry, the cakes are well on their way to being yummy! It’s up to you and Hello Kitty to create the perfect birthday surprise!

Yung Joc Wraps His Incredible 2006 With Grammy Nod and Scream Tour; ATL-Based Rapper Goes From Unknown MC to #1 Superstar in One Amazing Year
December 20, 2006 -- Block Entertainment/Bad Boy South recording artist Yung Joc is set to put the cap on a year that saw him rise up from the streets of Atlanta to the platinum heights of hip-hop stardom.
Among the recent highlights is the news of Yung Joc's first-ever Grammy Awards nomination. The ATL-based rapper -- whose debut album, "NEW JOC CITY," premiered in the #1 spot on Billboard's Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums and Top Rap Albums charts this past spring -- got the nod for "Best Rap Song," honoring his #1 smash, "It's Goin' Down." The 49th Annual Grammy Awards will be held on "Grammy Sunday," February 11th, at the Staples Center in Los Angeles.
"Joc's proven success is no surprise to me," said Block Enterprises CEO Russell "Block" Spencer. "My industry instincts recognized his talent. His passion and drive are what keep him hungry. Numbers don't lie, so with his undeniable talent and incredible work ethic, I'm sure the best is yet to come."
"We expect great things from Yung Joc in 2007," said Bad Boy Executive VP and General Manager Harve Pierre. "For his first album, 'NEW JOC CITY,' he traveled through every crack and crevice of the United States meeting fans and shaking hands. He is a hard worker and the type of artist we love. He lived on top of the charts with his first LP and is already on his third single, '1st Time.'"
Yung Joc will wrap up 2006 with an appearance on BET's annual 106 & Park New Year's Eve extravaganza, aptly titled 106 & Party (check local listings). The rap sensation is currently on the road with the "Scream Tour 5." Billed as the "Ruff & Ready, Young & Sexy" tour, the latest installment of the massively successful teen concert series sees the rapper sharing arena stages coast-to-coast with some of R&B and hip-hop's hottest new stars, including Omarion, Ne-Yo, Mario, and Pretty Ricky. Sponsored by BET, the Scream Tour 5 will criss-cross the country through December, culminating December 31st in a New Year's Eve spectacular at Washington, D.C.'s Verizon Center (see attached itinerary).
Last month, Yung Joc's breakthrough street anthem, "It's Goin' Down," was named "Hip-Hop Track of the Year" at the inaugural BET Hip-Hop Awards event. The single went from underground sensation to the top of Billboard's Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart, and then quickly burst onto the mainstream, reaching the top 3 on Billboard's Hot 100. The track's companion video just received top honors on MTV2, where it was named the #1 video on the channel's "Top 100 Sucker Free Videos of 2006." The clip also topped the playlist at BET (where Yung Joc was a "Rated Next" artist), and scored Big Ten rotation on MTV.
What's more, Yung Joc is Warner Music Group's top mobile artist of the year. The ringtone for "It's Goin' Down" was certified three times platinum by the RIAA, and "I Know You See It" has been certified platinum.
Yung Joc reigned over the online world, spending much of Summer 2006 as MySpace's #1 artist. On July 24th, the MC celebrated with a sold-out MySpace Secret Show in his native Atlanta. Other high-profile live appearances included a hugely popular tour alongside Grand Hustle/Atlantic recording artist T.I., and a performance of "It's Goin' Down" during the main event ring walk at Don King's Gateway to Glory boxing event in St. Louis.
As if all that weren't enough, Yung Joc performed alongside Diddy at this year's BET Awards in June and also made guest appearances on some of the year's biggest tracks, including Danity Kane's top 10 smash, "Show Stopper," and Lil' Boosie's current top 20 hip-hop hit, "Zoom."

Cingular today said its 3G mobile broadband network now extends from San Francisco to New York, and from Chicago to Dallas, making advanced wireless services available in more than 160 markets, including most of the top 100 major cities in the country.
The company's 3G network offers advanced wireless services, such as viewing video clips, and enhances existing wireless services by making them run faster. Customers can now download a game or ringtone, or access e-mail, in a fraction of the time it used to take. Additionally, Cingular customers using a 3G handset can access all the company's data services whenever they're connected to the Cingular network.
"We're delivering on a commitment we made to our customers to enhance our core network and extend our 3G services nationally," said Ed Reynolds, president of Network Services for Cingular. "We will continue investing in and building out our 3G network so that customers across the country can experience all the benefits that wireless communications can deliver."
Cingular customers can now use its 3G mobile broadband network to rapidly access e-mail, browse the Internet, connect to business applications, or watch video clips while on-the-go whether standing under the Space Needle in Seattle or partying along Miami's South Beach.
Cingular's 3G network provides average download data speeds between 400- 700 kilobits per second with bursts to over one megabit. HSDPA/UMTS technology makes it possible for people to enjoy a wide variety of wireless content and gives Cingular the advantage of offering simultaneous voice and data services to customers based upon the global standard for wireless communications - GSM. For businesses and consumers, this means more feature- rich services and content, and for Cingular, a more economical method for carrying traffic and more efficient use of spectrum.
HSDPA is the high-speed evolution of GSM/EDGE (Global System for Mobile Communication), which shares a common core network and therefore is backward compatible with EDGE/GPRS.
In areas where the 3G network is not available, customers will automatically receive service on the company's EDGE network. The Cingular EDGE network is available to more than 270 million people in 13,000 cities and towns and in areas along 40,000 miles of highways, providing average data speeds up to 135Kbps. GSM is the world's most popular wireless technology, which is used by international wireless carriers to serve more than two billion people worldwide and enabling Cingular customers to make/receive voice calls in nearly 200 countries and access data services in more than 115 countries. With select 3G devices, customers traveling internationally can receive mobile broadband connections in more than two dozen countries.
Consumers can use Cingular Video to watch video highlights from media outlets including ABC TV, Cartoon Network, Adult Swim, CMT, CNN, Comedy Central, Disney Channel, Disney Mobile Studios, ESPN, FOX Sports, FOX News, FOX TV, FUEL, HBO Family (premium), HBO Mobile (premium), iFilm, Jayski Alerts, MTV, Music Choice, NASCAR.com To Go (premium), NCAA Championship Sports Content, NBC, Nickelodeon, Richard Childress Racing, SPEED, Spike, The Weather Channel, TV Guide Channel and VH1. They can also view highlights of a number of HBO's series including "Curb Your Enthusiasm," "Entourage" or "The Wire."
Business customers can use Cingular's LaptopConnect solutions to access the Internet or e-mail, download large files and attachments, or run corporate business applications. Cingular LaptopConnect combines either an external LaptopConnect card or an integrated modem within a Laptop and Cingular's Communication Manager to provide access to the 3G network. The service also offers additional security features compared to alternative wireless technologies.
